What kind of grapes are you working on?

I threw some hops roots into the ground one year. The chickens thought the freshly dug dirt was a new dust bathing area for them. The hops never grew...

I'll be working on freezing sweet corn today.

these grapes are concord. I planted a double row many years ago. a piece of advice, plant just a single row. if you plant more than one row, keep them far apart so you can drive a full grown tractor between them..
the best way to propagate hops is with root cuttings. I think they are rhizomes .
my chickens thought my rhubarb patch was a good place to set up their dust bath.. they wiped out two well established plants..
this year my rhubarb wilted before I got even one pie .. :hit

it got hot out so I am taking a well deserved break.. Annie made a raspberry pie. that was my breakfast..Very healthy, almost all the food groups in it.
I got five more grapes air layered.
I will attempt some pictures in chronological order..

the first picture : the cub cadet sitting in front of the grapes. most of them are on the ground . you can see how tall the weeds are.

second pic: the tangled mass of grapes after the weeds are mowed and pulled.

third pic: my work station. those two silver bakes potato looking things are air layers wrapped in aluminum foil..

two of the air layers on the ground. I will stake the vines up temporarily ..

about the end of Sept I hope to cut the air layers free of the mother plant and transplant the root ball into pots..
Next spring I will put them into a permanent row..
no guarantee that any of them will grow.

Stopped by the farm market this morning and ordered 10 doz sweet corn for our annual corn roast at Camp Aug 2. I will grill 5 doz to start with and depending on the crowd, I'll keep grilling, or bring the rest home for freezing....I donate the corn, so I'll keep any we don't use.
I should go around and saw off all the extra black walnuts I have here...they become invasive with all the squirrels we have planting them. Then they get so big, they take over the area.

Hi, I am done air layering the grapes. I have ten of them done. tomorrow I will stake each vine..I would like to end up with 7 good roots .
then I will air layer a few branches of the two apple trees.. I want to get at least 4 good roots from them..
If I get time, I want to go beg some branches from my friend's pear tree..
maybe he will let me try some air layering.
