Good morning! I have a sore throat and a headache

AND I have to go to work today and be the waitress. I will be dragging this afternoon for sure!
Jim--you get a ceramic heat bulb at any pet store in the reptile section, They throw off a TON of heat; and yes, they are pricey but definitely cheaper than all those heat lamps...might be a bit more economical too--not sure though.
Dave--there is a page called Pat's great big ventilation page or something like that...check it out. It is amazing how much better the chickens do in the winter with more air! I took a top board off my coop wall this winter and I would say that the frostbite went down at least 50% from last winter. I even have a few roos that kept their points intact! The moisture is what makes frostbite is what I learned from that page--very interesting reading! Now the roos that were in the barn with those very "moist" horses are a different story!
ODrH--you were in my dreams last night!

We were at a family gathering having dinner and one of the cousins was giving rides to the little girls on their Great Dane. I told the Mom that that could really mess the dog's back up bad. Then you smiled and said that you werent going to say anything but would be happy to do the surgery to fix him up! Then we got in a long discussion about back surgery and dogs! Crazy dreams...no wonder I wake up tired!
I like that roo sitting on the fence Tiki! They look like they could really run fast! Speaking of long legged chickens...maybe someone knows the breed here? They have a similar body to those game birds but are much smaller with LOOOONG stork like legs. I saw some at the fair last year and sure wouldnt mind getting a few. Any idea what they are called?

Very true and is not something I enjoy doing. I have decided that I will only incubate again if I have to. Otherwise I have enough broody hens on a regular basis to do the work for me. Also my hatch rate are better too. This whole "playing" mother hen is exhausting!

Very true and is not something I enjoy doing. I have decided that I will only incubate again if I have to. Otherwise I have enough broody hens on a regular basis to do the work for me. Also my hatch rate are better too. This whole "playing" mother hen is exhausting!

I didn't mean that there is anything wrong with it.. I just see over and over that similar statement . it just strikes me ironically..

I enjoy the challenge of my substitute hens..

Jim- You can have it. I haven't slept for more than 4 hours for the past 3 days waiting for these little boogers. I'll let my girls do the work from now on, thank you very much.

BCC- there is no cure for our illness all we must do is keep going forward.

Oh and find our next fix. By the way if you have any MF cochins this year that you are looking to get rid of, keep me in mind. Only one of my 9 eggs hatched of that color. Otherwise if you are not willing to part with any, do you know someone who has that color? Thanks

BCC busted out laughin at the 12 step! Think maybe the only cure is to cut your head off and run around the yard flappin your arms.

Morning All.... up at 4am today to cook breakfast for the guys. Pancakes and ring bologna with donuts and juice and coffee. Suzie said men do things weird. Everyone thought it tasted great!

I'm trying Doc...the snow is killing me! We still have 2ft everywhere...even on the roof of the house....come on sun, and bring some warmer tempts too!

The Ivomec should not be used on birds kept for meat and eggs because the withdrawal period is not known. It's ok for exhibition birds if that is their whole purpose. Just a thought to keep in mind.

Won't be long now Jim till we see how many Buckeyes hatch, eh!

Gonna slap the snowshoes on and go get some fresh air and exercise!

Hi guys!

I've been super-busy lately planning a wedding and house-shopping.

We didn't end up making an offer on the other house we were looking at because someone beat us to it - made a cash offer that we couldn't beat.

But, not to worry, we found a BIGGER place still within our price range (and it's LOG - we're insisting on a log house, nothing else will do

), and it's only a 2 minute drive away from my mom's place where I grew up! We absolutely cannot afford that place and this place at the same time though, so we're rushing to get this place ready to sell. Got the garage cleaned out this morning, planning to sand and paint all the walls upstairs and replace the shower surround yet this week, and then lay down some new vinyl on the kitchen floor next week and we should be set. We were going to go with laminate hardwood in the kitchen/hallway upstairs, but we have some interested in the house who wants to use it as a rental property, so cheap and easy is better for him is anything gets damaged.

Anyways, despite not having ANYPLACE to put birds (my mom's been a trooper about having all my birds at her place, feeding them every day, and collecting eggs for me), I bought a new pair of birds this week.

They shipped today, from DANNY here on BYC. A Blue Patterned Silver Columbian project pair. If I put one of them in each of my Columbian pens, I should start getting both Blue and Black patterned Columbians. These guys were sports out of a Blue Mille project, so I can also use them with any Mille chicks that hatch next week! BUT, I candled those eggs a few nights ago and only 4 are developing - the air cells were a ruptured MESS in the rest. They were beautifully packed, just luck of the draw when it came to postal handling.

Hoping for at least a pair out of them!

Otherwise, I'll have to buy MORE eggs!

Here they are. Only 4 months old, look at that little cockerel! I have a year-old regular Columbian roo that doesn't have type that nice (I'm giving him away, by the way, if any of you are interested - PM me for pictures). I can't wait to see what they produce with my regular Columbians!
