Thanks all for the tips on who had pullets for sale.
In the end we were able to locate light brahmas that we were in search of....and just got back from the road trip.
Back to the grind.
Best of luck on the predators, and may the winds lay dormant
We're looking for Brahmas pullets also, do you know if any are left at your source? In the spring I took in an injured Brahma that was a few weeks old. "Baby" followed me everywhere and we assumed it was a hen but the last couple of weeks has proven different. I'm unwilling to cull him, he's affectionate, handsome, huge...and one too many rooster. I'm able to set up a separate egg flock with him once my meats have been processed and we have been taken in by this breed so want to expand with Brahmas. So, any information you can pass along would be greatly appreciated!
Z, as the father of four daughters I can easily understand your concerns for your daughter. Many here share your concern with you. Thank you for raising a child who has become what she has done with her life.
We too are in the midst of the canning season. I've lost count on the pickles, 70ish by now. Apples....we have a great source for free apples and took advantage of it. We have apple sauce, apple jam, apple-grape jam, apple-cinnamon sauce, and apple pie filling. The deer and chickens are also enjoying the leftovers. The peas have been bagged for a month now, peppers are offering themselves daily and the tomatoes are a few days away from the jars. We had good luck in procuring a few hundred jars....for free. My wife's best friend's parents no longer can and so gave us their many jars. We of course will keep "The Farm" supplied in fresh canned goods. These are the same people who gave me my starter flock a few years ago. I moved here from the Philly area 3 years ago and one of my goals was raising chickens. This spring we tried our hand at incubating our eggs and some from The Farm. Today they have a flock of 7 Guineas we raised and a few easter eggers from their eggs. This is a good life.
