Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

They must do them all in the same week H&R! Mine is on THursday. August is mandatory and I am not pleased that I have to miss my Master Gardener's meeting to go! Then we have our General meeting next Thursday. I am seriously thinking about getting out this year and just helping the new leader or at least trying to get a commitment from another adult for some help seeing as this is DDs last year. Oh that makes me feel so old!

I think your eggs will be fine H&R...when one gets broken in a nest and the gunk gets all over the others they still seem to hatch OK...great that you have a pip! Are these the Welsummers or am I a batch behind? Ya know...

I sure wish you were closer Raimnel...you could come and brave the skeeters and pick in my garden! Was yours the garden that got flooded? I was thinking that was BCC?

again...maybe I should just go to bed! Oh no--I cant! I have chicken in the oven and I have to make my trade canned goods tonight. I am going to trade a jar of pear/ginger preserves for a jar of chokecherry jelly. THat is what we decided--she is sending hers from MN this week so I have to get going on it!

Did I tell you guys I had to take another cat in for bad teeth today? He has been on antibiotics for a couple of weeks and today was his surgery. Low estimate $399 high is $569!

I think those were the numbers! I almost dropped my teeth! Haha...that was funny! (at least something was about this!) I am sure you can picture what I almost told the vet! I have to pick him up tomorrow. If I am not posting you will know that it was the high end one!

There goes another hickory nut...better get out there sooner than later I guess...have a great night everyone! Good sleeping weather again! Terri O

I have used it for stock...reminds me of when my youngest went to a friend's place for soup and went to dip some out of the pot on the table and came up with a chicken foot. She was very leery of eating there again...

I always took them out before serving...SSHHHHH! T

What does he need done?

Took lots of pictures of the birds today; I'm just going to share my one favorite - the Columbian Cochins are really growing up:

Had a goose get loose on me this morning. Had to go chasing him through the woods to herd him away from the neighbor's property (they have 3 Black Labs that aren't always confined). Finally chased him into a deep kiddie pool that he couldn't get back out of. It was quite a workout.

Anyways, lots to do!

beautiful birds there!!

So I had to share and you seemed like the best group to share with!! Just heard from our neighborhood association and we got the go-ahead for our coop and up to 6 chickens or so. (yeah) I didnt think it would be a huge issue because we live in the country and have a few acres as do our neighbors... but you never know how someone is going to react.

so now I need to find me a coop. Hubby is normally handy but does not want to get that involved with this project... it is all mine. Saw a builder on craigslist with some gorgeous coops that are reasonably priced. Going to Mad City Coop tour next weekend so maybe can get some ideas there and see about a builder there.

Want to get babies so will wait for spring because I want best chance of success with spring. Already know breeds I prefer. Is it bad to get one of each breed (since we are hoping for pullets anyway for eggs)?

On a side note just canned up some spaghetti sauce! Wish I had more zucchini this year for my zuc pickles but the woodchucks ate too many of them,. Oh well. Have to can some pears. Any other pear receipes besides plain canned pears??

Thanks

Another beautiful cool morning everyone! Bec sorry to hear about the chick you too H&R! TO my parents went through that too with their cat hate to tell but their bill was over 5. Couldn't believe it. I too have some hickory nuts this year usually the tree rats get them before they hit the ground. Raimnel sorry to hear about your garden. Any chance you can move it to higher ground. Don't know what next year will bring. Annarie beautiful birds! Looked at them too before deciding on the SLW's. krisptip sounds like your on your way! Heading out this morning to drop 3 trees along the ditch going to have to pull one with a comalong to keep it off the power wires. Went to fire up the tractor yesterday and it was strangely out of gas put some in and discovered that the tank is leaking. Oh goodie something else to do. Figured out a rain cap for the house chimney so that's on the today's list also. Better get moving. Have a good one!

Terri. I never ment for them to get loose. I also PAID BCC for them. I am sorry that they got away. But I am also getting upset that you keep refering to it like I purposely let them go. PLEASE DROP IT!!!

Lost one of the ducklings that my broody duck hatched last night - the one that I had let her keep that ended up with a hurt leg. The limp was getting much better and it was keeping up with the rest, and then all of the sudden last night the poor little thing was hunched in the corner of the brooder rocking back and forth. Got some poly-vi-sol and a little bit of honey down, which perked it up considerably, but when I got up at 1:00 a.m. to repeat the process it had already passed away.

I suspect that the duck picked it up and threw it or shook it and managed to damage some of the internal organs, not just the leg.

The rest are all doing great - growing like weeds, it's nuts. They have more of a Hookbill look to them than the other Hookbill/Campbell crosses I hatched this year (those had a Hookbill mom and Campbell dad, and these have a Hookbill dad and Campbell mom. Seems to make a difference!).

Yes TO i'm the one who lost the garden to water...... and no I'm not gonna pick urs! I have enough skeeters here, I live in a swamp, go out side and you breathe and eat the skeeters.
sickbyc.gif
DrHa I'm planning on digging a "pond" for our ducks and using dirt to raise the garden, along with any other dirt I can find. sorry annarie about ur ducky
hit.gif
what's the copyright thing on ur pic for? BCC and TO I would puke if i found feet in my soup! I have heard it makes great broth but I'll pass!
sickbyc.gif
TO thankfully my cats have not needed dental work, it would be to hard for me to pay that bill. it's bad enough my dog needed an emergency spay, $500 later shes back to her self. which reminds me, I think i gotta call the vet, she stitches are still in there?! its been months now? and yes if their gonna charge me for removing them..... I'm gonna do it myself!
rant.gif
sorry i'm done. My dogs love barking at the ducks, its driving me crazy. gotta run!

I've been putting watermarks on all my pictures lately because the website www.efowl.com has been taking pictures from here on BYC, cropping the backgrounds out, and using them to sell their birds! They've stolen pictures from fattie, Sundown Silkies, and Msbear now (and the picture of hers they were using was a Columbian Cochin, just like mine), and I've heard that they were also using a picture of a Welsh Harlequin duck from an Australian breeder without his permission. And I've seen pictures belonging to cochinman2005 on other people's websites, I'm sure without his permission. I'm a little more paranoid about it now, because I have some nice-quality birds - I don't want my pictures popping up on efowl or ebay to sell someone else's hatching eggs!
somad.gif

You'll notice if you go to their website now, they're missing a LOT of pictures - I e-mailed the people who's pictures I recognized, they contacted the website, and the pictures were taken down. I know you had a pretty good experience with them, babylady4, but what a sleazy website!

Anyways, I almost burned the house down today! I started some grilled cheese for the kids (my little sisters and the neighbor girl, not my kids, I'm too young for that!
smile.png
), put it in the pan and had to run outside quick to get the birds some water. Well, of course, I totally forgot I had food on the stove, got to doing some things out in the yard, and I heard the phone ring. Went inside and the house was full of smoke (smoke detectors didn't go off, I'll have to check that out later today). I got the stove turned off and the house aired out really quick - thank goodness the phone rang! And it was friskebluegills calling about those ducklings, so BYC probably saved me from having another house burn down today!
