Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

You do not need a nesting box for each chicken. start with one box.
if they are doubling up or more, add another box. but often they
will all choose the same box anyhow. I had ten boxes and they used
only four. I had up to 40 layers.
make the nests high enough for your comfort. any chicken can jump up
three feet .
buff orpington roosters have very long stringy drumsticks.
when we raised meat birds, we raised cornish X hens/pullets.
stayed away from roosters. Hens fit into freezer bags much better.
silver laced wyandotts are very difficult to remove feathers.
for butchering, stay with single colored chickens. buffs,
white or black..
I started out with six buff orpington pullets. after a few years,
I had 200 assorted birds .. watch out for chicken math..
It spills over into other species, too.
I have a chicken plucker for sale.. fyi for the future.

Anyone here going to the Wisconsin International Poultry show in Portage?
It's on Friday, Sept 23 & 24th.
I'm planning on going on Sat. 24th just to look see and take notes on what I might want for my next batch of chickens or???
Thats to far for me to go. We were camping up by Portage the 16th through the 23rd there is a lot of scenery!
If i was closer i would go.

Hi all ~ Newbie chicken mom here. I'm in Western WI near the twin cities. We just moved here from a south metro suburb, but my husband is a "cheesehead since childhood" (raised in Ashland WI). I have 4 buff orp hens, a RIR, and a buff orp rooster (no eggs yet, so I guess they're technically pullets and cockerels LOL). Looking to soak up and learn all I can from you "veterans". I'm also interested in meat birds, especially if anyone has had especially good luck with something a little slower growing than cornish cross, while still providing tender/tasty meat.

While I recognize this is not specifically a Christian forum, sure is nice to see so many people with scripture verses in their signature line...Now, to learn how to do that.

Looking forward to chatting with my "fellow cheeseheads".
Welcome:welcome

We had some rain from the storm, not sure how much, high winds and hail. peasize to 2 inch mixed with rain. Town south of me not far, suppose 8 to 10 miles as crow flies had 3 inch hail, power out for few hours, trees down.
Glad it was fast moving, lot of leave damage on corn from hail. Still making ears hopefully no damage to ears, time will tell.
Lost first half acre sweet corn down road due to no rain. never any rain to push herbicide into ground. Once rain came over month later all the weeds and grass came with it. otherwise corn on property I irrigated best i could and looking okay except 3rd crop starting to tassel early, must be stressed. Not sure as to why. Planted about June 15th 20th or so, it was still a little dry yet, but was getting some rain.
I will have to do some soil samples this fall or spring.

for the first time ever, I have Japanese beetles.
they are eating my grape leaves. there are not a lot
of them,,,,yet. I will spray them with soapy water.
1 teaspoon/1 quart water. it is supposed to suffocate them.
that is what I sprayed the paper wasps with. they were gone
in one day.
we have been eating corn just about every day. it won't
be long before I will be ready for market..

Japanese beetles took our grapes for 3 years. Until we found soapy water worked. Now we never see any om the grapes!
