Ahhh. It was right at dusk too I had just walked outside to bring them back inside. I went to Menards and picked up some 1/4 gauge hardwire cloth rolls and plan to work on it tommorow after this rain goes away.

Yep Bigz how are the javas?

Is it raining by everyone today?

in stead of wire, what I do is have the outline of the birds broken up, (lattice work/a short solid piece of wood) if the owl can't see an outline and identify its pray it will not attack, that stoped them cold, I have not had another owl attack since

Dr H Thanks for the good vibes coming my way...I'm just going with the flow, I think at this point that's the best strategy.

Yes, a rainy, drippy, windy and cold day here. I've been out in the coop getting the birds sorted out. I gave them their first treatment of wazine yesterday, I'm thinking that one of my hens has worms so I'm treating the entire flock, and I'll repeat in another three weeks or so. Better safe than sorry. Jerry Lee and Elvis are pouting pretty good now...and everytime I open their cage they rush the door, looking to do a prison break. Well, there's a sheriff in these here parts, boys, so in you go!

I still don't know how I'm going to deal with them, the other chickens have pretty well sorted things out, so I'm not sure I even want to try putting a roo in the mix.

Everyone stay dry and warm today!

Wouldnt happen to have a pic of juvinile welsh harlequins? I've got a lone young duckie out here I'm not sure what breed he may be. He was supposedly an ancona, but definately isn't. Too small and colored entirely WRONGGG. I'm wondering what he might be ( might be a crossbreed for all I'd know) The order came in from a hatchery, and he was in with a box full of anconas

WWW!!!!! Had to get back on. THE BABIES ARE HERE!!!!!! I just got done showing them how to eat and drink, took right to it. The heater pack in the box was still going strong and were very well packed. Forgot how noisy they are. Gotta go back out and be mother hen. I swear I'm going to learn to post pics this week! Their too cute not to share!

Well my Gosh! Gone for a few days and I think I had 5 pages to read to catch up with everyone's goings on! First WELCOME to all the new faces! So nice to have you join us.
I was sorry to hear of the owl attack--had that happen here too and couldnt believe it when I had a Great Horned Owl in my live trap!!! So they do go after stuff on the ground...even if it is in a trap!
Glad every one else is doing OK--I am finally thawed out after out vacation. We had 31* and spent the day dodging rain, then snow, then ice pellets, then sleet. We gave up on the fire and got inside the trailer in our sleeping bags and spent the day reading and napping! We sleep in our horse trailer...sweep it out, put down some indoor/outdoor carpeting and set up our cots. Kinda chilly when it is lower that 45 or 50 degrees. THank Goodness DH suggested we bring a milkhouse heater with us and that we splurged for electricity this time! My Mom asked why we went...how can you forgo an 11 year tradition? Sunday was gorgeous for riding-- the stars Sunday night were nothing short of miraculous. I had forgotten how beautiful the night sky is in Northern WI!
I have to tell you all about this funny bird we watched cross the road. It was doing a little dance! Two steps then a double bounce on one leg, then a few more steps and another bounce!

I stopped the truck and we watched it for about 5 minutes. We were laughing so hard...found out it was an American Woodcock when we got home. Very cool! I only had one tick crawling in my hair...got to check the dogs yet...the horses were very good-no spills. Although we dont usually have them, sometimes stuff happens...like the woman that broke 3 ribs and her scapula! OUCH!
So everything is OK here at the farm. One of the Anconas had to come it this morning because the cold was getting to her so she joined the 5 little ones from FFA in the basement. I hope I caught her in time. The baby goat perished while I was gone as did my female pekin and my "wild man" roo. I found the "shell" of the pekin today while chasing the geese back. (out of the corn field!) Nothing left but a skeleton and wings and beak...not dismembered though. I imagine she was starting a nest. I found an egg with her membranes still around it that I put under another sitting duck...maybe? I have no idea about the little goat...he was fine on Friday. WIld Man drowned in the goat water tub.

I just cant seem to go anywhere without having casualties!
I think I am going to turn on the heat...it is COLD in here! Nice to be back though...Terri O

Afternoon All... what a perfectly crappy day outside for humans....

The javas are doing really great. They really love to forage in the bedding already. One was standing on the quart waterer the other day when suzie checked on them. She wished she would of had a camera in her hands. To little tobe doing that stuff already.

Doc, I didn't hatch the buckeyes. I'm picking them up tommorrow from the breeder that my javas came from. He is on byc, hoping he will stop in and visit us. He bought a incubator from BCC, and sold hatching eggs to Jim. BCC has java eggs from him too. I invited him to the bash. Hope he can make it. Really nice guy, with a real nice variety of birds.

My Light Brahma that usually goes broody is at it again. I'll see if I can get some hatching eggs when I pick up the buckeyes tommorrow.

Glad you stopped by. I'm within yelling distance to you in Marion.

Sorry MTF, that you lost a silkie to the owl.

Terri, that reminded me of the time we had 3 milk house heaters goin in the house during the dead of winter and no heat except for them. Kept the water inthe house from freezing solid though.
I was glad when the wood boiler was finally installed. Yep feels good today too!
