winter is settling in nicely , here..
for the next ten days the temps are going to stay below freezing. that should push the frost down being that there is no snow cover..
Kee, I hope that big ol' house is easy to heat for you..
did the chickens come with the place ??

the Pack lost again. their excuse ??

aren't the Packers a good team also ??
I think they have to improve the play calls.
maybe put somebody else on it instead of MMc....

Jim, I hope so too! We found out that two exterior doors need to be replaced, sooner rather than later. And yep, the chickens came with! Instant gratification It definitely is cold. A lot of bitter wind sweeping through. Even worse now that the combine came through and all of the crops around us have been harvested. I'm sad I have to protect the eggs now--it's been the perfect temp out on the enclosed porch to keep them before they go out for sale, but now I have to put them in a cooler, maybe.

kee, I read somewhere that every foot high of wind break will direct the wind up ten feet.
so if the farmer would leave a couple of rows of corn, that would raise the wind 50 to 60 feet.
I planted a double row of pine trees. they are about 40 to 50 feet tall. we get no drifting in our yard..
when I am plowing the driveway I cannot feel and wind until I get to the road where the treeline stops..
maybe put a jug of hot water in the cooler with the eggs, should keep them from freezing over night ??
or a light bulb..

We definitely want to plant some evergreens along the west and north sides. I thought something fast growing in the back then something larger and slower in the front of that would last longer. I'm really hoping to buy this place and that maybe someday at least one of the kids will want to take over.

all three of my kids have indicated that they do not want to live here. I guess when the time comes we will just sell it and have a good time at the casino..
we planted seedlings. actually we had 3 rows along the driveway, but one winter the town snow plow came in with the side wing down and mowed off the whole first row. they were about 16 inches tall. all neatly spaced along the top of the snow bank..
the last time the plow came into our yard, they made a swing, stopped the huge V plow right at our steps into the house and backed away. leaving a 8 foot high snow bank 3 feet from our door. it froze like that. we chopped through it with axes and shovels until we had a path wide enough to walk through..
that's when I got my own plow..
my advice to anyone, don't put off planting trees. do it now.. five to seven years might seem like a long time to wait for fruit, but it doesn't seem so long when you are looking back 40 or 50 years..
and don't plant any black walnut trees if you want any kind of other tree..

Good to hear everyone is busy and preparing for the long Winter ahead.
Welcome chickenlady and share where you are and what's taking up your time most days.
Busy here with the Camp's fundraiser at Church, tomorrow is the Broasted Chicken Dinner and days of prep are in order to pull off the annual event...in the morning we will be breading cases of cut up chicken.
Times two on planting the trees... mine are 45 years old and younger...I plant some every year and enjoy all of them dearly.
Still hunting too...man that wind was cold tonight.

Definitely! First thing this spring there will be a bunch of trees going in. I'm happy that are moving in now, to be honest, because we have the whole winter to plan how to set things up in the spring.

Any advice on where to buy some tree seedlings for next spring?
We want to do some planting in the old pastures ... We are thinking Oak, maple, pine, spruce. Some along the property line, the rest in clumps to form wildlife habitat.

Maybe a couple of Frasier firs to use as Christmas trees in a few years. I like rustic trees over the over-trimmed, way too dense farmed trees.
