Very nice brooder, Jim!
I have two wooden boxes with lids. A big one for chicks and a smaller one for quail. The large one is a hand made that I picked up at a rummage sale and the smaller is an old hand made toy box I picked up for free. Both boxes have hinged lids that have been cut in two. One side for the light fixture and one side for access. I prop the lids open a bit as necessary to control the temp and vent.
I only have 8 chicks in the big box right now, which gives me room to keep some jugs of water nice and warm when it's super cold. I have a couple of buns who consistently dump their water so I give them bottle waterers - I use the small box to thaw these when I switch them out. Can't waste any of that energy!
Good luck with yours, @kristip - please share what you end up making!
