Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Question for those who do their own butchering. Do you do anything with the feet? When I had mine done the butcher asked me if I wanted the inner parts and the feet. I couldn't imagine what I would do with the feet so I passed on them.

Then today I saw roasted chicken and turkey feet for dog treats at FF.

Do any of you make these for your dogs? How do you make them? I'm thinking that it wouldn't be the best treat for my chicken-chasing dog. Any opinions?

Thanks all for the tips on who had pullets for sale.

In the end we were able to locate light brahmas that we were in search of....and just got back from the road trip.

Back to the grind.

Best of luck on the predators, and may the winds lay dormant & the sun be dimmed by rain clouds for your daughter.
We're looking for Brahmas pullets also, do you know if any are left at your source? In the spring I took in an injured Brahma that was a few weeks old. "Baby" followed me everywhere and we assumed it was a hen but the last couple of weeks has proven different. I'm unwilling to cull him, he's affectionate, handsome, huge...and one too many rooster. I'm able to set up a separate egg flock with him once my meats have been processed and we have been taken in by this breed so want to expand with Brahmas. So, any information you can pass along would be greatly appreciated!

Z, as the father of four daughters I can easily understand your concerns for your daughter. Many here share your concern with you. Thank you for raising a child who has become what she has done with her life.

We too are in the midst of the canning season. I've lost count on the pickles, 70ish by now. Apples....we have a great source for free apples and took advantage of it. We have apple sauce, apple jam, apple-grape jam, apple-cinnamon sauce, and apple pie filling. The deer and chickens are also enjoying the leftovers. The peas have been bagged for a month now, peppers are offering themselves daily and the tomatoes are a few days away from the jars. We had good luck in procuring a few hundred jars....for free. My wife's best friend's parents no longer can and so gave us their many jars. We of course will keep "The Farm" supplied in fresh canned goods. These are the same people who gave me my starter flock a few years ago. I moved here from the Philly area 3 years ago and one of my goals was raising chickens. This spring we tried our hand at incubating our eggs and some from The Farm. Today they have a flock of 7 Guineas we raised and a few easter eggers from their eggs. This is a good life.

Light rain here...baked fish and fries tonight....that's ok, it's been a while since we had them.

Once again, thanks for the kind words about my daughter Angie...she is leaving Chicago toward California as I type this....she was amazed at all the people there....

Picked some green beans for a fresh meal tomorrow...plenty in the freezer.

Have Fun....bigz

Small world - my dad is from PA also. My great grandad was a railroad engineer and an inventor who invented brake systems for trains and did some horticultural experiments. (He had some apple trees that bore 5 different kinds of apples from the earliest to the latest. Only three of those trees remained when I was a child.)

I am sorry, we can not help out with the Brahmas. We have such a huge waiting list this year. People will definitely be waiting awhile. Kildare, you are still on it. But with your new ones, lmk if that changes. And if yours are sq, I'd be interested in your source ;)
BigZ, hope you get the bugger. And Cind, keep sending the dog out!
We've been pretty lucky here. Not too many losses to the hawks. I haven't been letting the white chicks out until they are much older. Because the Hawks always seem to pick them out.

Our 8 chicks arrived yesterday - these are the first time we've had chickens so we are quite excited. The look on my 4.5yo daughter's face when she saw them was pure joy, it was great to see. She picked one out right away and named it 'chicky chick' (she's obviously not too creative w/naming things). My 1yo son looked at them, waved, and then continued strolling about the garage looking for trouble to get into. :)

All the chicks seem to be doing great. There was one that was worrying me a bit early on but maybe she was just tired from the travel. They're all eating and drinking and pooping and running around now. Very fun to watch.

We had paper towels down over pine shavings for the first day, and I removed the towels this am (except under their water & food, helps keep things a little tidier it seems?).

Impressed with how much they are eating! Granted a bunch ends up on the ground, but still they went through way more than I thought they would in the first day.

Anyway, very much looking forward to the journey ahead! Here's a pic of one of them:

Thanks Cuties. Keep me on that list! I liked his LB. Hens matched our hen from you. And after viewing LB's at some fairs....your hen is def. sq.
If these are as broody as your hen...I'll need 10 of them just to get a couple of eggs/day!
