Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

BL4 that conference sounds like fun...wish they had more of that thing in WI.
Back when we decided that retiring/homesteading went hand in hand we chose an '80' on a dead end road, hardwoods, fields, public hunting behind the property with a beautiful river...paradise! If I had to do it again I'd buy a farm. We have had to build ALL buildings and pens/fencing from scratch...a lot of time and money invested that could have been purchased up front. My homesteading tip of the day...buy the best farm you can find with as much land as you can afford...don't start from scratch.

So that leads me to chicken news here. I've been wanting a sustainable meat bird flock for years. Set my sights on White RC Dorkings and finally got some this summer. Because I don't have enough room for all I'd like to sell a pair. If anyone here is interested send me a PM. I'd like someone to get them who would be willing to trade hatching eggs next summer so we can have as much diversity in our flocks as possible as this breed/variety is pretty rare. We're in NE WI...Crivitz.

I am looking forward to the conference. A nice break from the day-to-day drudgery...... and a road trip exploring the country!

The in-laws have 113 acres and need help. We are headed back to do what we can. They are pushing 80 and with their health issues it just makes sense. The kids keep trying to help which adds to their stress load...... it would just make everyone’s lives easier. I can still keep my job and work remotely, and we can put into practice what we have learned. Almost all our family is there so holidays would be a lot easier on everyone...... and the hubs could take a break and get a job that just provides a little extra. He has worked hard enough, it is time he has the ‘easy’ job.

I can’t say I won’t miss it here.....I enjoy our little patch of ground, even with all its limitations.

Alright fellow Wisconsin-ites! I got a new coop today, small think bantam size, and want to get 3 chickens before the snow flies. Anyone have bantams? How do they do in the winter? Bantam breeds close to me for sale are: cochins, seabrights, saramas and mille fluer d'uccle. I would like a higher producing layer but wont be able to provide heat either. Thanks. Also if anyone has any for sale in the Menomonie area I would be interested.

I would talk to the breeder that you're going to buy from...they will be able to tell you how their birds are cared for in the winter. From that list I'd say the Cochins are the easiest keepers, well feathered, calm and pretty good layers.
Let us know what you decide!

Whoever thought it was a good idea to put tar paper down under linoleum...... I would love to get my mitts on them. We just spent roughly 8 hours removing tar paper from a 10x12 area...... just to put cheap flooring down in order to sell the house...... ugh

Hoping to get the house on the market soon..........

Well, some folks should start checking in before we send search parties……

anyway, the floor.

I have blown far too much $$$$$ but we’ll worth it to have the Salatin library at the ready......

I have tried to convince the organizers that they need to spread this conference out I to a regional event..... their attendance would go though the roof.............I hope they do. It would be a lot easier to attend.

Working on tomatoes today. I will pick all the one that have decent color and let them ripen on the table. This late in October, I will not rely on the good will of mother nature to keep the weather this nice for much longer. Can't believe it is October already!! Where did the summer go?

What a wonderful time..... so glad we went! Amazing to meet all the people you watch on YouTube.......

Back at home, doing a few more tweaks to the house...... setting up picture day with the realtor. This is so strange..... I am not accustomed to selling homes..... but I will be happy when we are settled and the hubs is happy.

BTW, the pups are HUGE! They are now chewing everything they can get their teeth on....... and I could not ask for better dogs. Love them both to bits!

BigZ, Jim: where are you?
