Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I bought a few barred rock hens once.
one of them was picked on by some of the others. I sort of protected her when I was in the coop. after a few days , when I went into the coop, she would fly up onto my shoulder and ride until I finished chores..
I also had a Royal Palm turkey who would fly up onto my shoulder out in the yard.. One day I shook her off, and she never did it again..

Been loving this Winter weather so far, but will prolly be changing my mind by the end of the week. Tomorrow I 'll break open some fresh straw bales in the coops for the flocks. With the extreme weather that's coming, collecting eggs more often will avoid finding frozen ones with a crack on them. When that does happen, I thaw them and cook them for the hens....hate to chance the bacteria that could contaminate the egg for human consumption...just sayin.

Chill in the air here today. Is it Spring yet?
Yep, there are folks in your part of the State, however most folks self diagnose and deliver the needed meds themselves....one can ask for help on here (BYC) when something arises. Vet prices can be costly to the point of unaffordable in regards to chickens...good cheap avian vets are hard to come by almost everywhere. Keeping a good dry, draft free clean environment and providing good feed and constant fresh water will keep your flock healthy for the most part.

Very true! I don't plan on taking any chickens to a vet without consulting here first. There are some really smart people here! But I do sometimes see the advice to go to a vet after trying other things. So I thought I'd have a name in mind should that happen.
I'm not averse to the realities of life, mainly that it comes to an end for everything at some point in time. I'm old, I've have had many pets age and die, and get sick.
Lol, I guess what I'm saying is that I have my limits to animal craziness.

I’m in the SE corner. No chickens here yet, and no vet ideas either. I have used the one in Burlington but that was for my dog.......

It just depends on where you are in the SE corner of the state. Most vets in my area only deal with small animals, not farm animals.

Been loving the weather but waiting for reality to step in. Looks like a load arriving on Saturday......

Nice calm sunny day for a change, and the hens were sure happy to feel the sun on their backs today.... with all the eggs laid and the happy talk all about! Nice to know that the days are slowly getting longer...we will gain another 15 minutes by the end of the month...how nice is that?
Keep the fire going.
