Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Well good....I would hold the price as firm...no discounts at all.

2015 American Poultry Association yearbook arrived today....one of their finest and worth joining, just to receive these great reads.

I had Tyler to help me the last 2 days after school but today he's back to work until Sunday so I'm all on my own again. We did really good yesterday and got the stairwell done before running up to Hayward to meet up with my mom. She had some of Tylers pants she patched and he needed them. Also got another jar of pickled veggies for the fridge. She's been sending them down to us for the past few months and can't keep them in stock, so nummy. When we got back decided to get the window/door framed in finally for the dormer.

House warming gifts I got me at Walmart.

Picked up this pull down spice rack at Ventures for .75, very neat. Tyler thinks I should use it for my Keurig cups instead.

Also while taking a break I get to sit at kitchen table and watch my birds. My whole goal to begin with when building this house. Mind you it's a mess out there, everyones molting and with being so busy I've turned out all my breeding pens so all the birds are running together.

I have been staying off BYC for awhile, cause I thought I was asking too many stupid questions. Or maybe, it was to just think up more. So I got a few chickens from the lady down the road in Sept. A couple of them are molting. I am getting concerned because cold weather is coming upon us and they have not regrown feathers. I have one that has a bare butt, another had a big bare spot on her back and under her wings. I keep thinking I should put heat in the coop, but, that could be because I am old and cold already. What is the best lamp for heat and light or just heat, my chickens have almost quit laying except for Dinner (original one) and my Reds that are laying the tiniest eggs, they started laying about two weeks ago. Can someone share about the heat/light think in the winter time?

They seem to grow new feathers in rather quickly so I wouldn't worry too much about that. I got a heat lamp for just the bitterly cold days like we've had for the past two winters, otherwise they handle the cold very well. My coop is not insulated at all and has good air flow.

your ears must have been ringing, I was just thinking about you yesterday,,
don't stay away because of asking questions.. how else are you going to find out ?

I personally do not like heat lamps.. I think they are dangerous and expensive.. and except for a few exceptions, they do not last long.

I go to Fleet Farm or Menard's and buy the tiny ceramic heaters.. I believe they are less than $20.oo.. I have not had to buy any for a few years,.. so the price might be a llittle more.
I plug the heater into a thermal cube.. that way it comes on only if it gets below 35F..
anyhow, these heaters have a fan and they do a pretty good job..

you do not need a high wattage bulb for light.. I am thinking of getting one of those new kind,
I can't think of the correct name right now.. they cost a bit more, but they are not supposed to burn out and they take way less electricity.
I have six of them in my shop. and a few throughout the house..
stay away from those curly ones.. they do not last long in the cold ...

Thanks, I was concerned because I have read so much about the combs and wattles freezing. Big Red, RIR, has a really large comb and big wattles, would hate to see them fall off or whatever they do. So how long do you leave the heat on and what kind do you have, My son was saying they have an infrared heater now for chickens. He will check that out this weekend.

You guys are great. Thanks for the info. I am so proud of my chickens....The chicken lady down the road will be bringing over 5 more birds. Wellingtons and black Cochins? Heard of both of them but not sure what they look like. So I will have quite a range of different breeds. That will bring my batch to 19. DS will finish winterizing the coop this week end and we will get one of those heaters, a thermal cube(we will have to ask at FF what that is)..Hey, ya know FF is being sold, right? And DS said a LED light is what you are thinking of Jim, is that right?
