Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

hello all, well, I got 14 chickens banded and moved to the big coop.. ran out of bands only have two chickens left to band.. so far the old flock has accepted the new gals without incident, xcept for one Buff hen who took an instant dislike to the only dark red new hen....

I added new bedding to the brooder chicks, that is when I found two turkey egg in the bales.. they were cracked (frozen), so Annie will use them in the kitchen.

just got "intercomed" to go up for spaghetti supper.. she intercoms,,, I just hollor "OK" LOL I guess she figures it is too undignified to hollor down the stairs.. LOL

Congrats on your new house DK!!! If I remember where you were looking correctly, we'll be almost neighbors too!!! I'm glad you got it!

So, yesterday I was at the same seminar as BCC. When my dh and I got home, we noticed to dogs looking at the incubator. Later that night, we had some rockers. This morning around 5ish I heard stomping in the incubator and went to check. We had 2 little Texas A&M quail hatch! By 9 am before we left to go to breakfast we had 5ish or so. When we got home at about 10ish or so, we had 18. We had to take them out of the incubator because they were trashing the eggs and chicks that were trying to hatch. We now have around 25 with a few more rockers. I have to say that quail pop out of the eggs really nicely. I'm not sitting on pins and needles like I do with the chickens. Here are the little dears:

Awww Must Love they are so adorable! And yes you won't be too far from me at all! Nice to know I'll have a few folks nearby who know what the heck they are doing with fowl! Now comes the hard part, figuring out what kind of chickens to get!

Cute birdies! I WISH my quail had popped out of the eggs! Not a single one hatched! I had left them in the cage (they are buttons) so maybe I picked older ones. I thought I got more of the shiny ones but maybe not. My first batch were mostly fertile--they quit on me though. I guess I will try again. It almost looks like one of my button hens is sitting on eggs right now! I have never seen her sitting down by the eggs before (or even sitting still for that matter!) Maybe she will hatch some and I wont have to?
THe last little baby didnt make it. I put him downstairs in an ice cream pail with food and water and heat. Sometime during the night the others in the room with it must have decided to see what was in the bucket and it was dead this morning

. THe lambs are doing great though; my broody hen is STUCK to those eggs! She will hardly even come off to eat. I was a little worried about that so I put food and water in her box with her so she doesnt waste away.
Our dogs got in a big fight today in the car on the way home from the dog park. DH got bit by the beagle. He kept screaming at them (yeah, like that is going to help) but the JRT had the beagle by the leg and then he reached back and WAM! His thumb looks pretty sore...I guess it is good that he is not working

SO I guess I will be doing the dishes this week too...his Dad got bit by their dogs trying to separate them during a fight and lost 6 weeks of work...ya think he would have learned NOT to stick your hand in a dog fight!!!
I made GF pasta today!!! I had some with my chili and it isnt bad, although kinda tasteless. I made linguine, little squares and fat egg noodles. At least I will be able to have lasagna, stroganoff and pasta/pesto! I think if I boil it in a seasoned broth it might be better. The best part is that the recipe used 2 dozen egg yolks! Between the noodles, my son coming home for the weekend and us having breakfast for a change, I actually have a "reasonable" amount of eggs in the refrigerator! He took 5 dozen back with him too. THey will be eating eggs and pork for a little while...his roommate won a pig and a freezer to put it in at a ducks unlimited function! Lucky kid...he won a shotgun too!
DrH--I tried to get a pic of my SLW roo today but he was camera shy. I will try again tomorrow!
DKV1--I must have missed your post about your house and the lawsuit. I went back and saw where the basement had water and your DH was going to look at others...then all of a sudden you got a house! Congratulations--I am glad you will be joining us here in WI. And PLEASE, can you bring some decent weather with you?
Well--better get on outside...sweet dreams all! Terri O

(PS) ETA: MLH--what is the green that you are feeding to the baby quail?

It is called Growgel Plus B. It is a power that you mix with water and is a vitamin rich super hydration gel. With momless quail it is a must or you loose them to starvation. The green color attracts the chicks. The other option is to place a day old chick in with them to teach them how to eat and drink. Since my chicks are not day old, I'm using the gel. It works really well. I just put it down sprinkle a little mash over it and they chow down.

Edited to add that you can purchase the gel off Eba -the company that makes it is Dawe's Laboratories out of IL. 800-323-4317

Packed up a couple dozen eggs to bring in to work tomorrow, been holding back a good number of the better ones to set this week so only a couple dozen.

Didn't get called in today (thank you), at least not yet. Got to spend the day with my boys and it was good. Sounds like Grandpa and Grandma Hurley will be coming up next weekend to visit the boys. That will be fun. I don't have a dog show, not on call, the whole weekend off. Woot woot.

The lavender Ameraucana chicks are all doing well, starting to grown nubs of feathers. Everyone else is doing well.

Nothing new to report, gotta finish some bookwork. Evening all.

TO Oh no he doesn't !!!!!... soaking his thumb in dishwater will help it heal much faster.. When Jim does the steenkin dishes, everybody does the steenkin dishes...

MLH I always said that quail come out of the egg at a dead run.
I took quail eggs to a couple of my neices schools so they could show their kids how eggs hatch.. I chose button quail because they don't take forever to incubate and it keeps the kids attention.. and after they do pip, they come out of the shell in a very short time..

I once figured out ; if you start out with a pair of quail and hatch their eggs, and then raise those chicks until they lay eggs and hatch all of them, and keep all the quail and their eggs and so forth etc etc.. at the end of a year you would have thousands of quails.. I think I figured each hen would produce 10 hens..

the 7 ducks joined the 14 chickens who joined the 6 geese,4 turkeys and 35 other chickens and (19 chicks in the brooder cage), in the main coop tonight.. with all of them and with a brooder lamp and another light it should be cozy warm in there tonight..
