Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Good Evening to All....Welcome back BBCB. Glad you are back to work and back on the cheeseheads. Yep, we had the real chill in the air today. Dug another 5 gal pail of spuds today. One row to go! Butchered two more today. Need to get the nest boxes built in the new coop soon.
amyable, I'll let Jim know about your keeper roo. He's doing good and we talk almost daily. His potato crop is great this year. He planted 100lbs of seed!

Have Fun, Stay Safe.... ~ bigzio

Great Morning All! Raimnel beat ya by an hour today. 4:30! Couldn't keep my eyes open any longer last night and am paying the price this morning. Your chicken pizza sounds delish! I am the bread making machine.

Don't know what I did different this time but the pan of rolls turned out really fluffy. Need another loaf pan the recipe makes enough for 3 loaves I only have 2 pans so I make a pan of rolls. Don't blame anyone with a job and or kids for using a machine. BBCB glad to hear that your slw's are laying so that means mine will be laying soon have been in an egg drought here for too long. GC your petting zoo idea made me laugh! Going to get caught up on some small projects today then into the woods tomorrow. Don't forget to kiss your chickens today, they don't seem to like it much but I do.

Dang it! Dr. H you must have sleeping issues......

Brine shrip experiemets today at the UW. Always fun.
Who said it could go straight from Summer to Fall? I swear, first day of school and let's drop the temps 20*!!!

Ok Dr. H. I am going to try and work on my bread baking skills. My sis bought me The Bread Bible and now I am going to give it a whirl. I was reading it last night befor I went to sleep and my dreams were filled with Bagettes, Sourdoughs, and Artisan loaves...... I think I am in the wrong business.... I would love to have the other two books as well, The Cake Bible and The Pie and Pastry Bible. Look out Bakery here I come!

Ok, off to make my breakfast/lunch and get some joe. I'll be peeking in off and on through the day though....

Hey guys/gals
sad.png
Well I went from being super proud of building my coop and getting a nice mixed flock in 2 weeks, to feeling real dumb!
Well my sneezy hurt eye brahma died, my lil sneezy silkie died, I culled the other sneezy frizzle that I got from the same place as the other 2 sick ones.. I woke up to the 2 dead birds yest. morn. and decided to cull the 3rd shortly there after! Was hoping I could just be done with the 3 chickens that brought it and be good? Wrong woke up this morn to a lathargic bantam cochin and a sneezy runny nose E.E.

I have had them all on duramycin after noticing the 3 sneezing 4 days ago. A mistake is a mistake as long as a lesson is learned, never buy a bunch of chickens all at once from diff. places and just put them in together! Always check out your birds before buying!! So now what is my next move? just keep them on duramycin and hope for the best? Take the whole flock out and start over slowly? Change meds? I'm guessing it's brinchitus, coryza, or mycoplasma or something who knows I'm sad .. Dreery day

Be well, W.C.
Thanks Babylady but you can give your good news
smile.png

I think I'm crying as much for myself as for the chickens it was alot of work and money, I was proud..
I have this posted in the sick chickens forum as well!
Is there anything that could possibly affect my dogs? They are my life!

Oh WC how sad! I hope all works out for the best! Don't come down on yourself to hard, your learning just like the rest of us. Even the experts are learning everyday. BBCB- Welcome back!!! So glad that you found employment that you wanted and are back to the schedule of the living. Amyable- So glad I'm done with the sleepless nights. Sorry you do have my sympathy though.
Well the fall bug has bitten. I'm baking and cooking up a storm. Cleaning the house from top to bottom and then moving outside. Went up north this past weekend and the trees are turning up there.

I love fall but I hate winter. Don't know if I'll be at the next chickenstock/get together. That is a big birthday weekend for us. DD7 and DD14 birthdays are the 15th and 25th. I'll try. Well I have to get back to it. Making bread and potato soup for supper, DH says my soups are resturant quality,( I think he's just a kiss up

and chocolate walnut cake for dessert. Also have to get started on school again too. Started today, looked at my classes and sighed. Tough semester. Have a great day everyone!

Hello everyone!!

WC that is so sad. I would be crying my eyes out if any of my chicks died. Hopefully things will get better though!

Well I got the 2 new chicks yesterday. The ones that were listed as Ameraucanas but are from a hatchery so they are probably EEs. They are adorable either way! I currently have them in a 10 gallon aquarium with a screen lid and I stoled the 100 watt ceramic heat lamp from my snake and used it for the new chicks. All my other chicken stuff it in the big cage with my 3 week old Orpingtons so I had to come up with something. I put the two cages next to each other and maybe that was a mistake. My Orpingtons were interested in the new chicks for about 10 mins and then got bored and began doing the same old things, but the EE 3 day old chicks are obsessed with the older chicks and run back and forth trying to get by the older ones.

It's odd how obvious the two different breeds are already. My Orpingtons are very quiet and relaxed and just go with the flow where the EE chicks are sooo loud and are talking constantly and always running around and trying to "take on" the larger chicks. It's fun to watch. I'm still hoping to get some other breeds and just rotate the ones I keep inside and the ones I keep outside. That way they can all get fresh air but I won't have too many outside at once since I still can't find the number allowed in Manitowoc. My neighbors don't seem like the kind that would notice if some of the chickens switched every once and awhile. So I'm planning on either buying some BCMs and "olive eggers" or waiting till one of my Orpingtons goes broody and letting her hatch some.

Oh, WiscoChiko, how terrible!

I have another sick bird too - my favorite little Columbian Bantam Cochin this time. I think he's just been being bullied by his brothers (are you guys sure you don't want them?
wink.png
), I noticed he'd been a little "off" the past week or so, and then the other day I picked him up and he weighs nothing and his face and comb had gone a little pale. So, he's been living in a cat carrier in my bedroom for the past few days, getting lots of special attention and treats. He's perking up and eating lots - I woke up to him crowing this morning

, so I think it was just an issue of him being the bottom boy in the flock.

I have some more Mottled Bantam Cochin eggs coming from Frizzledhen here on BYC - they should have gone out in the mail today!
wee.gif
I needed more you see, because the 5 Blue Mottled hens I have right now are (I think) all related besides one. You guys know my motto - just this last hatch, and then I'm done for the year, I promise.

Anyways, I've been super-busy with school!

They may have chicken lice. Sprinkle them with Sevin Dust. You can get that at Fleet or Menards or just about any where. It's actually for the garden, but it works great on birds too. Make sure you get around the vent good and under the wings. After 10 days or so repeat and all your bugs should be gone.

However, that probably was not what killed them. But they can cause chickens to slow or even stop laying. It sounds like it's a respetory disease of some kind.

So sorry for your loss. Hopefully the others will have a good amune system and can work through it. I still think you should put them on the Corid instead.

P.s. You should also sprinkle the nesting boxes and the floor in the coop too.
