Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Afternoon!!! Here comes the rain and cold...BRRRRR!!!

This is my first winter with 7 ducks and 2 geese. How can I keep their pellets from getting all soggy and gross? They do not have food or water inside their hut/runs but they are outside in a fenced area all day. I have their rubber tubs with water and tubs with food just in the fenced yard.

I thought about getting a calf hutch to put the food in to keep it dry and put the water tubs outside the hutch. They seem to eat soggy gross food but clearly prefer dry pellets.

Thoughts? Or I am putting too much thought into this and they will survive on soggy mushy pellets just fine.

Thanks

ducks are the messiest eaters.
it helps to put their feed far away from their water.
make them walk several feet to the water from the feed
My main issue is when it rains and soon to snow. I do put their tubs away at night in garage to dry out. They do make a mess when they eat but when it rains it is bad. Come to think of it, their water gets nasty fast too with their food right next to the water.

I will move the bowls around, I am sure they will LOVE that. (not) :D

See post #4. Maybe it would work for food too?

I have been buying store eggs for a long time
what I notice is that they are runny. almost like they have water in them.'
I won't need the tractor for snow plowing. we talked to the neighbor. one of the boys will come and do it again this winter.
Not sure if it just me, but was in California last Feb. Had eggs there and they tasted different and not in a good way. Guess i am used to free range chicken eggs.
Got 3 eggs yesterday, the molt is over I think. Was getting between 0 and 1 egg a day. DO have couple younger should start laying. Have hen which hatched late those prolly start lay Feb March I imagine.
Told wife price increase in eggs to 3.50 in spring. If her girlfriend dosnt want to pay the price I will sell off some of the chikens.

That is still cheaper than store bought eggs TOR. Plus
they are superior eggs too. I paid $5.79 for egg-land's
best eggs today. Kwik Trip sells theirs for $3.99 per dozen, but they run everywhere when cracked into the pan. I'm used to orange yolks from my hens and not the pale-yellow store eggs.
It will be fun to see the first egg appear next springtime!
Good luck to the deer hunters Saturday. Sounds like the weather will be ok.

Stay safe ... bigz

are the eggland best eggs fresher ?
I have a tiny cast iron pan that I use for eggs.
they can run just only so far. but 2 eggs do cover the whole pan. about 5 inches diameter.
today I am going to go buy some beer yeast and a can of malt extract. I found a simple recipe for a 5 gallon batch., I was going to make a 3 gallon batch but couldn't find a decent recipe. there is no more work with the 5 gal batch except i have to wash 16 extra flip top beer bottles.
I hope the batch turns out good.

Good luck to all the deer hunters. It will be different for me opening morning, my 44 year old daughter wants to try deer hunting and I will have her sit with me her 1st time hunting.:D
I'm so proud of my son. He wouldn't mind me sharing this. He's in his early 40's and due to some stupid stunt he did when he was 18, he can't hunt with a gun. He's come out by us to practice his skills and became a crack shot with a bow. His good friend lets him hunt his land and told him to let the 6 and 8 pointers walk as there were bigger there.
