Beckyschicks.....glad you caught that rat. But I gotta say, I had a PET rat before I was married and had mice as pets when I was a kid. Those don't scare me one bit. I'm the spider phobia person.

My rat's name was "Gus Gus" after the fat mouse in the Disney carton Cineralla.

Well-gonna be camping in our new camper this weekend. Hope all goes well. We're not going far so.....

Blue gills, thanks alot for some ideas, I did some yahoo imaging and like the barred rocks and blue laced red wayondottes looks wise. How friendly do chickens get if around them everyday?

raimnel, I'm gonna go with making a box inside the shed and take away the fence in front and seal the front ( I think).

WC- you should get some cochins for your boy, some good layers(RIR, buff ops,Barred rocks) for eggs, and a polish for entertainment.
Terri-Those farmers better be wrong, I don't think I can handle another day like this. My only thing is if I set out poison(in cans or boxes so no chicks can get it) and the rat eats it and dies were the chickens can get it and say they think it looks like a snack, could the poison hurt them? I guess in my head I think it would, but I could be wrong.

Ok going to check on my chicks again. The dog is getting locked in the barn/quail area tonight(sorry Tucker, I'll make you a bed) and I have the trap set again. Hopefully I've seen the last of the rats.

Late evening tonight-friends of ours stopped in to see the babies and visit with us for awhile.

As of now we have 7 babies out, 7 eggs that we're waiting on to see what they might do and 1 baby that started and didn't make it

, we are excited for the new babies!

Congrats on the new hatches, and the trapper among us. I hate rats too.

Doc It's Butcher-Packer...you can order on-line or request them to send you a catalog. We buy alot of bulk spices and big rolls of freezer paper there.

BCC, how's the javas looking. Mine are looking really nice. I have 15 and 11 are cockerals. I have 2 nice looking males. They are getting randy and freezer camp for the extras is closing in quickly now.
The 3 Amigos from Annarie are different with one part auburn, one mottled, and one black. Different in structure also.

My personal fave would be the Copper Marens, but I like the Easter Eggers too. All those beautiful blue and green eggs, and the chickens are stunning as well! Where are you located in Portage County? FM and I are just a hop away on Hwy 10 in Waupaca County!

I have a friend competing in the local tri-athelon just 2 months after having baby #6!!!!

I give her a LOT of credit for even attempting such a feat! She gets bonus points for competing so soon after the baby too in my book!

fm looks like you'll have great weather for breaking in the camper!! Have a good time! When I was cleaning up some of the mess yesterday found a few small grapes that were ripe it made me go look at my main vines. No grapes, they produce every other year this was supposed to be the year don't know what the hey!

Going to take some cuc's and grn beans to a guy at work. Really don't want to even walk in there. Glad to find them a home! Looks like rain moving in going to make a big batch of spanish rice and a meat loaf for the freezer today. WC you might want to think about some space for them inside for the winter there will days when they won't want to go outside. Go into the breeds section and the learning center at the top it'll give you some guidence. Hey BBCB where are you? How ya doing? My inquiring mind wants to know.

Babylady, I am on Hwy. 54 halfway between plover and paca! So close by! Hmmmm.

So I am gonna use my lattice work Area for their run and hopefully buy a box or something, put it in the shed and make an access door. Will take off the fence part but was hoping to keep it as that would be their only chance to get at some grass! This way they will never have access to grass, will just be cooped up all the time!
So I am looking to buy a box or coop to put in the shed. Otherwise I will have to (try) to build something

As far as the type of chicken, There again, Overwhelmed... You can house diff. chickens together correct? But I think Becky I am going to have to get some cochins!

Holy guacamole guys! Although, I have been gone for a half a week. lol you guys still talk a bunch!

So, should I technically be posting in the "MI" section as i'm a yooper this week?

We love it up here! Went out fishing while the in-laws watched the baby. Now, keep in mind, I ALWAYS outfish my husband. So, we go on the lake and are fishin for walleyes. I got a 30ish pound pike on, and hes pulling the boat everywhere. He dug himself in some weeds and got himself tangled. So I fought him for awhile, and we pushed the boat around to try different angles. Soon, hubby decided he wanted to try and get him out, I gave it to him and within 3 minutes it "dropped the hook" and took off. Grrr. So, we fish some more, I caught a super small perch. Hubby pulls in 5 legal walleyes and 2 HUGE smallies. Me? 2 tiny tiny perch. What the F***?!?!?!

Now, if I was also catching fish, who cares? But there is nothing I hate more than being on the boat for 8 hours and getting skunked, while the person i'm with nails em. DH also got 2 legals the night before we went.

DS seems to be having fun up here. DH's cousin was up with their daughter who is a year older, and they played and played. Shes a sassy girl though, got a little 'tude. Hope she didn't teach DS anything!! DS is watching Sesame street for the first time, (we don't usually let him watch TV) and he is loooooving it. Never seen him soo quiet. Hope hes learning. His sleeping schedule is messed up, seeing as we are in a different time zone here. He went to bed at 11 pm (WI time) and woke up at 8 am! (WI time) ugh!! He hasn't really had a nap either while we have been here, we keep doing stuff.

I also canned my pickles, 5 quarts. DH said perfect saltiness. GOOD. 3 are spicy, and 2 a deadly (aka, half a habenero in each jar, as well as chiles) Still not sure when we are coming back, Sunday or Monday I think. I start school on thursday!

Booo. Gotta prep myself for that.

to WC! I don't have chickens (I'm not allowed to either) but we have ducks (who won't be living with us when they are older, but with our sons babysitter) So I can't offer a lot of advice. I can tell you the Cochins aren't the best layers, because they tend to go broody. I am looking and buff orps and EEs myself. I want a rainbow of eggs.
