Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I do in the winter, they LOVE them and the meal worms those are dried though.
Still haven't heard from Elaine, who is here on BYC about the incubation.
DH is home from not sleeping last night and I am battling the creeping crude.

Good morning everyone! Sure must be close to spring with all the goings on! Yeah! I had so much to comment about but DH just showed me some new pics of the crisis in Japan. OMG--those poor people! The thing that he noticed today was that all the people are so orderly standing in line for water and such. No looting, rapes or murders....remember Katrina? I guess the Japanese just have much more reverence for their fellow man! A sad reflection of some of those in our country to be sure...not the folks on this board however! Chicken people are the greatest (especially the Cheesehead ones)

So anyway...nice horses Mags! All of us with them should get together for a ride! THAT would be a good time. Congrats on the hens and chicks WiChCh! Your flock looks like mine! I think we have sister birds. I am going to see what anyone says on the breeds. The reds look like the red stars that I have--or maybe they are called comets (or maybe that is 2 names for the same type?) I did notice that the EE in the first pic looks like she has scaley leg mites on the one leg...it might just be the pic though. If they are rough, coat 'em up with Vaseline every day for a week or so.
Jim I hope your Mom has forgotten about the train track thing...hopefully she wont try to do any climbing. Some of those oldsters are pretty agile when they set their mind to do something!
My dd25 jut got her Audubon Magazine and there is a big article on egg laying chickens and labeling of eggs. It is amazing what can be labeled as "free range" FIVE minutes outside per day and it can be a cramped place just like inside! There is no 3rd party regulator either. I guess I have to stop labeling my eggs as free range and start labeling them as "fenceless!"

Well--I guess I better get something done...have a fantastic day! Terri O

"fenceless eggs" I like that.. I would like to call mine organic, but if you buy all your feed, like I do, how do you know what is in it? and I will not hesitate to medicate my chickens if I have to. and I start them off with medicated chick starter, so does that negate the organic label? All I can tell my egg customers is the shells are thick and the whites are thick , if you can buy a better egg somewhere else, go ahead and buy them.....

the hatch is over.. grand total is 36 chicks from 61 eggs.. I know there are a lot of clears.. I did not check all of them yet. I am satisfied with the hatch for the first eggs of the early pre-spring....

I did have to help 4 out.. 1 didn't make it.. It seems that the ones I have to help are always too big for the shell.. don't know if they are just big chicks, or that they have grown too fast while they are hatching..

that first chicken looks like a cross between a Buff Orp and an americauna.. the last black ones, look like Ohiki or some kind of jungle fowl.. I agree with TO about the red star/red comet/sex link/golden comet,... the name depends upon what each hatchery names them..

It is true about old people, TO. when you are leading them to the dinner table table, it is like tiny "Tim Conway" walk.. but just turn your back and they become like running backs for the Packers.. LOL

I am getting anxious to clean out the coops.. I want to rebuild the roosts in the main coop to face in a different direction.. the only drawback will be that I have to make them 16 feet long.. I should go down to the woods and find some lodge poles..eh?

The patient is much better today! She is eating more, grooming, sleeping on one foot, and TALKING! Yesterday we hardly hear her make a noise at all! Her poo is looking more brown at times but we are still getting the nasty green stuff. She seems to prefer eating the mealworms over the duck food; right now I just want calories in her so I have all of it available for her. I grabbed some duckweed from the UW today for her; she gobbled that right up!

The penicillin I bought is the water soluable mix, no problems with the viscosity of the solution the issue is the short needle on the syringe! I have to push the syringe down on the rubber cap pretty hard just to break through and actually get some in! Of course, this would not be any fun at all if I did not poke myself in the process of giving the shot.......

I am going to assume she needs a 7 day treatment, so I will keep giving her .10cc every 24 hours.....

Thanks everyone for all your help!

Hey bigzio! Sorry I haven't been to da cheesehead thread for awhile...couldn't find it!

Ugh but anyway, here I am, I'll visit more often.

Yay!!! My easteregger just started laying again! Love her green eggs. Well, guys, springs coming right? Just saw my first robin of the year, always a good sign.

Buy organic feed, and save the labels for your records and you can......Except the medications. (Depending on if they fall under the organic guidelines, which I doubt). The medicated starter Does negate the Organic label as well. The law states chickens must be fed organic, non medicated feed from the second day of life.

I get a kick out of some of the places that call their eggs free range when the only free range the chickens get is the barn floor......Best put away my soap box while I am still ahead......

Moved the rabbits out of the Raken House, into the warm sunshine.....they are very happy, running around in their bigger cages acting like their crazy...LOL Gotta love the warm up.

Have a great day all!

do you mean to tel me that there is an organic "law" ? surely you jest.. it must be a guideline or suggested procedure.. If there is such a law , then why can housed chickens be considered free-range?

I am going to just call mine "natural"..

I'm the person who draws up all the vaccines and pennicillin at our humane society's monthly clinics, and I can't even count the number of times I've poked myself with the needle! One time, I even accidentally squirted canine distemper vaccine across the table into another volunteer's mouth!

I made an oopsie yesterday...bought 12+ Mille Fleur Bantam Cochin eggs from Nadine.

I have a sickness, I buy eggs without thinking. Will's throwing a fit - anyone want some MFC babies? AFTER I completely grow them out to see what I have, of course...

But, the eggs make me feel a little better this morning - it was an AWFUL night!

We have a roomate (just one left - there were 3, but I didn't get along with the other 2 and they're gone now...
roll.png
) who has a signed agreement that guests can only be in the house between the hours of 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. unless she askes permission in advance. Last night at 11:30, she brings SIX people over and they all start drinking in our living room! She assured us that they wouldn't be there long, so we went in the basement and let it slide. They left a couple of hours later. Then, we were awoken at THREE IN THE MORNING by ALL of them coming back in from the bar!
rant.gif
Went to ask when they'd be leaving, and the roomate had locked herself in her bedroom and wasn't opening the door, and all her friends were stranded at the house with no ride home. The toilet seat was broken, there was pee all over the bathroom, beer spilled on the floor, they had gotten into the fridge and were drinking all OUR liquor....Will finally drove them all home (a HALF-HOUR drive there and back) at 4:30 a.m.

After this one leaves, NO MORE ROOMATES!
