Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Nice to see you stop by BBP. You are up 3 roo's on me that need to be butchered here. My boys are in a separate coop and that means more chores too.
Just finished freezing 10 quarts of ho-made kraut. It turned out really good again this time. Tomorrow it will be pork steak and kraut on the menu!

Chickens are a flock bird and need company to be happy. Even if they squabble, they prefer that to being alone. I'd find another bird or two to share the digs.
Hoping everyone had a Merry Christmas!

Thanks! Hope you had a good Christmas a well. Pixie and I hung out in the garage with the stereo on. I drank beer while she explored the area.

I do know she needs a friend or two but trying to find the breed and age/size I want is almost impossible. Don't get me wrong, I love Rhodes but I really don't want all Rhodes. I only have room for 1 more possibly 2. Right now Pixie is at least in the "Hut". That tiny little thing Farm and Fleet calls a chicken coop. There is no protection from the front for snow etc.

Now that I've been able to keep the fox away, I am overpopulated with chickens. I like to have 25-35 chickens and 10-15 ducks over winter. I have 59 chickens and 12 ducks. I need to stop letting these hens set. This time of year nobody wants chickens so I'll have to try to rehome them in the spring.

What breeds do you have? I need one for Pixie who turned 1 in early September. I just got new tires on the back of my car after one blew between Janesville and Elkhorn on 43. It couldn't wait one week when I had an appointment scheduled. Brakes are fair but not for mountain driving *LOL* What part of Western Wisconsin are you?

Forgt to mention it would have to be one that would be of "Pet" quality. I don't care abut the eggs

I hope you had a very merry Christmas as well. Pixie and I hung out in the garage with the stereo on. I drank beer while she explored the area.

I know I need to get her a friend. In all honesty this seems to be the wrong time of year to just "toss" a new one in. I always end up with a chicken in a bedroom or bathroom, healing it's wounds a couple of times. I liked the article on the see but don't touch method and think it may be on the right track but that doesn't work this time of year in Wisconsin. IF it is way too cold I also bring them in the house.

I miss home saur kraut. My ex-husband told me that we just needed to shred the lettuce and put them in canning quart size canning jars with canning salt on top (forgot how much) and let them sit. Well he let them sit too long. Use to get crock made kraut from the farmer's market but the "Pickle Lady" isn't there anymore. He did make excellent home made Kim Chee but we lost the recipe when we had a fire in 2000 and lost EVERYTHING including our perfected secret BBQ sauce.

Making Progress with Pixie! Padre called me before 8am because he was worried about getting the snow shoveled. I got up and shoveled my steps, and part of drive to garage, got feed for Pixie and then shoveled out the pen. I decided to try to turn her igloo because I saw a snow buildup. Guess What! She looked at it and walked away, then walked in and out and when I left the pen she walked in and did not come right back out. I have my fingers crossed
