Got some work done in my garden last night... I put most of my tomatoes in pots this year and they are doing ok. Green beans look good... peppers always seem to have a tough time. Usually do good with cucs and brocolli but both are lagging this year. Broccolli looks munched on. not sure what is getting in there. Just not much growth from the cucs. Wish they would do something...I love to make pickles.

We have gotten 2 inches of rain over the last 2 nights. Garden looks great. My cukes are a little slow this year, but they are coming. I did not use bagged fertilizer this year, only what came out of the coop and run and it is working great. Kristip, did you use lime on your garden? We are planning on buttered beets again tonight and I am going to take some radishes, beans, peas and dill to a friend of mine. Luckily our garden dries out from heavy rain quickly so I will probably be tilling again tomorrow. Going to top off the onion bed with a fresh layer of dirt and chicken poo after planting the sets back for next year. Mushrooms are still producing well which is a bit of a surprise. They usually take a break by now. Sorry, I get started talking garden and I don't know how to shut up.

I am all caught up again...well, here anyway! Just waiting for the rain to stop and heading out to pick raspberries. Neighbor posted a pick of hers and reminded me to go and check. YUP--ready!
The garden is looking good here too. I have been trying to stay on top of the weeds. Early work is paying off. Maybe picking beans soon!

I floated the buckeye eggs and saw movement in two. Most were clears--unfortunately. I returned 6 or 8 to the bator to finish up...hopefully I will get some cuties out of them! I miscalculated the dates because I have been doing quail...hopefully sometime this weekend.

Gotta run...I guess a friend is coming out...day is filling fast! have a good one! TerriO

Daethen...no lime...does that help? I put the chicken droppings on in the winter in the garden and till it in for the spring. So many big projects I want to do but with kids activities, vacations and me being sick ( this week) getting frustrated!
When my kids were little, they napped alot and I had time to get out and garden and made some huge flower/veggie beds. Now that they are almost 10... schedules are super busy and my work is keeping me busy so not as much free time...and weeds are bonkers. I never fabricked my beds but feel I need to rip it all out, fabric and just put plants in specific holes to limit weeds. Lots of work but will be so much easier in the long run. Dont have the $$ to pay someone to help so will be a long haul...hubby does not like gardening...mowing is his job so not sure how much help he will be...maybe I can bribe the kids to help mom...little each day!

Good day all!

TerriO- Cookie was a handful. She not only had extreme food aggression (none that I saw towards human, but serious attacks towards animals. We had several fights between her and Theo and even attacks related to our small dog when food wasn't around), but she also has several anxiety based issues. It seems that she had been hit or repeatedly threatened to be hit and was very sensitive initially with arm movements. She also destroyed the fence gate (plowed right through it), siding (tore it off of the house), door frame (scratched from the outside toward the inside-removing the framing), and would jump over the fence come dark. I am not sure what her previous owner did, but I am sure that Cookie lived inside come dusk/ dark. She would never run away once jumping the fence, she just tried to get in another door. I had thought we were having a break through as I started to feed her separately and she was staying in the yard during the day, but the damage that she was doing to the house at night was too much. I am hoping that her issues can be better managed where she is now (I also hope that they have metal siding, fences, gates, etc.).

Our problem now is that she shared her "talents" with Theo and he is copying her bad habit of scratching to get in and breaking through the fence! Luckily, he is much better behaved, has a better personality, listens to commands, and understands who is boss...none of which Cookie did. It will take some time to break him of these newly learned habits (wish us luck) and to fix the damage done!

Brent- the remaining 11 eggs either stopped growing or were duds. We had 3 hens trying to sit on the eggs, so I'm sure the viable ones just didn't get enough heat time in. The one we have is growing strong and has 2 moms!

Lime is what activates fertilizer. I have a 30x45 garden and I put at least 3 bags of pelleted lime on every spring with the fertilizer and till it all in. My garden is crazy healthy. At least try it next year. I also make my rows far enough apart that I can till between to deal with most of the weeds and then the soil is loose enough that the weeds in the rows pull out very easily. I also mow the yard. All things outside are my territory!

I found out what was ailing my lawn mower steering,
a frayed and almost broken cable.
It jumped out of the groove of the pulley.

I ordered a new one . there are 2 on the machine, but I am not going to replace one if it is not broken @ $19.45 each..

It is raining off and on here. good for the garden and lawn. I mowed a little until the cable disconnected itself again.

I had a funny thing happen this morning. there is a guy who I have coffee with at the restaurant . he does pest control. termites, ants etc.. I was going to ask him what to do about potato bugs.. before I sat down, he asks me.. what do you do about potato bugs ? LOL .. neither of us wants to do the poison route.

I use it around the house foundation and around my corn in the garden. It's perfectly safe if you get the organic food safe kind. I get it at the Antigo country store for 3.50 a 5 pound bag. A lot of grain products including grocery grain products actually have some in it. It protects against bugs and clumping I guess. I put it around the house last wwek because it's the only bug killer that's chicken safe and pet safe. I know a lot of people who put it in gardens and around plants for earwigs and ants around here. Menards does carry it but idk if it's the food grade and it's rather expensive that way. The country store buys it in bulk and packages it in brown paper bags and that saves a pile of money
