Morning all, chilly here.

I have a Springfield 9mm for my cc but I think my .38 is a much better gun for that. Hubby's Christmas gift to me a couple years ago along with pink tipped ammo. Calls it my "insult on injury" set-up. Guess he feels that getting shot with a pink bullet would be worse than a standard one in a home invasion situation.

Getting one small egg almost every day, however had a larger one a couple days ago that turned out to be a double yolk. Weird that a pullet double yolker is still smaller than a standard large egg. Put the feeders up on a couple 2x4 but they are still getting their feet in it because there is feed all over the ground. May have to raise it up a couple more inches. Already starting to window shop for chicks/eggs for next spring, found a place up by Iron Mountain that has Marans and olive eggers.

Beets and corn took off while we were gone on vacation, had to do some weeding yesterday and the lawn is a jungle once again. Oldest off for the next two weeks, seasonal job done and doesn't leave for college until the 4th so may "encourage" him to get on the mower today after the dew dries.

Beans starting to flower, need some Jim?

GG, Nobody has picked any of my beans since you did.
Annie picks some for our meals here and there, and that is it.
I don't ever want to hear that there are people starving in the wausau area..

today I am having computer issues.. I shut it off and came back on and now it seems to be better.

today I am going to measure my house for new soffit and facia.
Nephew Jake said he would do it in Sept.. (4 years ago) like I said, I am patient.
If he doesn't show this year, I will do it myself .

I ordered a coil for the chainsaw. and then I found a different place where I can get one quicker, so I ordered another one.

then just for Shi ts and giggles, I put the old spark plug back into the saw and it started.. only ran for a couple of minutes and then quit.. the coil must quit when it warms up.

.If the weeds are not too wet, I am going to cut some more brush out of the pines.. Nobody showed up to help with that project either

afraid to even look at the lawns. I am sure they are turning into hay fields again...

I have eggs due to hatch by Wednesday this week.
I stopped the turner yesterday.

I was wrong. and i am man enough to admit it.
I took the carburator off of the saw and made sure it was all cleaned inside and out. put it all back together and the saw runs better than new. now I just have to do some fine adjusting of the idle and tomorrow I am going to cut a big tree down...

good cool dewey morning, good luck with your big tree. I love cutting wood. Probably only because I don't rely on it for heat. Definitely not as cool this morning as yesterday. Got home at 2 am took a nap and now I'm off to the meat market to take care of some beef and pigs, come home take a quick nap and back to work for 6 this evening. I'm sure I'll have no trouble sleeping when I get home at 2 am again. It's amazing how a few hours difference throws a guy off.

I might not be cutting that pine tree down today.
Annie is going in to get a MRI to see if her heart is healed enough so she won't need a pacemaker. She really really does not want one.. she makes sure everybody else goes to the Dr, but when it is her turn she resists like he-ll ..

We did it!

Thanks so much for the advice. I think we just needed a little encouragement. It was not nearly as bad, bloody or stinky as we imagined it would be. In fact I think I would rather cut up chickens than fish! Gosh, I don't know why we were so apprehensive about it, probably because it was our first time. The first one was the hardest but we got the hang of it after that.
The plucking took the longest but that wasn't even really difficult...maybe because they were still young?? We only did 4 of them, don't laugh, we're new!

I was very surprised my husband helped as much as he did. He usually wants nothing to do with the chickens. Those roosters must've really been bothering him! Only an hour later we were sitting here commenting on how much quieter it is. My neighbor met me by the mailbox yesterday and said thanks. She too noticed immediately. I feel bad, I didn't realize they were bothering her even though she said they weren't, now I know they were.

So I have only one rooster left and I hope he doesn't get too noisy. I would like to keep him because we only have 2 hens and I really want a few more. Which leads to my next questions (I have a million but I'll save some) So my hens haven't started laying yet but I think in the next few weeks they will.

Can I let them hatch out some of the first eggs or should I wait? How do I know if they're fertile? I bought these chickens from a lady in the area and I assume they're all closely related so do I need to worry about inbreeding?

good for you.

you don't have to worry about inbreeding too much.
If you were breeding for show, then it is a different situation.
but you are not doing that, yet. by the time you will be, you will know more about it anyway..

inbreeding brings into account certain traits of each parent.
If the traits are good, then that is fine. but if the trait is bad, you don't want to encourage it..

I never show, therefore I don't know much about breeding..

ask UnkaDan about this .. He is a wealth of information.

For the life of me, I don't understand how a few crowing roosters can be considered noisy .
I personally like the bird noises..
sometime in the future, if you want to hear something relaxing.
go into the chicken coop on a warm evening just as they are roosting for the night. listen to them hum and murmer.

Congratulations!!! We're due to start a few here probably in a couple days. We're having trouble finding a killing cone. What method did you use? Did you have any help from someone with experience?

These will be our first and I admit I'm a bit nervous but also excited.

Any advice? How old were your cockerals that you did?

I absolutely love the hum and murmur! It truly is very relaxing they need to add it to a sound machine lol. DH2B doesn't always notice it and last night probably half the flock was doing it(30-40 birds is about half). He just looked at me and whispered what the heck is that?! Lol I just laughed and said remember that is their soothing noises like let's sleep here. Lol it was quite incredible and loud almost with so many doing it.

If your eggs are fertile they'll have a little white bullseye in the yolk when you crack them. Given you only have a few hens and one rooster I assume your fertility rate will be pretty high.
