I'm still up, but that's because I still have babies hatching and can't sleep. I read the sticky in the hatching section and did help the one. Only I helped it with the shell, nothing else. It finished on it's own and was way to big to turn to unzip. It's doing ok, did see any blood either. Just seems really tired. Maybe I went against nature and saved it, will see I guess. I know you didn't say not to ever help, that was my attempt at being funny. Enjoy your snack!

Well my life is too complicated...
I got a text message from my

duc.gif
bleeping landlord... she wants to show the house for 2 hours on Weds...
SO now we gotta try to half way wipe down the walls, doors, appliances and other things that are grey from the soot from her stupid fuel oil furnace that doesn't have a filter on it...
Clean things up more than we want to.
We have tons of things in boxes. I have to move my snakes and tarantulas, so not to freak out the potential buyers (we have them on the lease.. but I don't want to stress them)...
AND ...
Henrietta is coughing. I don't know if its because I dipped her beak into a bowl of water this morning, Or if she came with an UR from being kept in a plastic tub in a basement by
her former owner...
AND we have to move the chicks and Henny out to the barn tomorrow.
I am going to talk to Joan's daughter to ask if I can keep them in the tack room in a large dog crate and use my heat lamp or heater in there for them.
It will only be for two days... but that could be too cold too soon for them..
GRRRR

Time to go to bed now.

Thanks for the info on the mites....The infected ones have been in quarantine since I got them and I treated the others as a precaution. I guess I'll smear them up again!

Dave... I used a heavy duty tarp for my floor and stapled it up the sides a few inches. Grant you it's only been down for 5 months but I've shoveled it out twice without scratch and rake it often. I use deep litter and it seems to be working well, and even the real heavy duty tarps are pretty cheap compared to vinyl flooring.

Carol... I sure hope things work out for you before you go into meltdown!

tiki.... nice looking birds!

MLH.... Let us know what you find out about those TSC chicks!

I know there was more I was going to say but CRS hit me again.... guess it's time for bed!

Good morning everyone,

I already bought the vinyl flooring it was a remnant so cheap, man it is cold out there, I take the dogs for their walks every morning at 4:30 and it feels like January out there.
today I have to figure out how to tip the coop over and put insulation on the floor, the walls and ceiling are done.
I have a another question. When the coop sits in the sun, it gets to be around 60 degrees, when the sun goes down it drops to whatever the outside temp is.
I have hole in the roof where the chimney was and it is covered with a rain guard. Should I add more ventilation? It isn't air tight by any means but it does hold heat in the day. In the summer I am going to have to keep a window open or I will have cooked chicken.

thanks

David

We noticed that our coop stayed at least 10-15* warmer inside compared to outside durning winter and runs were only opened on nice days, we built it this past fall so this spring and summer will be the 1st time. We insulated the walls and ceiling and have 4 vents and 2 windows that can be opened and closed as needed. DH is figuring that the coop will stay cooler inside vs outside when warm out.

Good Morning Everyone! Welcome Tiki! Nice looking birds! otonoh and TO hatch date is Apr. 17th. I'm on bator watch. Seems like very 15 minutes I'm looking at the thermometer. Even have a flashlight for when I get up in the middle of the night to pee. Following Jim's instructions and not opening it till it's time to take the turner out. Will check them then for fertility. TO do you want me to hang on to them until we make a trip in your direction? Think it would be the logical thing to do. Cind hope you get those mites killed dead! WCc at least he gave you a heads up and didn't just show up. Still a pain though. Hope you get that horse situation straightened out too. Bec hope your hatch continues to go in the right direction! Good idea on the membrane! MLH hope those chicks turn out to what you want. And Bigz SNAP OUT OF IT! Going to silicone the vanity and shower stall today. This snow has to melt! About another weeks worth of wood and then I'll be down to kindling. Enjoy the sun, warmer weather is comin!

Hey everyone Good Morning!! The sun is out and hey it's in the single digits

TSC is getting chicks later this week and I could use a few amberlinks. Maybe we can say goodbye to all this snow this week.

I hatched eggs in Jan. and the little roos are trying to crow already??? What's up with that!! Is there any swaps this weekend anywhere?? Thanks Mike

Dave- I would think that is enough ventilation. I have encasement windows facing the south (they are the wall) and a window on the east side. During the winter I leave the window on the east open a crack. If it gets to hot in there I will open it alittle more. On sunny days it warm in there, but by the time the sun sets it's outside temp again. They seem to be fine. I know alot of people put in more ventilation, but this has worked for me for 2 years and I have a very well insulated coop. During the summer I replace the wooden door with a screen door ( all materials found at the dump and DH jobs) this works well with the east window open and the west door open. Only time they are uncomfortable is when it's 90 with 90 humidity, but that can't be avoided. Here's an old pic of my coop, before it had siding on.

Well 8 are out. 2 are still in the bator because they still have their "umbilical cord" attached to them and the egg. They hatched fast and maybe to soon. They seem fine, but can't leave until they lose their baggage.

Don't see any other movement out of the remaining eggs, but will keep them in there for another day. Not a good hatch rate.

8 out of 31 orginally set. 21 went into lockdown. I dont think I'll do shipped eggs again.
