beckyschicks, isn't skunk the absolute worst? Our GSD got hit this summer; he walked in the house right after it happened before we knew. It wasn't the typical skunk smell, it was almost chemically, so we didnt' figure it out for a minute ot two. Then it came to me and OUT he went! No tomato juice available at 8pm, so I found this online:

1 Qt 3% hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda
1 tsp. liquid soap

Mix it all and scrub them up. It will be a little bit pastey. I had to do it twice, but it got almost all the smell out, except for his muzzle. Try not to get it in their eyes though (I did and Aries' eyes got bloodshot.) I think he was in too much shock at having been sprayed, then tied to a tree and bathed with cold water at night to notice the soap.

Good luck. 3 or 4 times?!?! That dog has a learning disability.

Never had to use it but this is the same as above except with 1 cup baking soda it might make a difference. Sorry for the stink Beck nothing worse in my book, well there's ... never mind. But on the up side that means their coming out of hibernation. Spring is upon us. That means hungry omnivores! Eyes and ears open! Protect your wimmins! Wait till you see the whites of their eyes. FIRE! We fired our guns and they kept a comin.......

The peroxide and the baking soda is the way to go with a skunk sprayed dog--way cheaper than tomato juice anyway! When we first moved out to the country our dog got sprayed...we used my HOME CANNED juice!!! I almost cried...then it didnt even work! I even had to get out of bed to wash her, DH was nearly puking from the smell. I guess it really doesnt bother me much. None of our dogs have ever been sprayed since then--knock on wood! I have not had a chance to try that recipe and I am GLAD!
Let the girls out to free range today...about 15 came out. My EEs are either really lazy or afraid of the snow! ALL of the production reds came out...they have been here longer so maybe they were used to going out the big door. the newer part of the flock (that I got is September) are not used to free ranging so maybe that was the problem. I had also spilled part of a big bag of oats in there--darn wet bags!--so I guess they were busy with that!
Picked up 45 bales of hay today...helped my friend load it. I kept 5 bales and the horses ate every stem! I guess I will be going and getting more of it! Well, the people ate at the FFA alumni card game so I guess I better go and make some dinner for myself! Talk to you all tomorrow! Terri O

We havent hosed either of them down yet. I heard the baking soda and peroxide works. I'll have to try that. I actually dont have any peroxide! I thought I had some on hand but I guess we have all used it up. I'll have to get some tomorrow. The dogs are banned to outside anyway. Thanks for all the advice. And your all right nothing is worse than that smell. I still wonder what gets into that dogs head when she gets sprayed. She is one of the smartest dogs I know but still manages to get sprayed. We don't have any living on the property but it's always the ones moving though the area. I like your positve spin Dr HaHa, great way to look at it. I can't wait till spring. I want to go riding and not be cold or go down to the barn in shoes and not boots. Also right now everything is wet and gross down there. I was looking at some of my girls today and they look really ratty. My silkie hen is molting right now and looks horrible and is in a mood to match. They all have muddy feet and feathers. as for broodies I move them all the time without problems, the secret to the move is to keep them in the dark for 12 to 24 hours, undisturbed, and confined. if she leaves the nest then she's not ready to be broodie, I ve got a silkie pullet that just went broodie in a wire floor pen so had no choice but to move her, I placed her in a tidy cat littler contianer with a cover, uncovered it 12 or so hours later and now shes on the floor of the back shed going in and out whenever she wants

Not to change the subject of skunks over to something else, but it reminded me of the time one of my dogs got tangled up with a porcupine....talk about a stupid dog....mine kept trying to beat up the porky with relentless attacks....unbelievable!

I was forced to take the dog to the vet for help. The vet had to put him under to be able to pull all the quills out....they were under his tounge, in the inside of the lips and the whole mouth, as well as on the outside. One doesn't put that many pins in a pin cushion. It was the worst case the vet ever saw. Just thought I'd share one of the many stories our dogs have provided us!

Wow bigzio! That sounds like it was horrible! Poor stupid dog.

So your telling me that they never do learn. Thanks BCC for the info and I will be going to the first 2. I'm looking forward to going. I remember my first horse tack swap and how overwhelming it was, tons of stuff and tons of people. Is that how these are?
Ok got a question- How often does everyone worm and what do you use? I read alot on here, but everyone is giving different opinions. I trust your guys more.

Also do I have to throw away the eggs too? We just dewormed the horses, goats, and dogs, and it made me start to think about the chickens. Thanks everyone.

Good morning everyone! I am so glad that it's sunny again! Much better outlook for me if I can have sun. I can tell it's getting to be spring...darn geese are honking all night and going across the hwy during the day! I have to find a way to keep them on our side. My county loves to give out tickets, and they are not cheap! The problem is that the snow thaws on the opposite bank and they want to go and search through the grass for tidbits. I guess the grass in the backyard isnt good enough! Darn birds...well, gotta get off to work--have a fabulous day all! Terri O
