Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Strawberries are a favorite around here, never set up a regular patch though, may have to consider that in the future. New to us hens gave 4 eggs yesterday, good way to start their career here. I waited until my "old" girls roosted for the night, shut the pop door and put the new ones in the run for the night. Just moved them back into the tractor this morning with my trusty pokey stick for encouragement and let my other ones out. Not worrying about disease quarantine, just giving them some time to see each other before I combine them. I think today I will let my olds free range and my new ones just watch. Hoping that when the whole flock goes together that the seasoned ones will train the new ones to come when called.
Wish we had a bator so the kids could watch a hatch. Sister Leah would do that when she was still teaching.

GG, it's nice when things go as planned.
I never seemed to get good results on purchased hens.

I took an incubator to a school where my niece was principle. principal . choose one.
I think the teachers got more of a kick out of it than the kids did.

after selling those chickens, we are waiting to see how many of the remaining ones will lay.
I don't expect much from the black productions. they never impressed me much .
they are all purchased from two different people.
I am ready to let them go as soup chickens.

we started a few strawberry patches over the years.
they never amounted to much, the weeds always took them over.

I might try a 5 gallon bucket planter for them .
I can get about 20 plants into a bucket.
If I set up two or three buckets, that should give us a few berries.

Mike's berries is just a half mile up the road from us. Annie goes there 2 or 3 times for short cake berries.

DD Barby is planting a ton of tomato seeds.
I requested Roma's, . she bought 3 packets of them.
I expect she is going to give me a whole flat of starts.
72 plants. I have the room in the garden. If they all grow well, I might have to set up a roadside stand and sell some.

I think I have settled on a plan for the disc hiller.
I won't have to modify the cultivator after all.

If things work out as I am planning, I will submit pictures.
I might even go into production. small scale..

for you newer people, check it out.
It is held near Tigerton.
the weekend after Memorial weekend.
I think this will be the 7th year.
bring the whole family. it is a fun 3 day affair.
make it one of your vacation get aways for this summer.
Pot luck on Saturday,
You can show up on Friday and stay until Sunday.
OR show up at any time .
White elephant sale.
Raffles.
all night firepit conversation.
bring your beverages of choice.
tent camping, trailer hook ups, and two bunk houses.
a nice lodge with plenty of seating,
a fully equiped kitchen.
cost is minimal, and if the raffle goes well, most, if not all, of the cost is covered.
so all you are out is the cost of a tank of gas to get there.

Kids balk at the first time coming,
but we have had many repeat visits from those same kids.

Put them all together in the run of my coop at 5:17
Separated them all at 5:19
Did not go well....

anyone have a idea how much the large straw bales cost about? I'm doing a straw bale garden this year and I know I can get small squares for 3 bucks each but maybe the 3x4x8 large bales would be better.
