Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Early Evening All....Special Welcome to OB and LC....good folks here to help with anything that comes your ways!
Finished with the grinding of the burger today. Ended up with a total of 74lbs of meat. We ground 36 lbs, saved all the good steaks and back straps. We took 15 lbs to the butcher for galic summer sausage, and really feel blessed. Prolly only need one more for us and we have plenty for the whole year.

The new flock is really at home now. The pullets go back to the coop during the day to lay...and that's nice for sure. The Buckeye cockerals leave my old hens alone...that's nice too!

Go Pack tomorrow on the late Sunday game. Hope they can pull it off big time for once.

Stay Safe.... ~ bigzio

Evening all! Hello to LC and OB. Welcome! Sorry to hear about you losses BL4 and Raimnel. That just sucks and it sucks even more that you don't know why. Hope everything works out for you guys. Terri-We will have to talk when spring is here. I want to hatch eggs, I feel like if they imprint on you right from the beginning they tend to be better. Good luck witht he buttons, I have seen her website and think it's great. Actually thought about getting some from her too. Let me know how it goes for you. BL4-DH and I were talking and I would like a couple of call ducks in the spring. Do you think that maybe you would maybe sell me hatching eggs this spring? Otherwise I will maybe talk to Anniarie too. Speaking of has anyone heard from her? Ok off to do chores. Talk to you later!

BC, no problem! I am going to segregate them for breeding purposes in the spring; the mallards and the buff on one side of the pen and the magpies and the black one on the other side. Just lwt me know if you want babies or eggs, if eggs I'll try to mark them with the date they were laid and which grouping they are from. I need to get in contact with Annarie too and ask her how her babies from Alpine are doing.

You would think after getting up at 4:45 and running off to work I would come home and nap. NOT! I decided to make a grand dinner for the family! Baked chicken, mashed red potatoes, peas, sauteed mushrooms, homemade applesauce, and some nice crusty bread (leftover from yesterday). Then we all sat around and watched Superman (Chris Reeve), and then after that Jeff Dunham!

I am finally starting to wind down so I am getting off this thing.

Night all and enjoy that extra hour of sleep!

Good Early Morning All! Internal clock said it was 5:45, it wasn't. Welcome LC no need to lurk! Join in the banter. BL4 supper sounds excellent! L's making chicken with fixins tonight. Bigzio know your happy about all that meat, the mention of sausage has me salivating. Raimnel sorry to hear about losing your hen!!! That is a cute pic of her as a chick! My comment was just because you changed the color of your post that's all. TO yup had my LJ's on all day. Took all day to empty the shed sort and organize. Still a couple of hours left on that job. Need to clean the coop today too. Really gettin the itch to make some bread it's been over a month. Supposed to be really nice today so get out there and enjoy it!!!!

Ha DrH---my internal clock said 8 (and so did all the dogs') so it was up for me! Feels funny posting before 8 AM! Of course by the time I finish writing this it will be well after 8!

Dont ever call me shy! So when I was out with the dogs it was beautiful! Such a change from yesterday morning! No Frost! Nice...
We are just picking up new folks all the time arent we? Good thing 'cause the students seem to be real busy with school and life! Nice to have you catch up Raiquee! Havent heard a peep from you (or is it a quack?) Speaking of quacks...did you ever capture those renegades? Becky got her quail...I hope you were as lucky!
We had a great dinner last night. DD18 was home so we got some steaks and she and her sister grilled them. Then they picked some brussels sprouts from the garden (so GOOD after these frosty mornings!) Some broccoli-rice stuff and sauteed mushrooms (my addition--she hates them!) We were so full that we didnt even have out coconut cake for desert! I sent THEM grocery shopping...that was the best part! I will say that they dont stick to a list very well though.

We carved out pumpkins yesterday too...waited for dd...my kids sure like to keep traditions alive for a LOOOONG time! Their brother didnt come home from UW Milwaukee though so we were missing him. Here is a pic of our 'kins:

The kids were mad that mine turned out...I took my time and picked an easy image! In the middle we have Sponge Bob minus several fingers (dd24) and on the right is dd18s rendering of a picture she took of herself and her sister. She can see it, I cant!
So DH is finally up--can tell he lives by the clock...he said he wanted to stay in bed cause the Pack plays late tonight and he has to get up early. (but of course cant miss the game!) He is going to Madison to take dd18 and her moped back to school and to exchange the fish tank heater he got in spring. It got a crack in it and it's a high tech plastic one. Poor fish...good thing we only have 2 left! BTW...anyone in need of a 14 inch Plecostomus? I would like to give him to a good home and get a little one and start over!

Raimnel--I have had chickens gutted like that and it was a coon that did it. You better get some traps set and get rid of it ASAP. It will keep coming back until they are all gone. (personal experience here!) You could also post in the predator forum--or just look at some of the descriptions--try not to feel too bad.

We have all done it a time or two! It always seems to be the best of friendliest or favorite HEN of the bunch too. Remember my foster dog last week?

OK--it's past 8 now...I can quit typing! LOL Get out and enjoy that weather (we are going riding) and as always, Have a fantastic day! Terri O

Terri, your pumpkin turned out great! Sorry, I can't see what your DD's do in the other ones though

That's our tradition every year too - family pumkin carving. Hey, I ended up with one Ancona roo and 3 hens, so chicks next spring?! Or I could get you some hatching eggs if you want too. The roo is turning out nice actually, even started taking treats out of my hand (that's a breakthrough!) One of my hens has good coloring; of the other two, one is really dark and the other is too white. Ah well. They're really good foragers though, and someone just started laying little bitty white eggs (not sure if its Ancona or Polish.)

I'm friends with Annarie on FB, she's been really busy and had a rough week. I'll let her know we're looking for her.

I've been having LOTS of computer troubles. My desktop PC crashed about a month ago now and I've been using my laptop, which for some reason was only letting me on certain websites - I couldn't get on BYC, Photobucket, Facebook (although, those of you who are my Facebook friends know I have Facebook on my phone, so I'm on it ALL THE TIME
big_smile.png
). Finally had the thought to completely un-install and re-install my web browser last night and VIOLA! It works again. Silly laptop.

Out internet connection's still funky though - has been ever since that windstorm a few weeks ago. I think a tree-branch shifted and is interfering with the sattelite signal. We've already had to cut down FOUR trees to get an open area of sky for that darned dish.

I have absolutely no chance of catching up, so I'll just hop back in.

I have two new adult pairs of Columbian Bantam Cochins arriving in the next two weeks!!!
wee.gif
That's definitely the color patten I want to focus on. I lost a few Cochins in the past couple months too - I had a necropsy done at the UW Veterinary Diagnostic Lab, and it turns out that they had cancer when I got them.
sad.png
So, I've retired all the birds I got from that bloodline to the neighbor's house to be pets.

Those little Blue and Black Mottled chicks that I hatched from frizzledhen's eggs are growing up! I did lose one little runt, but I still have seven healthy 5-week-old babies - not all of whom decided to stand still for pictures!

And beckyschicks - I intend to have LOTS of Call ducklings (and eggs) in the spring. I'm finding that the bantam Cochins and the Calls are the easiest to work with with my new, busy schedule (have I told you guys that I'm taking workshops to become our county 4-H Poultry Project leader? We're the ONLY family in our 4-H group that does the poultry project - it's ridiculous!), so I want to downsize on the other breeds and focus more on them. I'm actually separating everyone into breeding groups NOW, so that I don't have to deal with it in the spring - I'll have pure Whites (lots of those hopefully - I have two really well-matched pairs), pure Butterscotches, and then I'm putting my Black drake over a Blue Bibbed and two Silver/Splash Bibbed girls, so the babies should all be Blue and Black Bibbed (no garuntees though, I'm not 100% on the genetic backgrounds of the girls). I have my Beaver Dam "rescued" White Drake too that I'm thinking of putting over my little Butterscotch/Pastel girl, just to see what interesting colors come out. Three of those girls are living in the house right now though, because I guess I moved them outside into the cold before they were ready and they got chilled. Really bad. It didn't look good for one of them for about a week. But they're all recovering now - they're in the basement, but when you open the front door and walk in the house, you sure can HEAR them greeting you! They're LOUD!

Anyways, I'm going to be lurking back around here on the forum again, I promise! I'm still busy, but at least I have a functioning computer now!

When I typed "someone might know" about BL4's loss it was a trick. Knew she couldn't resist. Glad your back and doing well over all!!! Cute babies too! Sounds like you have a plan on the breeding. Now I have to formulate some more plans to hear from others that hate us. Or just me. Amyable cool on the egg no matter which laid it! Got our second poult egg today! I'm so happy! TO 8 internal clock! You suck!

It's 4:05 and feels like more like 5:05 for some reason. Cool "kins" wish I could do something artistic other than write my name in the snow. Lefty is sooo close to workin on my last good nerve. Most of the kids worked there way around the end of the ditch and were stranded on the other side. I called them all back except for Lefty. After leaving her alone for awhile she was still by herself. So off I went, now have extra holes in my body that are weeping red stuff. A lot of brambles and some thorn trees that have short thick sturdy thorns on them. I dropped an old ladder across the ditch for a chicken bridge but see that she can't figure that out so far. Naughty chickens! Gotta go see if I can add more extra large holes to my body. Bad Naughty Chickens, Naughty! Took some pics of the boys today have to down load and see if their any good. Where are you fm? Need kin pics from you too!

Hey gang!
Cool pumpkins!! We did the Mr Potatoe head push in face this year and my kids were happy... another year with out major carving... now to hack into them to get the yummy seeds.

Well the day has finally arrived!!!! We got our 4 girls today. Aged from 6-10 month of age... some are pure and some are mixed. There is a RIR ( I think), a brahma mix, an Australorp mix and a dominique. Hopefully they are laying soon. Our only question is the light brahma mix. It is a big bird... we are just hoping it is a girl. We all thought so, but are not the experts and she has not layed yet. Here are some pics !

Anybody know somebody who would like to buy a 3+ bedroom house in town? I just found a place I would LOVE to move to! Right on the edge of the school district but closer to my job by about 10 minutes. 3.5 acres and a hot tub!!!!! Of course room for chickens and the ducks (a big pool for the ducks to swim in too!

One of those times when I would like to play 'Let's make a deal'....
