Harvest Evening All... Another great morning in the woods today. Got lucky and called in 5 hens with a mature Tom sporting a 9.5 inch beard and weighed 21.4 lbs. It was breezy and chilling and then warming. Thanks for the kind words Doc, and nothing but the best wishes for a award winning hatch. I can see the gleam in your eyes! I like the peep daddy concept...let em grow and let em go!

Congrats on the finished shiny plucker Jim! I could of used that today for the wild turkey....I decided to just skin him instead of plucking. I'll use the meat saw and cut the breast in half for two meals. The legs and thighs will make tasty soup! You love turkey don't you....

I'm really proud of you shaking your head on the bator thread! High five for it is what it is....you know you are helping folks that want to listen.

Nice pics sf and you too TO...really not that bad....wooo hooo! Glad the landlord let you go and off the hook wc!

Time to thank the Creator for a great harvest...Cheers.... ~ bigzio

FINALLY FRIDAY (my Friday, at least), woot woot!

Have been reading some, but no time for a good post this week.

Holy brrrrrrr, batman, she's nippy outside.

Think I'll build myself a 2 cage brooder/broody house this weekend for my upcoming hatch next weekend (Iowa Blues, Ameraucana, EEs, and Marans).

wry neck?
I never saw one that lived that long.. I always suspected too high temp during incubation was the cause,, usually they snap out of it in about 2 or 3 days, or die..

Wry neck is the closest "name" I can come up with? s/he hasn't been like this for 5 weeks. s/he IS 5 weeks old and 2 days ago all of a sudden there s/he was all upside downish, walking backwards? IDK whats the name for it. Please correct/help me (as you know not all the info on here is accurate
gig.gif
) somewhere I read that "wry neck" is a lack of vitamins??? and to give that baby vitamin drops? (w/o iron) someone else said to give B vitamin and E and selenium. IDK if this is accurate or not but I crushed up a B vitamin and sprinked a tiny bit in her food that I watered down and she gobbled it right down. that was yesterday, today she's eating some on her own and sometimes her head is up right, with a slight lean. and in 1 'bator during her incubation the temp was elavated however IDK if that was the 'bator she was in or not? also if that was the cause, wouldn't it have been a deformity right from day 1???

Hi all! Dinner was delish...even had desert and it was all GF!

Raimnel--I read that it was a lack of vitamins too. I think some have it right away and then some develop it later. Do a search for it and you can read all you want. Some people have gone to great lengths to save a chick like that...up to you I guess!
WiChCh--good job on getting out of that lease! Maybe you can siphon some oil out of the tank?

Great on the turkey harvest Brent! You could have done it the easy way and come over here and call to my Toms...they come right up to you! Easy shot for sure.

ODrH...bet you cant wait for those Iowa Blues! Post a pic of the 2 cage brooder house when you are done please? I need to get building over here too...thank God for that basement whelping room! It makes a fantastic brooder house too!
David you sound like you've got it BAD!!! I chuckle every time I read your posts...I think your girls are going to be living in a much better house that I do! (that is not hard to do) I think you should let them live here and I will come and live in your coop--Okay?
Good luck on that hatch DrH! I am rootin' for those babies.
Jim you just keep reading with the duct tape over your mouth (and your fingers taped together too!)

I never understood the different temp with a fan either. After all, it is "still air" under the chicken at 99.5! And when she gets up it gets cooler. They must have measured it at some point to find out the optimal temp. Anyhow, I dont think I will be hatching too many more inside...my hens are going broody one after the other! I have 4 sitting tight right now and if they have the 95%+ hatch rate I am expecting I will have another 50 chicks running around here!!!

 Yep--not hatching any more....This weekend I am going to try and get my pens together...I am going to need a place for them to sleep!
SF you amaze me with all that genetics stuff! I think it is fascinating.
DA--great job on the seeds...I cannot wait until I can plant. I wish I had had time to at least get the spinach, beets and radishes in when it was nice...oh well, maybe next week!
Sorry about those migraines girls! I have only ever had 2 in my life and I thought I was going to die...no thanks--no more for me!
Well I am going to say good night...my eyelids are heavy and I have to cook at The Pines again tomorrow...*sigh* Then Saturday at the horse fair...maybe I will just sleep Sunday away....Sweet Dreams everyone! Terri O

Howdy All!! I've been reading and catching up but to tired to post! Raimnel, I hope that your head feels better. Dk1-my migraine's are just like yours-complete with squiggly "C" and funky lights. Then, if luck is not on my side it turns into the "curl up and kill die" kind. Once I moved out of CA, my migraines occured less less and they are no longer so painful. I have to be carefull with caffine, but I have to really watch what I eat. Certain spices and if I eat something with cheese, I can't have chocolate for a few hours or I get an instant migraine of epic porportions. Barometric changes can also cause me to get them.

Ok, so the peep update:

The hatches are done. I tossed the last egg today. My Dominique eggs are not Dominiques! They are Barnyard Specials, but I really cant complaine since the eggs were $1 for a dozen. Out of the 12, I hatched 5. Two looks like Ameraucana's, maybe a dominique or a bardie-possible silkie cross and two that are white is buff balls. One had a few black spots and the other one has a black spot and blue eyes. Very intersting. Very healthy and happy!
Out of the 12 bantam RIR's and BR's I had one infertile and 2 early quitters, and one just did not hatch. I did an egg- octomy and I think it drowned when it got kicked around. I ended up with 5 RIR's and 3 BR's. Not bad for $4 bucks for a dozen! Very cute.

Well, I made a huge brooder to start co-mingleing (sp) babies and we had a casualty. Actually we had to do one in. I put the Fly Boys with the Production Reds and some Orloffs. One pf the TSC chicks-Red Bill- who was more then likely an bantam OEGB, was freakishly mean. I took him out and told dh that we had a problem. Dh was like not Red Bill!! I told him that he was being a total punk to the Orloffs and thatI was afraid he'd eventually get blood then we'd have a real problem. We tried again and he just went after the other chicks-he was such a punk! So after my dh witnessed this issue we elected to "do him in". We agreed that we did not want a mean bantam rooster and not did we want to pawn off a mean roo to someone else. After we took him away the other chicks were very happy and the drama was gone.

I move the Barnevelders and some Orloffs into the fish tank brooder to get them tamed down a little. Meal worms work really well and some Orloffs already know what the container looks like and have figured out that hands bring yummy stuff. This is only Day One of the Great Chicken Taming Adventure of 2011. Wayyyyyyy to much fun!!!
ya.gif

Oh yes, just when I was happy clean and to put the bators away for the year, my dh comes home all proud with 6 ringnecked pheasant eggs to try to hatch. Yeah. Go me.
So, I cleaned the Retipro and am getting all humidified and will place the egg tomorrow morining. So, once I place them, in 24 days I may have baby pheasants. Yeah... Go me....

But in the mean time here is a pic of the new babie:
