Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Ditto on that!

Hurley, beautiful birds and very nice photography.

Amyable, too funny about the eggs. He is such a sweetheart! I forgot to give you back your quart jar. Oops.

Glad I got some Benadryl in my dog 'cause the fireworks are starting already. Time to crank some music too. Poor guy.

Evening all!

Hey Hurley! good to see you again!

Those are sure some pretty birds you have there!

Shanti-love the "play date" pic!!

GothChick-good to hear from you again! Congrats on the little baby boy that you will have!

Cind-glad to hear that Duke is a little better.

H&R- I picked up the Ball Blue Book of Canning (preserving?) Was that the book you mentioned?

Ok my Cheesehead peeps! I need your help! I'm looking for a wife/girlfriend for Winston. He is a bantam BB Red (Black Breasted Red) OEG. But here's the kicker! He is tiny! I mean tiny! Like 6 ounces tiny! I'm looking for a hen and breed and color do not matter. I was thinking of maybe a small to runty Silkie, a tiny Serama, or I was also thinking about a Nankin possibly but I've only met one-who was a rooster. So if anyone has (or know of anyone that has) a small hen that might fit the bill and they either don't need, don't want, wants to get rid of, or just feels sorry for Winston, please PM me. She will have a great home, be totally spoiled and will have a very sweet rooster hubby/boyfriend. If it helps, I can take his pic and post it so you can see him in all of his tiny glory. Southern and Central Wisconsin are definately not a problem as far as traveling goes. Thanks for your help!

It was a nice day here today. The garden got watered and weeded some. I'm so far behind in weeding! At least most of the veggies are no longer weed choked!
Dh and I went to look at cherry trees today to see if we can replace the one that died. I did not get one but I did get two peach trees! The two I got earlier via a mail order nursery, died. The nursery I went to today had their fruit trees on sale 25% off and came with a three year guarantee. They are great looking trees just as tall as the apples I planted last year. The only draw back is that they are hybrids and not heirlooms, but I can always add more trees! I got a Red Haven Peach and a Polly Peach. Dh ordered another American Hazel Nut since my other ones died and I accidentally ran one over with the lawn mower.

The little Barred Rock is atill with us and she seems a little bit better. We will see how she does....

I gave Sax some Quiet Moments herbal calming tablets tonight to see if those help with the firework anxiety he has.

So lets all cross our fingers that it helps!!

Have a great night everyone and a nice Independence Day tomorrow!!

Don't know that she needs to be THAT tiny. My little banty lavender ameraucana chases down the LF right now, grabs a beak full of feathers and holds on...actually he reminds me of a feathered bull rider when the girls aren't interested in his advances. LOL

Good evening all! I am having some long awaited dinner! MMMMM! SO, I got the chickens caught up today for the Pullorum tester tomorrow. I hope all goes well. I hope I have the right classes in the cages. There are a few I am not sure of....Carol is bringing me some hens for the clean legged variety of bantams...remember mine got eaten by the owl? The only other bantam I have is a D'uccle...definitely NOT clean legged!

OK--greatpics ODrH! I am off to finish dinner and lock up...good night all! Terri O

evening, I had some comments but I forgot them already..

I spent a lot of time in the garden today.. HOT out there in the sun.. I got the potatoes all hilled.. Planted 16 plants that my DD dropped off last night.. tilled up a spot for some more squash and cukes..

had another peachick hatch.. did pretty well for awhile, but seems too weak to stand up.. I think he is going to die also..

this batch is about finished hatching.. have one more batch due on the 9th.. hope they do better than these did..

that is the book I have and find that it is a nice ref to have. Got our cherry jam made and dehydrater running and the kids made cupcakes and cookies- we still have to frost the cupcakes, made potato salad as well for tomorrow. Letting the kids do some poppers and sparkles and have a few ground fireworks but wasn't able to find some fountains(didn't look to hard either). Our neighbors dog gets all upset when he hears fireworks or gunshots- we try hard to do it where he can't hear it so that he doesn't get upset- our old dog Hobbes was like that so we had been through it for years and we found that benydral worked to help make things a bit better for him
sad.png
saddly we had to say goodbye to him last summer.

Not planning to do much tomorrow probably grill out and hang out with the kids at the house and let them finish off the poppers.

Carol glad to hear that you are feeling better today, good luck Terry O at the fair, nice pictures to all who shared

, Jim sorry to hear about the peafowl hatch that is sad, we feed our birds 20% and that seems to work good for us but we get just as many if not more boys than girls- go figure

Hi to everyone else

FT, this is the fish oil I take:
http://www.vitacost.com/Coromega-Omega-3-Fish-Oil-Supplement

It is WONDERFUL! NO FISH BURPS! I had to take fish oil when I was preggo with #4 and Ihated it; I would take it when I went to bed so I did not have to taste that tuna fish taste all day long with burps....

We saw the Ultralight go by on the back of a wrecker....... no word on the condition of the pilot of course...... I hope everyone made it.

Fireworks are ramping up over here; I am enjoying my time here at the house BY MYSELF! I can do whatever I want to do!!!!!

A big Happy Birthday to my favorite and most wonderful dog in the whole world, Trixie. She is 11 years old today, and she is a Boxer/Black Lab cross (both parents were purebreds). I would love to make her a breed of dog; she has all the best characteristics of both breeds, she loves to swim, she is an excellent watchdog (people think she is a pitbull), and she would have been a terrific hunting dog. She has the short coat of the Boxer as well (less shedding).

Here is one of my favorite pictures of her; she is with her best bud Fonzie running on the logging trails on my in-laws property.

Amyable, cute story about your 4 year-old pulling all the eggs! I love hearing those stories. That's such a precious age and when they try so hard to "help" it's hard to be mad!

Love all the pictures! I can't remember who posted what but I really enjoy looking at the birds and different setups. Thanks for sharing everyone! Oh my, that coloring on the Sicilian one is to die for!! Just beautiful!

Yippee!!! I rehomed both my young roosters today to a farmette by Windsor. I was so happy I actually delivered them! Hooray for Craigslist! Funny thing, I posted them as "Young roosters" in the farm & garden section several days ago and got no bites. Today I listed them as "Free young roosters" in the Free category and had 3 requests within 5 minutes of uploading it! Huge load off my mind! Oh, btw, I did check with the Dane Co. Humane Society to find out what the surrender fee was and it was $20 for EACH bird! WOW! I mean I can kinda understand since they would have to feed them indefinitely and there probably isn't a high demand for roosters, but $20 just didn't feel right.... I enjoyed my little jaunt out to the country and unloading those buggers for nothing other than my time & gas & making one farmer really happy, what's not to like?

Question: my little bantam frizzle is the only bantam I have. Is she more likely to be constantly picked on given her size? Should I try to get another bantam hen to keep her company? (Anyone have any bantam hens hatched in May so they'd be of similar age & size? I have a white silkie hen born at the end of March that I could trade if need be.) I have 2 young silkies and my frizzle to introduce to the "flock" at some point and I'll introduce them all at the same time as I read it's better to introduce multiple birds than just 1 at a time, but I'm wondering if the little one is going to get the short end of the stick all the time. I'd appreciate any insight you may have.

My baby ducks are gorgeous and growing like weeds! I've been trying to get an updated picture but the mom keeps hiding them. Man, she's one good protective (read mean) momma! I was leaving a gallon bucket of water for her and a much lower container for the little ones and THREE times when I've gone to check on them there was one or two ducklings in the big bucket unable to get out. Thankfully I found them before they drowned but man, trying to get a stick in there to tip the bucket over while holding the door close to closed with the mom flying at me. Wow! She sure knows how to get my blood racing! Anyone know how long they stay this protective? I mean, it's good, but how long do I need to be on high alert when I'm around them.

I picked a bunch of sour cherries yesterday & got them pitted and made a delicious cherry crumble, YUM! I have lemon-cherry granita forming ice crystals in the freezer, will make a cherry compote tomorrow (cherries, sugar and balsamic vinegar) and will finish off what I picked by making cherry butter in the crock pot. I'm pretty excited! The first & only time I picked sour cherries was 2 years ago and all I made was some cherry vodka, but I never sweetened it so it never got drank - just sitting there!

Well, I've chatted enough. If you have any ideas on how my little frizzle bantam will be accepted by the big girls, I'd appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks and have a peaceful evening (not likely with all the noisemakers out!)
Elaine

Happy Birthday Trixie!

Wow! You chatterboxes! I love all the pics! FT, you must tell ET that I absolutely love his handiwork. His greenhouse is especially impressive! And all the critters are so adorable. Thank you all for sharing! DrH especially loves looking at the pictures, right Doc?

Way, way, way too much to even attempt to comment on, & I'm tired & have a pounding headache so I'll make it short & sweet. Or at least attempt to.
big_smile.png
Every neighbor & his uncle seems to be shooting off noisemakers tonight, so that isn't helping much either. Oh, and I'm tired partially because I was rudely awoken this morning by the sound of a hot air balloon cranking on the gas above my house. And I mean "knock the chimney off the roof" above my house. If they would have screwed up my brand new, not a few weeks old roof........
rant.gif
These same jokers come & try to land in our yard every few years. You think the last few times they bounced off our trees, they'd get the hint that this area is no longer an empty farm field & replot their course. But nooooo............ And then they damage our trees, scrape up the grass when their stupid gondola drags along our yard and then want to drive their huge trucks all across our property to load up the whole flying circus. And then what do they do? Try to offer us a bottle of cheap champagne as I don't know what. A peace offering? An apology? Well, I can't tell you what I was going to tell them what I was going to do with that champagne, but DH quickly went outside & ushered them off to a safe distance to "chat", leaving me to fume in the house.
somad.gif
At least this time, they actually kinda cleared the trees & drifted out of our yard & became someone elses problem. Not the best way to start out a long day.

At least the day at the SIL's house was pleasant & uneventful. And when I say uneventful, that is a good thing. DH's mom is a little on the, how shall I say, emotional side? And BIL's family is very outspoken and opininated, but at least BIL's one instigator bro & his colorful little family were absent. Whew! So it was a very nice day with some beautiful weather & lots of great food, and DH took his one older niece for her first bike ride. She absolutely loved it.

So sad to hear about the ultralight pilot. Hope they are not seriously injured.

I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable/productive weekend so far. I hope all your animals aren't too stressed by all the noise going on. And have a great Independence Day!

Oh! MLH, my sis has some Belgian Anthwerp bantams she received from McMurrey, and they are small chickens. Really small! So that might be a breed to look into for your roo? But I also agree with Hurley. I have a small banty roo who is in with all standard hens & he has never had any problems with them. Those crazy gals would even squat down for him. And I've seen the bucking bronco maneuver more than once too!

Duke seems to be holding his own.

Love the pics

Bought a (not terribly well made) chicken tractor for $40 off CL. Cheap enough I can fix it up. Problem is I have more uses for it than tractors!

Not saying much tonight... I hurt my left hand/wrist a few days ago. Thought it was just a bruise but it's gotten allot worse! Typing w/1 hand. Pain Pain Pain!
rant.gif
Have it a brace, may need to see the doc.
