Oh Hurley, I am so sorry that happened to your burgeoning flock. WOW!

I still have that one Iowa blue for you here, supposed to be a guaranteed pullet. Purchased by a local artist who went in on a chick order from a hatchery in TX.
Well I am off to go get tow dolly for my car... should be fun to try to get it off by myself....bleh!

have found a coop. There is a free playhouse on the CL in Madison, I emailed on it and hope to get a response.
They posted it late at night so I hope I get it.
have a great day all!

Yes Dr. H the Hummers are here, and so are the orioles. I had a male hummer fly over my head last night while visiting my in-laws in Amherst, so you should have them by you.

Off to take the squirrels to a rehabber!

Enjoy the sun while it shines!

Thanks bl4 I thought they should be, normaly they come looking for their feeder but haven't noticed them. Will get that up today. Poor Peatwo is pacing around the run where Btwo is being held captive. Then the rest come over to ask what she did to deserve the punishment.

I told them that it was because she is much more sexier than all of you ugly chickens. Then I ran away. Of course the tramatic ordeal got Buster worked up and he went after me all the way to the house. Was thinking it might be a good week for a batch of Buster noodle soup. Just hate to take away the girls protector. Ya that's it. L and I were talking last night. We figured out that we get a heck of a lot of good food for a very small investment with the garden. So much better and cheaper than store bought. And besides I still like playing in the dirt.

Good morning all!

Hurley, so sorry you lost chicks. I avoid coated pans like the plague. Back in the 70's my dad made me read an article written by the guy who developed teflon and he wouldn't allow it in his house... apparently anything other than very low heat releases the toxins. Wonder how much of the many illnessess we face today are brought on by our cookware?

DrH I'm with you, I love playing in the dirt and it is a small investment with a big payoff. Does anyone on here use heirloom seeds? I'm gonna have to locate a source of heirlooms for my garden next year. Don't think I'll have time to get everything I need to done for this year, but will start preparing the beds for next year.

DH told me not the job hunt until at least mid-July so I can have time to work on things at the new place, bless his heart! That'll give me time to work on building a coop and run and a play house for the grand kids! Was only going to go to work part time, but think I may want to work through the winter full time. Trying to convince him to buy the 1/2 acre lot that adjoins ours, but they want 30,000.00 for it. The subdivision probably hasn't seen a new house built in at least 20+ years, and there a lots of empty lots. Maybe mid winter, when things are really slow they'll be a bit more reasonable! Would love to have the extra room for an orchard and berries and of course a bigger garden... and more room for chickens. Figure if I work full time for awhile DH will be more willing to spend the $$.

Have a great day all.

Amyable,, I set you the photos of the nests.. I forgot to mention that all the pieces for it can be cut from 1/2 sheet of 3/4 inch thick plywood.. except for the 6 lower doors.. they are 5"x14" boards..

another turkey hatched while I was sending you the pictures..
#10 and #11 are in the hatcher..

Good morning to all! Happy belated Mother's Day to all the Mom's out there too! (Yes MLH--I DID spend my day working on my coop! I really only had to get the run tacked up 'cause I finished it late Saturday night. Got the run (such as it is) up and moved the biggest of the birds out there yesterday afternoon. Only two had the gumption to come out and check out the ground...the gold gene cuckoo from Hurley and the Wheaten Ameracauna Roo from H&R! Actually I pulled the Wheaten out...so as soon as I am done with my favorite breakfast (popcorn and coffee) I am heading out to open their door to a "new life." They probably wont come out today either...

ya work so hard....then they are, well, CHICKEN!

Hurley--I am sooo sorry to hear of your tragedy! I HATE Teflon pans...I allow one for cooking eggs only. I had the same thing happen 7 years ago when my ddthen12 boiled a pot dry making Ramen noodle soup. Lost my canary, parakeet, cockatiel and Senegal parrot we had had for 20 years! All pots went to St Vinnies immediately! I still wonder about coated bakeware...I switched to glass but some pans (like round cake pans) still are coated....they say they have to be superheated to let off fumes; but that is the manufacturer talking!

to you girl...you can rebuild; and just think how much healthier your family will be without those nasty pans!

I am jealous that you have your garden in DrH! Mine is still in it's disarray of winter mess! The coop was taking precedence here...yesterday I did finish getting the salad greens in in the raised bed. Several types of Mesclun and mustard, onions and something called "corn salad." Anybody ever have it? It says spoon shaped leaves with a nutty flavor. 21 to 40 days! Cant wait for fresh lettuce that actually tastes like something! I am reading a book right now, Barbara Kingsolver's Animal, Vegetable, Miracle About her and her family's move to eating only food grown by them or in their area for a whole year. So far it is very interesting! She writes the main part with pieces by her DD17 and husband. Her youngest is only 8 so cant be included but she is in charge of the chickens! I am up to May in the book and they are doing a lot of the same things that we all are working on!

OK--better get out to the coops (whoo hoo--I have TWO now) and let out the feathered ones. Funny that David and I finished our coops on the same day...well, his looks way better...but I bet I didnt spend as much!

Have a fantastic day! Terri O

(ps) BL4--we did squirrels one year. Darn things got pretty mean when it was feeding time! We took them camping with us and released them in the park. Figured they would have a good chance of survival near campers....they came back to the cage for two nights but on the third they were gone!

TO if you'd quit layin around the house all day eatin popcorn and drinkin coffee maybe you'd find time to get your garden in.

I wish I had half your energy and ambition! Was thinkin the other day [it happens] that this homegrown food thing has really changed our lives. Can't stand to eat out, everything is too salty and the veggies, meat, and eggs from the store SUCK! Seems like every year my thoughts turn more towards better food. With all the food recalls out there think it's a good thing! The wheels are already turnin, the garden WILL be twice it's size next year. Pretty soon I can sell the lawn mower. Been having bad thoughts about some pigs too. The cilantro is in as well as the wood and it's raining. Got it all done just in time. Think it's time for a nutrious and delishious lunch, throw a log in and take a nap.

OK-. Funny that David and I finished our coops on the same day...well, his looks way better...but I bet I didnt spend as much! hugs
Have a fantastic day! Terri O

Terri, I am sure, I save all of the receipts but afraid to total it. We if nothing else, I can use it for a shed if I decide chickens aren't for me. I would love to see you coop
I need to figure out how to set up an extended run that is covered since we have a lot of hawks around here, I hate for them to just be in the little 5'x9' run. It is thundering here and raining.

Dr. Ha, Good luck on the garden, I am afraid to start mine, We ALWAYS get frost up to memorial day in Wausau. I can wait.

David

Afternoon all!!
Hurley-I am so sorry about the loss of those babies. Hugs to you.

Terri- I told my dh that yes you did work on your coop yesterday and he said " so your not the only weird-o"!

I need new pots and pans but I want to use American made products so I found some that are cast iron. I bought two new skillets since I needed to replace those. I use stoneware to bake in. I love it!! I have a stone cookie sheet and two round stone cake pans and will get some stone muffin pans next. They are so nice to bake in and beyond easy to season and cleaning is a piece of well....cake!! LOL!!

We got the chicken coop panels all put together but am waiting for the rain to stop. Mean while I think I'll go set some planters for my container garden. I got one of my upside down planters done but I need to do a few more. I'm going to try peppers in one this year and I think maybe a pole bean too. Should be fun to see how a bean plant does in one!
Who was looking for Heirloom seeds? I have loads since that is the majority of what I plant. What do you need? I might have it. Also you can check this site out. It's where I get alot of mine to start with.

Cheers!
