Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Good Morning Everyone! WOW otonoh that coop turned out beautiful! But don't see how you'll be able to add on to it.

I wouldn't judge the chicks by their actions just yet, you'll know at around 4 months. Have to agree on the ugly stage!

Jim can't imagine your feed bill.

barlracer good to hear from you! Glad your hatching efforts are paying off! About the only things I'm not planting today are beans and cukes, I'm sooo cited!

To all you mothers out there Happy Mothers Day!

Anybody heard of the Raptor Rescue Center in Antigo? I guess their always in need of fish for the eagles and the pelican/s there, so during the non-working part of my summer, I intend to do a lot of "volunteer" work.

How many dumb questions am I limited to, cuz I am going to have a lot of them?

Starting on my first built at home coop to replace the one I bought by Ware from Petco. Still have not received the replacement parts for damaged pieces. I told them I want a 50% refund. We will see. Dumb question, the coop is going to be 4x6 with a shed style roof on 22" legs. Two windows in the front, vent on each side, and a vent across the top in the back that can be closed. The nest box will be on the left side with a narrow man door (which I am not;)) and the bottom of the front will lift up to sweep out. I willadd a hoop style run about 5x10 after that...... Here is the question, you know that it snows in wisconsin, right? The snow is quite likely to pile up on the hoop run and around the sides, maybe inside the run. What then, do they still try to go out into the run, do I need to crawl in and scoop out the snow, do I over the whole thing with a tarp and let it get buried in the snow like an igloo? If they have food and water, do you still go out each day to getthe eggs or will the eggs freeze with an external nest box? My wife is worrying about the poor chickens in the freezing winter. She said she gets sad about deer and turkeys in the storms and cold. She wants to know if we can send them south in the winter....

Happy Mothers Day!

David, I love your coop! Don't know why but I love that "ugly" stage the chickens go through, think they are so cute.

Sometimes when I read these posts I am stunned by the number of fowl people on here have, and more than a little envious!

Nice to see the weather is finally cooperating for the gardeners.

Carol, hope the headache didn't last long.

Donner, there's no limit on questions (wouldn't classify any as "dumb", we dont' know what we don't know and the only way to learn is to ask). Having said that I will admit I don't know (I've yet to get chickens) and will be watching for an answer as well.

Got my paperwork from Dr to go to lab and get blood drawn to check for LYME disease. Ticks me off, one dose of dozasomething could have taken care of this! Cost me $369.00 when in the hosptial to see the infectious disease Md for 5 minutes, who refused to give me the meds because he refuses to give the meds unless evidence is found, which meant a 4-6 week wait. I'll bet it's more like he wants the $75.00 for an office visit ... Doctors! Why do veternarians listen better than people doctors???? Wish my vet could treat me, I trust him a lot more than any MD I've ever met!

Well off to scrub the kitchen and baths and clean the house and see what else I can find to pack up that isn't necessary! Have a great day everyone!

, ususally our girls don't get into a really big fight, there is some pecking and such that goes on- we haven't had to separate any of the hens- they ususally are to busy getting as many treats as they can! Now the boys on the other hand don't care about the treats and will go at it- DH and I have had to step in and pick one or two up to stop it and if that didn't work we removed which ever one needed to be separated. We don't let the kids go in if the boys are fighting for their safety of course but my DD is always ready to jump in and help!

Happy Mother's Day to all who fill that role! Looks like it will be beautiful today so enjoy!

Moved the turkeys outside yesterday and they seem to be liking their new digs!

good morning all, Happy Mothers' Day to all that it applies to.
Single parents included..

I got up too late to do any decent fox hunting.. but I drank my coffee just the same..

at least a half dozen americauna chicks in the hatcher..

Dooner, "a narrow man door,, (which I am not)" ?? does that mean "man" or "narrow" ?? I think I know.. LOL

dkvart1 You think You are stunned by the numbers of fowl some of us have.. How do you think we feel when we realize it all of a sudden ?? LOL It struck me ironic how Lymes disease "ticks" you off..

Dooner. you probably won't be using the run much in the snowey months.. and yes, you will have to collect eggs a few times a day to keep them from freezing and cracking.. You will soon get into the rythme of what time each chicken lays her egg..

when you build our nests.. make at least one end so that it can be opened for easy cleaning.. I put both ends of mine on hinges.
the ends flop down and I can just rake everything out, either direction..

I am a "not narrow" man

It is funny what you said about the rythym of the eggs, it was the first thing I noticed, two lay around an hour after sunrise and the other around two hours later. So basically, in the winter they spend most of their time inside the coop?

Jim, what do you charge for your keets???? I am trying to talk my mom-in-law into getting some keets so they eliminate the tick population. I keep telling her they are pretty self-sufficent and will leav pretty much everything alone (after doing some digging I found that they like to peck tomatoes and pumpkins...) I have a friend who's parents have keets and they want $10 each for the juvies.....

Anything else about keeping keets that you could share?

Any advice is much appreciated..... (like keeping them quiet.....

Dooner I'm getting "less narrow" in one spot if it helps ya any. Don't know how far you want to go with your run but when I built mine I made the doorway big enough to get the wheelbarrow in for snow removal which didn't happen as often as it should have this winter for some reason. That might explain the less narrow in one spot thing. Ya that's it. Think you might regret making a quanset type shelter unless it's light enough to just pick it up and move it for snow removal. Snow in Wi.? When was that? Oh ya last week.

You know the old saying there are no stupid questions, just stupid answers! And I got a million of em. Ah Cha Cha Cha! Jim had to laugh when dk wrote "the number of fowl people on here" then reread it, wasn't as funny the second time. fowl, foul, fooel? Ms.F I took a Barred owl up there one time that had hit my DD's car and met the founder. Can't remember her name but she is one special lady! Wish I was closer because I would definitely volunteer there! She gave me the full tour, it was to use a word that I hate AWSOME! If anyone wants to do a road trip that is a must see facility! It will melt your heart and give you hope! The garden is IN!

except for the cukes and beans. I'm a happy camper! Wish I was closer to Bigz to give him a hand. I know he's gotta be pacing right about now.
