Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

good morning before the monsoons begin again.
I have to mow my grass !! not all of it, but the section where the old garden used to be is going nuts..

I have to drag the garden smooth again after making those trial runs with the hiller..
I should do it today before the rains come.

5 chicks in the bator bottom. they picked up a batch yesterday.

Is the bash on June 2, 3, and 4 ?

......jiminwisc.....
ETA:
I got the whole garden dragged and smoothed out.
moved the compost heap from the corner of the garden to the grass.

only 2 eggs today. my fault, I let the waterer go dry.

still it was nice to be out in the sunlight.

not any big plans for the rest of the day.

maybe go buy a 1 1/2" drill bit to make holes in the plastic pail for the strawberry plants.

Got our little storage shed mostly cleaned out. We are going to tear it down and build something much bigger. My young EE hens got transferred to the big coop but still in their kennel so that they can get used to the existing hens. Now I am working on cupcakes for my son to take to school tomorrow.

newbies and oldies, take note.
when we tell you to build your coop larger than you think you need to.
this could (will) be you after chicken math takes over.

I dragged the whole garden and smoothed it out today. It will lay fallow for the next two weeks.
I also moved the compost pile off of the garden and put it on the grass next to the garden.

my sweet potatoes are sprouting like crazy.

my lawn needs mowing. I won't get to it before this next rainy spell, so it will be a hay field by the time I get to mow it.

got up to 75F here today, really nice to have the doors and windows open to air out the winter stale air ..

stopped and got a soft serve sundae today. it's been years since I did that. found out they no longer have marshmallow topping. settled for butterscotch and creme de mint .
I could easily go there and order just a cup full of toppings and skip the soft serve altogether.

6 chicks waiting for a ride home. it looks like the hatch is over. about 33% hatched. not good, but OK for this early of a hatch..

........jiminwisc......

update on the hatch,
34 yesterday, 7 today

41% hatched..

good day one of the monsoon,

can't work outside, so maybe I will get the feeder built.

maybe I will get the strawberry bucket made, too.

I either have to find my forsner drill bit set, or go buy a specisl
bit for these two projects.

Gretchen, did you lose any trees from the storm ?

Sonja and Gretchen, do you want any strawberry plants ?
they are Everbearing. and they are FREE ..

I singled out Sonja and Gretchen because they are both located very close to me. anybody else is welcome to some

still only 7 chicks in the bator bottom. I am declaring this hatch officially over..
41 out of 98 .. not a real good average.
but , at $2.5o to $3.oo per chick, not a bad result.

Morning all! No rain here, yet. I was hoping for some as the dirt from the trench project needs compaction, we need to see if our grade repair along the foundation will actually work at preventing rain water from seeping into the basement, and to water all of the plants & seeds. However, we are planning to stain another section of fencing this weekend, so hopefully no rain is expected this weekend. We've got to get the staining done in sections and this section will allow me to build a new composter. All this said, it looks like we are expecting rain until Monday, so staining will most likely be delayed.

Did the float test. The remaining speckled sussex were all duds. I contacted the seller to let her know that I had 1 of 14 hatch. The remaining welsummers I really couldn't tell. They were floating differently in the water (side up vs tip up), and seemed to have minor movement, but my eyes could've been tricking me. I put them back in the bator, adjusted humidity & temp, and I''l wait a bit. Of the welsummer eggs I've had 7 of 15 hatch, so close to 50% hatch rate which is normal for shipped eggs. The live 8 are still very quiet and content, growing quickly too! I cannot tell the sussex apart from the wellies.

Strawberry transplants are doing well and thriving in their new pot. Seedlings indoors are doing well, but are getting leggy.

A friend just brought over a vise, huge propane tank, and portable forced-air propane heater as he is moving and can't take them along. Score! He knows that Nathan is smithing and donated to the cause, so to speak!

Jim - I do believe the dates that you listed are correct for the bash. That is what I have written down as well.

bl4 & everyone planning to be at the bash Friday night. Are we having a wine & cheese/snacking on goodies night?

Have a great & productive day everyone!

Hoping to get the hubby to bring home the waterblaster so that I can get the kids pool and the outside of the house cleaned up. Figured it was something that I could do in the rain as well. Have to deliver the cupcakes to school soon. Have a great rainy day everyone!

Yep, I'm gonna be sure to bring a couple quarts of pickled asparagus ...one of the regular and one with the added red pepper. Maybe make a couple pizzas too Friday night. Did you see my posts about the truck rim cs? I'll bring it to the bash for inspection, if you are interested in it, or pay more for one in Black Creek. Mine is priced at $10.

Holy rain cow here today....

bigz

chicks all went home, the bator is turned off.

I have to dig out my concrete mixer to mix up a batch or two of potting medium for strawberries. a batch makes about 34 quarts.

will have to go pick up some moss. I have everything else that I need; except a sunny day.

......jiminwisc...

looks like Friday and Saturday will be rainless. maybe I can get the cement mixer dug out of the lean to.
then mix up the strawberry dirt....

Hi Jim! I would love some strawberries. I am traveling for work right now but will be home tomorrow. I have grand plans to build a garden tower out of a 55 gallon plastic barrel. Have you seen plans for them on YouTube? Not sure I can make them, but I'm willing to give it a try. Sorry about the font size as my iPhone won't let me enlarge it.
