I have seen his chicks, and at 10 weeks, they are HUGE...

IF any one wants a buff or two he said he will be out of them in days...
I would call him ASAP.

You are only about 7 months away from eggs.. get those baskets ready..

I started out with 7 pullets, "just for eggs" for us. It hovers around 90 to 100 birds and can spike to 2 or 3 hundred, just like ...that.........
I do not exactly know when it got out of hand..

But, what do you think folks?? Dave has more will power than that !!! right?

Yes, congrats on the house!...... and so it begins......hehehe Oh the joys of home ownership!

Dave... 6 ha? Hope you already figured out how to expand that shack!

This is how it went with us....
Oct. 1.... signed papers on house
mid Oct. youngest son said he's moving out of the farm house he's renting..... Mom gets his 4 chickens
Oct. 23rd/ 24th.... coop gets built
Oct. 26.... I have 4 chickens
Dec. 23.... got 6 more
Jan. - Feb. Keep being told I should sell eggs.... Probably COULD sell 20 doz. a week.... not setting sights so high.
Mar 11... got 5 almost 2yr. old hens and 4 pullets.

I did have an illness and lost 1 of the original hens and I gave 1 away that turned out to be a roo. Still, I went from 0 to 17 in 5 months!

Just a little warning

BTW.... How long dose it take for the scales to get back to "normal" after treating scaly leg mites? I treated them about a week ago but they still look rough.... didn't see any mites though.

Good Morning All! Well sort of. Early to bed waay too early to rise. But put a second coat on the ceiling. I'm done painting, don't care what it looks like, I'm done painting! Was thinking this morning that I was jumping the gun on hatching otonoh. Do you want me to hold off for a June 1 hatch? Sorry I just got excited! Let me know when you would like the chicks. But I could hatch them and hold on to them until your ready. Had to laugh at all the posts about just having a few chickens, your about to find out your gonna need a bigger boat.

Have a good one!

Dr. Ha ha, Don't worry, I am getting excited too, Why don't you hatch when you can and then I will pick them up
They can go in the basement brooder and by then the coop should be done, so the can go in there until they are
completely feathered out.

I need to paint the nest boxes today and run to menards for vents and vinyl flooring

Couldn't sleep last night, my mind kept thinging up all sorts of things I want to do to the new place. So nice to finally have our own place again!

I'm thinking things can't get to out of hand, since I have rather limited space and plan on a huge garden, orchard, berry bushes, a sizable fenced portion for doggies, tons of flowers and fire pit... won't leave a lot of extra room!

Thinking 10-12 chickens, 10x12 coop w/ 6x5 storage area and part partitioned off to reduce floor space during warmer months and allow more space during winter when they spend more time in doors. Want them to be very comfortable! (And then there's a little extra room should the urge for "just one more" strike, LOL. Thinking 4 EE's for the 4 grandkids, a dominique, a BCM, a brahma, a silver laced wyandotte, a lavender ameraucana, and a blue and possibly a buff orphington so far.

Not sure how long it takes for a dozen chickens to tear up the lawn, but was thinking possibly 3 runs so I can rotate and maybe keep some green going for them, any thoughts?

Is it June yet???

Good morning! This is the earliest that I have been up in a while...lots to do today but first I had to check in with my friends!

THanks! I thought it kind of looked like the gel stuff that you feed crickets but that bright green threw me off!
Wow Hurley...NEVER have to stop hatching! Sounds like that would be pretty cool. Those units remind me of the ones the guy made who won the HM incubator contest last year...maybe he went into business? I think you are going to be hatching eggs for me

Hey Cindy--you need to put Vaseline on the legs for a good week at least EOD. Also leg mites are microscopic so you wouldnt see anything crawling! If you do, you either have REALLY good eyes or something else going on!
lau.gif
(about the eye part I mean) Mine were better in a week and they were REALLY bad looking!

So Daaa-ave...can you come over and finish my coop for me? It is still the floor and ONE wall!!! Same as the picture I showed you guys last fall!

I think the extension cord is just about out of the glacier that became my door yard...perhaps I can start working on it again soon? Those poor chickens had to live in the temporary coop all winter...I did put up storm windows however
lau.gif
You should see them....right Connie and Carol?
DrH--I hope you have better luck with your hatch than I did! I am counting on my broody now...
Jim--you never fail to crack me up in the morning! DH was not amused when I told him what I was laughing about...I guess he figured he was off the hook too!

Today I am making beans to can. I remembered to get them in to soak last night and they are in the slow cooker right now. I used to have a laurel tree for bay leaves but I dont know where it went--now HOW in the world can one lose a plant in the house? (well I guess if you saw my house...)so I had to make them without Bay leaves...maybe I will hop to the store and pick some up. The pasta I made last night is drying nicely...had to move it into the bedroom because the cats thought I made it for them. Darn cats! I might try a recipe for tortillas today. I really miss grabbing one out of the fridge, loading it up and taking off! I am thinking chicken on the grill tonight...or maybe in cornflakes...HMMM. Guess I must be getting hungry--better start with breakfast!
Have a fantastic day! Terri O

Well I have my OEGB trio potentially sold. Probably to the same person I gave a roo and hen to, he sounded familiar.

I had to explain to my 6yr old niece why most of the chickens are gone, and that her other grandma person is in the hospital.
She understands pretty well.

I may have found a good home for Dill the QH, I emailed them and if they like what they read and agree to the terms, he would be free leased.

I am babysitting today, so will see you all laters.

Dave, I have been thinking of this for a couple of days.. I know why you are putting down vinyl flooring,, I just want to remind you that chicken sh!l on that type of floor is slippery as snot on a door knob.. and the other thing, ; a slick surface like that is tough of chickens' legs..

I hesitate to tell anyone what to do.. but make sure you have deep bedding on that floor..

there, I said it.. now I feel a lot better..

OK ontonoh the bater is warming up.
wee.gif
We have 30 eggs to go in right now.
fl.gif
your fingers. Have to agree with Jim on the vinyl you don't want it slick, textured might help too. And a little vanity with a mirror.

Ceiling is PERFECT!
