Well my Gosh! Gone for a few days and I think I had 5 pages to read to catch up with everyone's goings on! First WELCOME to all the new faces! So nice to have you join us.
I was sorry to hear of the owl attack--had that happen here too and couldnt believe it when I had a Great Horned Owl in my live trap!!! So they do go after stuff on the ground...even if it is in a trap!
Glad every one else is doing OK--I am finally thawed out after out vacation. We had 31* and spent the day dodging rain, then snow, then ice pellets, then sleet. We gave up on the fire and got inside the trailer in our sleeping bags and spent the day reading and napping! We sleep in our horse trailer...sweep it out, put down some indoor/outdoor carpeting and set up our cots. Kinda chilly when it is lower that 45 or 50 degrees. THank Goodness DH suggested we bring a milkhouse heater with us and that we splurged for electricity this time! My Mom asked why we went...how can you forgo an 11 year tradition? Sunday was gorgeous for riding-- the stars Sunday night were nothing short of miraculous. I had forgotten how beautiful the night sky is in Northern WI!
I have to tell you all about this funny bird we watched cross the road. It was doing a little dance! Two steps then a double bounce on one leg, then a few more steps and another bounce!
I stopped the truck and we watched it for about 5 minutes. We were laughing so hard...found out it was an American Woodcock when we got home. Very cool! I only had one tick crawling in my hair...got to check the dogs yet...the horses were very good-no spills. Although we dont usually have them, sometimes stuff happens...like the woman that broke 3 ribs and her scapula! OUCH!
So everything is OK here at the farm. One of the Anconas had to come it this morning because the cold was getting to her so she joined the 5 little ones from FFA in the basement. I hope I caught her in time. The baby goat perished while I was gone as did my female pekin and my "wild man" roo. I found the "shell" of the pekin today while chasing the geese back. (out of the corn field!) Nothing left but a skeleton and wings and beak...not dismembered though. I imagine she was starting a nest. I found an egg with her membranes still around it that I put under another sitting duck...maybe? I have no idea about the little goat...he was fine on Friday. WIld Man drowned in the goat water tub.
I just cant seem to go anywhere without having casualties!
I think I am going to turn on the heat...it is COLD in here! Nice to be back though...Terri O
