Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Corey, I was going to give you a warning that it was on the way. from my chair in the living room I could see the lightning out the kitchen window for over a half hour.

I came down here to go on utube and look up mason bees. they are supposed to be super good pollinators.

I'm Back!!!! Wow, site looks nice, had to reset my password but that was easy enough. We have had torrential downpours, hail and wind. Oh the wind. I was out last night saving the babies from drowning as their nursery space flooded and the water had no where to go but up. There was much noise as I walked in, all the peeping. 15 minutes later they were safe and dry. I was covered in mud and sh!t but I wash, no big deal. Went out and recovered my plants too as the wind took the tunnels right off. Not sure how much rain we got, will have to read what Jim says.

good morning,
the official word on how much rain we got: too danm much at one time..

I didn't notice the wind here so much.
but we have a nice wind break all along the West side of our property.

our power went out from 2:3o until 4:25.

I don't think the eggs in the incubator were damaged.

of course, I didn't shut the overhead door. so my box of tools will need draining and drying..

I was about a hour behind you too Jim. Seems like the brunt of it always quits before antigo. I'm okay with that tho. Kicking around the idea of ordering some chicks from a hatchery. Everyone's sold out of blue laced red Wyandottes tho so I'd get everything but for this year.
Did you get hit hard by round 3 (or 4?) last night? We're in the northern part of the county and I thought we were going to have build an ark! No power loss but our internet was down til this morning.
Could you do me a favor please? Let us know if you happen to trip across someone that still have BLRW chicks available. Thank you in advance.

Good to hear you are all good, Jim. Ditto on the rain, sigh.

Welcome aboard! I can't be too far away from you I am in Grant county near Richland Center. I have a mixed flock of around 30.

I planted my seeds a week ago this past Monday. Everything is up. My radish broke through in about 3 days but even the beets and kohlrabi are up. Bought the plants today and will be putting them in tomorrow. My new babies are getting along great with the elders. Thanks for the advice on introducing them!
I lived in Muscoda as a kid! Fond memories of morel hunting:D
I'm about 2 hours away now, but yes, we're all cheese heads and wouldn't change it... although this wacky spring may shake my resolve on that:barnie
So glad to hear your bigs and littles are getting along well.
My radishes popped through in just a few days too. Looks like my tomatoes aren't gonna make it though, just have to go buy some this weekend and get them in...hoping to can 50 qts of tomato sauce this year.
So glad to have found this forum.... there's so much info...and other cheese heads, yay :wee

I just bought about 25-30 tomato plants yesterday. We can around 75-100 jars of spaghetti sauce every year plus juice, whole tomatoes and salsa. Going to try and get my plants in the ground today. When did you live in Muscoda? I've been here for most of my life.

Jim- if I could catch all of my mason bees, I'd give you a ton! They are everywhere at my house.

I hope that your eggs aren't impacted by the outage. I'm not sure whether or not my outage effected my previous hatch, but I did have a low hatch rate and 4 that died in the shell.

Otherwise, we have been fortunate to not have had too much rain. I had just set seeds, so I was praying for lighter rain so it didn't wash away everything. The wind, though, has been intense. Luckily, the tomatoes and seedlings are still doing well.
Chicks are growing quickly. Does anyone have a need for welsummer roos? I have at least 3-4.

Oh my goodness! I had no idea you could get that kind of yield from 25-30 tomato plants!!! We are planting 30-45 depending on what we can fit in the garden. This is my first year with a garden, first year canning and first year with chickens...go big or go home, right?!
When I was 7 (33-ish yrs ago ) we lived on hwy 60 across the street from the Wisconsin river. My beloved dog got hit by a car trying to get to the river for a swim...miss that ol' girl. We were only there for about 1-2 years, but I remember more of that time than any other part of my childhood.
Funny how that goes.
I'm looking forward to getting to know you and everyone else on here better.
BYC is awesome! :thumbsup

I got 3 BLRW from a breeder in Mazomanie, NPIP certified. They are taking orders currently, I can get you her info if you're close enough.
