well, let me correct myself.. that empty shell was not turkey #13
it is a chicken.. AND there are at least 5 pips, AND there are 2 chicks in another tray.. looks like everything is a go..

I just saved a Barn Swallow after it flew into the new house.. I don't have all the screens up yet so had the front and back storm doors open...
It flew into the window right behind me, and kinda got a little stunned so I gently scooped it up with a lap rug and took it to the front door and let it go.
I improvised and got old screen tops from my empty reptile aquariums and now have the front door closed but have a screen top in where the screen should go.

Have a great day all!

Good morning all! DrH, your "special"day! Happy day to you! What are ya now??? 29 AGAIN?

You comment about beer and cake for all reminded me of Saturday when I was out putting up fence; I looked behind me and Rusty, my big Cuckoo Marans, was sipping out of my brandy/coke! Man I sure wish I could have gotten a pic of that.
Good luck Kee on the ordinance thing! I hope Dooner can get there for more support of the cause. THanks for that idea about hops! They do indeed grow really fast--in one summer the varieties I have totally covered my outhouse! I think I will move some of the vines and have them climb on the lattice by my coop too!

Whoo hoo for Jim's successful hatch! They really ARE tough little buggers! On those boxes it would be great if you can do a cutting diagram Jim! If not I can follow directions pretty well too....I have a table saw that is in pieces in the garage. Think I mentioned that once before...sure wish DH would get it put together! I was hoping that I could cut the pieces with my circular saw? I am getting real good at doing straight lines! Those 15* angles were tough! I even know how to use my speed square now! Good thing I was pretty good in geometry though...I had to check everything with a picture I drew!

Sweet Folly--how late do you stay up? My dd25 is road tripping to MN cities for the week and will be passing through near you on Thursday night...thinking about snagging at least one boy for Penelope that quail and maybe some friends too...I will PM you.

Gotta run to "be the waitress" at the retirement center...I HATE it! Guess what? I do believe that I am going to quit that part of the job! Hell--How I feel this morning I just want to stay home from any job. I get like this every summer...just want to work in the garden and in the yard...

(PS) Thanks to good friend Carol...she keeps her eyes open for stuff that everyone is looking for...I am hoping to make a deal on a Russian Tortoise to install in Stuart and Monty's Garden...wish me luck and have a fantastic day!

Thanks for all the wishes! But just another day to me. Had to come back in to make more hats. I forgot to make some for B and Peatwo. Some like em some don't quess I know who'll get the pieces of cake with the most iceing. Really glad to hear that most are surviving Jim! bl4 like that's ever stopped me before.

Happy Birthday DrH..

I have a ? about Cortinux (sp) quail ????

I know basically nothing about them.. there are two ads on C-list for hatching eggs.. I want to hatch some for eating.. and maybe if I like them I will keep a couple of egg layers and a rooster..

Now for the barrage of questions..

How old do they have to be to lay eggs?
what is the incubation time for eggs?
about how much does a full grown one weigh?

I have had button quail before, ..

I also would like to raise some hops.. do you plant seeds or plants? is there anything special I would have to do to row some? I do make home made beer once in awhile.. RED ROBBIN !!!! Yummmmmmm....

7 Uko Kei eggs to set ,, Glad I didn't set them yesterday.. See? procrastination has it's merits.. 15 guinea eggs , too, plus whatever we collect today.. This afternoon Marlene is bringing me a bunch of guinea eggs also..
she said 3 dozen.. I will have to modify another egg holder so that I can stack them..

A bit off topic, but i have reading the gardening posts and decided that since i have to rototill the area for the new run to loosen up the dirt that i have to remove in order to put down sand or gravel, i may as well rototill the area the run has been placed and plant a very small garden, let us say 8x12. I know nothing. Should i mix in something when i till it? I am not going fancy, just four posts and cheap wire to maybe keep out some nrabbits and deer. How many inches of sand or pea gravel dur i pit in the run and should i put down chicken wire or plastic first?

You may want to leave the new run clear of gravel or sand, so that you can till inside the run every couple of weeks or so to mix in all of the poop. If it becomes an issue you can just fill it in some more.

As far as the old run site, I would just add more chicken poop and compost when you till, then let it rest for a few days/a week before planting.
