Just wanted to post a hello to my fellow Wisconsinites. We are soon-to-be urban chicken raisers. Not sure our hatching rate will be that great our first time around... so have to ask, where do y'all get your hatching eggs from? Thanks, and try to enjoy the dreary day.

Well I have some good news... WOnDerFul NEWS actually... (no I am NOT preggers)

DH got the trainer position he interviewed for!!

He would have known last week, if HR hadn't NOT forwarded the 4th applicants info so they could be interviewed.. (they have to have 4 interviews for whatever reason).

Bad news... with the budget and cuts to pay for healthcare and retirement for state workers.. I may have to go OFF of his healthcare and go onto VA.
Just got off the phone with them and they are sending me a means test, to see if we qualify.

I am getting a little tired of saying "MACK!" every other word with the chihuahua... Bentley the scotty got into the stinging nettle and now is scratching himself raw behind both front legs.
SO he has some benedryl in his system and hydro-cortisone on his itchy parts, and he is wearing one of my dogs coat to keep him from scratching himself.
I have been keeping Mack on a leash to keep him from having boy urges on Bentley....Sigh!!
TO called me on my way back from the Amish Dent n Bent, she is funny!! and NO I cannot be pregnant...
I know for SURE I am not... and I can't have kids so that is another way of knowing !! LOL

blaeh rain!!...
I have my veggies planted but my flowers ... NONE!!!

AND!! I scored a nice find!!.

I am picking it up tomorrow!
A used incubator and thermostat for 25 dollars. no turner, I may spend the money for one.. or just turn them by hand...

Now a question.. I stuck two call/mallard duck eggs under the bantam cochin.. I know they take longer than chicken eggs...
I believe the chicks are due next week... Should I get the incubator cleaned and fired up to finish off the duck eggs? and how long will that take?

The guinea was off the nest so I went and had a look--tossed one and there is a pip! Yeah...he/she was working on it then I hear the mama coming back so I left it alone! Seemed pretty dry--I hope she went in the water to provide more humidity...guess she probably knows what to do!

Jim...bummer on the piston! Guess you were working it too hard...maybe we can get a 2 for 1 deal at my mechanic on engine rebuild? He says that my engine (Tecumseh) is no longer made so he cant get the right sized rings for it...he is going to put in some but we will probably have some blow by--dh says we are going to use it that way this year and buy a new engine for it next year. (oh brother--talk about wasting $$!) TIckes me off!

OK gotta go and hang sheets out--I hope they dry! I was really wishing I had my camera on me this morning. The young pigeons were all laying down in the same direction side by side--looked really weird!

I think your mech is rationing out some BS.. parts for small engines are pretty interchangeable and easy to get..

You can turn the eggs by sticking a 2x4 or a brick or a book under one side of the bator to tilt it.. then at the required intervals, switch the brick to the other side.. you will not lose any heat or hum% doing it that way.. add water as needed through the vent hole with a piece of tubing taped to a small funnel.. I also use duct tape to seal the lid to the base.. there is a lot of air leakage with LG and Hova in that area..

I can tell you where I DON'T get eggs, and that is through the mail.. I sometimes drive 90 miles one way to pick up 10 dozen eggs or more.. Most of my eggs come from my own birds , and a lot of them come from nearby chicken nuts..

just put out your egg needs here on the cheeseheads and somebody close by should have what you need,, or know where you can find some..

let us know where you live .. there should be one of us close by

Mallards take 28 days, calls 26-28. Muscovy's take longer.

Early Evening All...we managed to get some light rain here today

I'm not sure how much exactly, but prolly 1/4 to 1/3 inch. Hope that gets things up that didn't sprout well like usual.

Welcome to the new cheeseheads....try to make the bash if you can. Prolly a good time to learn chicken math, for sure!

The guys were gonna try to have a work day at camp today...called it a rain day instead. We will have to try again. We are limited to week days that camp isn't being used.

Stopped at Aldi's in GB yesterday...nice big watermellon for 2.99. It's back-up to the half in the fridge yet. That stuff sure is goody!

Sorry to hear that the tiller died Jim. Sometimes a guy can find them at yard sales fairly cheap, compared to new.

To all the new Cheseheads. So many nice people here. Yes we all get "the look" from non chicken people when we start to talk about them.
Wow mega gardens going in, can't wait to see what comes up for us. The Deer are out there every night so we will see what we (don't get) I asked for a fence but DH said no. Maybe after all his work gets eaten by others he will change his mind

WCC I'm a bit queezy lately too and not a chance in hell that I'm PG either.

DrH, Don't you just love to see the kids excited about a new place and all the changes they want to make? Until they ask for help

Tell them you'll talk them through it

Rainy day here so didn't have to water and that's good for those who have all the planting done.
