Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

DrH I'd wait at least 4 weeks, if you can handle it 6. sorry it took so long but I've been just skimming posts right now, unless I notice something, I'm going to be MIA till next sun, got to go make sure no one give the show birds beer this year

DrH) You are too funny! Gas, jars, and beer! lol. And don't worry, I will kill everyone I see if you are eaten alive!

Not a whole lot going on around here (it's the unemployment thing, sheesh!). Went out and harvested like...12 cukes. They are out of control! So I made pickles. These cukes were bigger than suggested size, but my pickling cukes that were 3 inches or so had more seeds and junk than the 8 inchers! Pssh! I will say, those pickles looked SO good. I made up my own recipe, seeing as they are refridge pickles figured I didn't have to worry too much. Couple huge gugs of vinegar, almost double that in water, couple scoops of salt, a dash of sugar. Made 3 quart jars spicy and one regular. 3 of them spears, one sandwhich slices. I'm pretty proud of them. Minute I got them filled and capped, hubby wanted to whisk them away to the fridge! I had to label them!

I went and cut myself with the knife good too. You know, I've never cut myself with a knife cutting anything, it's always when i'm doing something else with them! I was washing it with the sponge, and we must have just sharpened it as it cut through the sponge and into my thumb! Owch.

We talked about our future farm, you should have seen his face when I explained meaties to him! haha. Then I told him doing 20ish at a time and his jaw dropped. He told me we don't eat that much chicken! We eat chicken at LEAST 5x a week! Sure, we don't eat a whole roaster, but we for sure eat 2-3 breasts at a time. Maybe he didn't think about me cutting them up
hu.gif
who knows.

He also says it would be a good idea to buy a calf and raise it for butcher. Then I threw the idea of getting a heifer and renting a bull, and using the calf for meat and the cow as a milk cow and he said "that's not a bad idea!"

raw milk for me! cheesemaking here I come! Ya know if we are going to do this food movement, we gotta do it, or get out of the game!

Oh, I also gave my dad a bunch of garden veggies we had extras of (which included those dang little eggplants that are going CRAZY. And some cukes) he was so excitied and eagerly asked when I will be making more cherry jam. Ah, to be appreciated for your efforts makes it all worth while

I forgot to answer that question! I got them from Keith LeGrande (I'm not sure if I spelled his last name right...), his username is alwayscochins here on BYC, and he got three of these birds directly from Judy Gantt (she's the #1 Cochins International Master Breeder in the Bantam Mottled variety right now, #4 in Blacks, and #2 in Whites)...one of the Blue Mottled hens was directly from Jamie Matts (again, if you're not familiar with him, he's one of the top 3 or 4 names in Cochins), and then there were, I believe, 4 birds that he raised himself. I have it all written down in a binder, I just don't know where the darned thing is at the moment. In any event, these birds aren't just pretty. They're some of the best. I mostly got them because they're pretty though!

Well, it's my mom's birthday today, so I'm off to bake a cheesecake! Hopefully I'll have it finished and cooled in time - the day kind of got away from me. The two White Cochin hens I just got must have got in a scuffle last night (I knew one was WAY more dominant than the other and was scaring her off the food and water dishes, but I hadn't seen her do any damage), because the smaller one had her comb and the top of her head all pecked this morning, and a little trickle of blood had run down and dried into her nostril, the poor thing! I spent a good part of the day getting her set up in her own little cage, cleaning her all up, and giving her lots of special attention. I'm hoping once I have their proper coop all finished (I have the Blue Mottled coop nearly done now - it's stained and painted, just need shingles, but I haven't even started the White coop yet!) and they have more room I can reintroduce her. We'll see. Otherwise she might just have to be my very special house-chicken! We've named her "Pearl".

I came back alive unless I got bitten by zombie squito's. Dang it! ++++++ no wait that's for vampires. I'm done for the day that's all I'm gonna say till tomorrow. Except for this. Raiquee Me too funny? I'm having a ball reading your posts! Just love the plans parts! Might want to rethink the meaties a tad. We ended up with 13 butchered, gave some away, and still have probably 3 left in the freezer from mid summer last year. I started butchering at 9 weeks and finished at 12 weeks. They were CornishX. Will never raise them again together with other chickens. Newbie mistake. But you said 2-3 breasts. These breasts overflowed a dinner plate, I'm talkin a full breast not a half, bone in. It makes 3 big meals plus my nibbling to devoid the bones of meat. It makes me smile that you guys are heading the direction of honesty and truth in living. There's hope for the future. Thanks a lot but your too late BCC I popped them this morning, I mean L would have if she would have been here. I figured I'd better make sure they were safe for her. It's the kind of guy I am you know. Think in the next day or two they'll be a bit firmer but only testing will tell. Their so good with the beverage of your choice as are most pickled things. Thanks for the addition to the recipe! Hope you survive the show bird thing. Holy C Becky that is so close to what I envision Buster to develope into. Except of course he'll much more handsome.

Dontcha love the talks? It really makes my day! Just one more thing that makes me smile and giggle. You have one handsome and loving boy there! Raimnel The door needs to be bigger! How else am I going to get from my bed to my pool? Good Job! Gotta love it when they surprise you and behave. But that always worries me. OK what are they gonna pull next? OK now I'm done! Good night Mrs. Kalabash where ever you are!

Early Evening to All....nice to read everyones stories....yep the skeets are really bad some days here too. Went to the turkey backpack for the last few drops of my 100% deet. I was able to pick the cukes after using the last precious stuff.
The gardens are keeping us busy...Nueske's meat's had a special on there bacon ends...BBC, you are right about good cheap stuff...the cut before was $6.99, i LIKE $.99 /LB BETTER it makes it taste better. Suzies broccoli salad with sharp cheese and bacon is enough to make you clap...

Busy day for posting-just had to read 2 pages and that was only since this am!

Worked on painting in one of the units today, tomorrow will be going to a different one that needs to be done ASAP so the new tenant can start moving in(they want it early and are willing to pay rent
woot.gif
)

DD's team lost the game on friday and won 1 and lost 1 on Sat so they didn't come away with any medals, on top of that her knees have been hurting her since spring and more so when she tried to play the catchers position-poor kid played the last inning as catcher with tears coming down her face because they didn't have another kid to take the position. Took her in Sunday morning and found out it's do to growing and is a painful enlargement of the bump of the shin bone just below the knee, so we are putting on ice and ibprofin and having rest throughout the day.

Went and picked some beans and pickles in the garden this afternoon-bean plants are being eaten along with the beans by something so might just make up a batch or hopefully 2 of dilly beans for DH and call it done. Pickles aren't doning much better-the ones that got to cuc size are turning an orange color so I have pitched a lot out.
sad.png

Have a batch of dill pickles done and trying to find energy to work on beans-might have to wait till tomorrow as I am running out of steam.

bigzio would Suzie be willing to share the broccoli salad receipe?

I got a nice surprise yesturday morning. I was sitting on the computer and all of a sudden i started to hear peeping coming from my incubator. Now mind you there are only supposed to be guinea eggs in the incubator that arn't due to hatch until next week. So my first thought was that I had the days wrong. Well when I looked in the incubator this little chick was running around:

Anyways turns out my husband accidently slipped a bantam egg in with the guinea ones
lau.gif

I guess to his defense it did look like a guinea egg. Anyways he's doing well and I just went to sunnyside today and got him 5 buddies

OK FBG...is that a male child with nothing but shoes on in your Avatar? THat's what it looks like to me...and the funny thing is I have a pic of my son in that same position! Did a double take 'cause it kida looks like him too!

DrH and others...barring any blight your tomatoes dont have a problem. They are what is called a Determinate type--meaning that all the tomatoes on the plant come at once and ripen and the plant dies. If you have the Indeterminate type then they start to ripen and will continue to flower and set more fruit until the frost kills them. What I like to do with my Indeterminate ones are pull them roots and all before that killing frost--then you hand them upside-down in the basement (I group a couple of plants and hang them from the water pipes with baler twine) and the fruits will continue to ripen until Christmas or so! They aren't quite as good as right from the garden but are a darn site better than storebought! OK--gardening lesson over!

Man--there were so many other things that I wanted to respond to....oh yeah--that coop looks fabulous KAQ! You have some lucky ducks! I am going to steal your design for my little chicken coops I think. I am sure I can make them myself if I stop thinking BIG! ANnarie--I am starting to think that I might like to get into showing cochins...hmmmm---eggs in spring? Becky--if you are going up to DrH's be sure to swing by and pick me up! Sounds like a GREAT road-trip!

OK I HAVE to go back to bed...the college visit was great but exhausting...I am suffering from information overload ! and I am getting bitter up worse in here than I was outside!!! YUK! Goodnight--Terri O

Good Morning Good People! TO understand the determinate and indeterminate, didn't know about it before. But these are Roma's and have grown them before had blight last year to some degree but not seeing it this year. Not seeing any new blossoms. Maybe they are determinate will definitely look closer at the labels next year. Thanks for the info! Some are starting to ripen. fbg that is a neat surprise! Tomorrow I get to remove the turner and add water. Most are due to hatch Sunday. We have a fam reunion in Baraboo Sun. won't be staying long. Annarie will be going through your neighborhood will beep and wave at everyone on HH just in case your close by. Pearl fits well but think I would have gone with Fluffy or Snowball
big_smile.png
Very pretty bird! Bigzio went grocery shopping yesterday and the shelves were empty of squito spray. Big surprise! Putting up beans again today have to pick everyother day now. Think this will be the last for the freezer then about 6 qts of dilly beans then we'll start giving the rest away. Wish you all were closer. Just had a thought need any beans on sunday Annarie? Have run to Rapids this morning and to BFF's to get some cabbage and celery. Yummie!

No that's my daughter. her hair is just pulled back into a pony tail. she's wearing an orange shirt and pink skirt so i guess I can see how it looks like she has no clothes on. And she's holding a buff orpington chick. I'll try to change the pic to a better one. It's hard to get a nice pic in such a tiny space

I think if you click on it you can see it better.
