Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Morning to All.... Great advice about the vinyl flooring Jim. It can cause a condition known as sprattle legs, or splay legs. One can do a search on here and find more information about it.

The scaly-leg mites should be treated every 7 to 10 days until the symptoms disappear. they recommend isolating the bird to keep it from spreading to the rest of the flock. Don't expect the raised scales to return to normal.

Same old winter blues here... Can't warm up to fast for me. BL4...Suzie would love some of your home made soap!

Jim, I plan on having deep bedding, I just wanted to make it easier to clean
Ha ha, Great, keep me posted, fingers crossed
Terri O, heck no lol, I have soo much to do, my cheap coop is getting expensive.

I just came in from outside.. I got brooder cage #2 ready for these 19 newest chicks..

I have one turkey hen that thinks I am her roost.. whenever i go outside, she flies onto my shoulder and rides around while I do my chores..

Carol, I looked at that bator.. I do like the hatching drawer idea.
but did you notice that in the write up he said that you should replace the bulb with a ceramic bulb? anyone who knows me, knows that I am not a fan of a light bulb for incubating.. it is OK for a brooder ..

and do not forget, you do have to open the big doors to transfer the eggs into the hatching drawer..

the overall pattern looks like a Dickey or Sportsman..

I would drill a separate hole to stick the electrical cords from the turners through.. If you ever would have to remove one, it would be a lot simpler than removing a window..

where would you get a ceramic bulb anyway? how much do they cost? what do they even look like? I read that they last like 10 years.. You can go through a lot of $5 heat bulbs in 10 years.
I go through about 6 per season..

Spring Break for the Oldest DD, so we went to the Fox River Mall today to do some Prom dress shopping........ can I say how much the Mall stinks? Why does every store think they need to spray their clothing with perfume????? We did a lot of window shopping at the mall, then went to Kohls to break the bank.

BigZ, no problem on the soap! I am trying to think of a way to dye it blue without resorting to using chemicals or ultramarine.... I am trying to make soap that contains all natural ingredients and dyes.

Oh yay; school is out. The kids are driving by with their souped up stereo systems that make my windows shake......

Off to figure out dinner!

Hmmm, so today I picked up some pullets for the seminar this weekend. They are Barred Rocks and Prodcution Reds. They are doing great, settling in and are very very cute little fuzzies. So, as I was looking at the Production Reds I just got from Abendroth's in Waterloo and my Porduction Reds from TSC, I had a thought. TSC lied. My TSC PR's are big, buff, with little orange stripes down their backs and they are huge. I look at them and think meat bird. The new PR's are small and red. Granted there is an age difference, but seriously! The TSC girls are huge! They don't act like meat birds though. They eat but they eat like a healthy happy chick not chow hounds. So now I'm headed over to Mt. Healthy's website to figure out what the TSC chicks are. I really hope they are just large stout PR's and not meaties.

Well I think the person I emailed about Dillon is a fruit loop and doesn't check her messages AND wants everything for the horse done, even though I stated in my email what he was due for..
AND then I stated when speaking to her that he had a reaction to a certain inter-nasal vaccine.. she was all upset because she only wanted to use that type of vaccine and only delivered that way.
sigh...
REALLY>>>????!!!
So I am going out to the barn this evening to check on everything and then check to see how things are with Joan.

Hi Tiki, very pretty chickens and roo. What breed is Buddy? I'm new to chickens and don't think I've seen pics of one like this yet.

dkv-he's a cochin. Want a couple.
Hello Tiki! Welcome. Mocha is cute! She looks really soft
Otonoh- I used a rubber membrane floor on my coop. Easy to clean up, durable, and easy on their legs. Something to think about. I use a grain shovel to scoop everything out and that works like a charm.
Jim- I don't think he's strong enough. I don't think any of us are. I started with 22 and have 20 right now. But I hatched 3 batches last year and sold them. Downsized the rooster population. And now have 5 newly hatched and more on the way, with the hopes of more come summer. I'm addicted and am not ashamed.

I have 5 out and 3 working on it. One has been working on it since last night.

I really want to help. It is the only MF that is showing any signs of hatching. Of course the color that I really want.

I keep telling myself that I'll turn Jim's tweezer on myself. Just keep staring in the holes, hoping to see it pop out.

I did not say NEVER help.. but if you are helping 5% of every hatch that is too much.. You have to draw a distinction between the chick's distress and your impatience.. just don't over assist.. If you draw any blood at all, you greatly reduce the chick's chance of survival.. and if you make it so esy for them to get out of the shell before they absorb the yolk sack , that is not a good thing either.. lots of judgement calls, eh?
