Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Evening all!

Kristi- my vote is rooster. Looking at the all the pics, on the last one/side view I can see what looks like a possible spur bump on Easter's left leg.

WCc-that sure is a nice looking horse. Hope you can get him a home. I also hope that your washer gets to working.

Hurley-there are at least four shows coming up not including local county fairs and such: The Wisconsin International Poultry Show in Portage, WI on Sept 25-26 (I'll be there!!); West Central Wisconsin Pigeon and Poultry Club Annual Fall Show in Menomenie.... Menomnie...... Anemone.....Menomonie-that's it! Menomonie on October 1; Beaver Dam Pigeon and Bantam Show and swap in Beaver Dam October 15-16 ( I'll be at this one too!); and Wisconsin Bird and Game breeders Show and Swap In Fond du Lac Oct 29. Although this last one might be game birds not chickens. I'll have to fine out.
In October there is also the huge National chicken show-Cross Roads in Indianapolis October 28-30.

I had a fun filled day of mowing the lawn and I decided to try my hand at making jam! Before I forget all that good teaching H&R gave me! I'll know how it all turned out tomorrow. I also did something else but I'm wiped from mowing so I can't remember! Must have been really thrilling......LOL!!!

Glad to hear y'all had a nice Fourth!

Man, I'm tired!!! Have a good night all!!

I never candle eggs, so I cannot give an answer how long between int and ext pip.. It is much less stress not knowing when they int pip, don't you think ?

I got a lot of the garden watered today.. even did about 2/3 of the potatoes.. those pesky weeds are sneaking up on us, too..

I hope it rains like they are forecasting for tonight.. I might have to break down and water some of the corn.. Not all of it, though..

another batch of guineas started hatching,, about a day early..

One of the neighbors dropped off 24 guinea eggs he wants hatched..

had a real good hatch % for the 4th of July eggs.. almost all of them hatched.. (guuineas)

OH, yes,,, the peachick is ffinally walking and eating.. his toes are a bit bent, I thinkhis legs are way too long for his body..LOL

I would love to take the silkie pullets to a show, maybe the lavender bantam AMs. I'm cool with grooming / bathing / trimming tails, etc. What I'm unsure of (so I'd really like to just GET to a show to scope it out) is the setup at the show, as in do you buy and bring your own coop cages? If so, what ones do you get? Size? Where? Another question is I know you can take non-standard varieties (or breeds) to shows, but how does that work? Just enter them and they judge them against other non-standards? I would like to start showing the Iowa Blues for the simple aspect of getting their numbers started in the show ring should we get enough people together and showing to get the breed officially recognized.

I'm no stranger to the show ring in horses and dogs, but have never competed in chickendom.

I did get certified to test birds, need to put that order in for the antigen. Hopefully I can hit some of these upcoming shows and learn the ropes!

Oh! And photo of the day - the little banty's 2nd egg. Isn't it cute?

BantyEgg.jpg

Not the greatest shot - crappy cell phone pic in low light, but shows the size anyway. It's the prettiest, sky blue you've ever seen, just gorgeous, and so teeny. The brown egg is about a standard large egg size, a bit smaller than the typical grocery store eggs.

Evening all!
Spent Sunday in Lockport, IL with my daughters, their families, some friends, etc and had a wonderful time. Drove home Monday and made it home in time for the picnic with our wonderful neighbor Geri and her family and my new boss. I got hired for a part time job, won't have any hours until August, then it'll be busy until the job ends in mid October. I'll have a part time job next spring-Oct next year if I want it. Have another interview on Thursday for another part time job, which I"ll work until things pick up w/1st job, then work it thru the winter.

Spent this morning picking up the shingles laying around the garage from when they previous owners/flippers of the house did the roof, then tackled rocks, rocks and more rocks around the back of the house. I understand rocks around the foundation for 8 inches or so for drainage, but 6' away?? Starting to look a lot better back there. Have tree trimmer coming sometime this week or next to trim our 3 huge maples, then we can throw a shade/sun mixture in the backyard and with any luck fill in all the ratty looking spots.

Was talking to DH this evenign about starting to round up stuff to build coop and find some more 6' dog kennel sections for chicken run to add to the free ones neighbor gave us. He says "you realize getting started is going to be expensive, don't you?" I said, "you think? How much do you think it'll take?" Him: "About $2500.00"
th.gif
Not me! Next week I start scavenging for stuff. Did he really think I was going out and buying new? Oh cr*p... what was I thinking? I should have just said "yeah... we better get started" and held my hand out for the cash.

Tomorrow I'll be preparing the bed for Stanley Mutt Mutt's final resting place. Got a pretty dogwood bush and will put a bunch of flowers in there. Not a job I am looking forward to, but he deserves a pretty place to rest. Sure do miss that boy.

Carol, sorry to hear about the hay situation

Amy - Cribbage, wow, haven't played that in... wow, 20 years or so, not even sure I remember how, but I sure did enjoy the game!

Cind, sorry to hear things aren't a whole lot better with Duke. Great little greenhouse/coop you got, I'm jealous! found a great 22x28 carriage house that's in great shape on craigslist that needs to be torn down.. you tear it down and move it. Sadly I have no tools or way to move all that if I could tear it down! Oh well...

TO sorry about your cuckoo roo, yeah, I try not to plan to much of anything, less disappointment that way. The ducklings are adorable!

jim sorry to hear the peafowl hatch is going poorly.

FT I transplanted some of the hostas to the back yard but the rest went into the compost pile, pitiful little boring green buggers, but they were green, which was sorely lacking in the backyard. If you are looking for some, my neighbor has some that get HUGE, they are little starts that sprung up, but I've transplanted several now and they are growing like mad. I'm going to get a few more in the next few days and I'd be happy to get a couple and pot them up for you, if you want, I can snap a pic and you can let me know if you want a couple.

LOL Shanti, a play date for ducks, is it any wonder people think we're all crazy???

They are adorable.

Hurley I am SO JEALOUS, you're birds are beautiful, all of them. I suddenly can see myself becoming a chicken thief ...

sending all the good vibes I can muster for you! Sorry to hear things are a bit bumpy for you right now. Sorry you have to part with your horse, he's beautiful and if I had a place where I could have him I'd take him in a heartbeat.

Well, off to bed, since I only got about 3 hours of sleep last night due to wrenching my back and sciatica acting up again... night all!

Good rainy evening everyone! I am showered and relaxing after a most hectic day of working and toting plants and various animals to the fair....then unloading hay! Whew!

Kristip--I was going to say a side shot on that bird too. It kind of looks like a few sickle feathers coming out but it's hard to tell in that pic. I have some Ameracaunas of the same age and I still have no idea! Well....I am posting as I am reading and I am sorry to say but those tail feathers are looking kind of Male to me!
sad.png
Sure is a pretty bird though--what color is that called?
Amyable...that range feeder sure looks like it would be handy to have....
DrH--their names are Clarence and Cordelia ...just came to me while I was locking them up the other night...he does look like a Clarence! Oh--I know how that happened...I was calling him Buddy or Buster and started to think of my uncle Clarence (who all the nieces and nephews call uncle Buster) and that is why I must have thought of it! (funny how the mind works isnt it?)
Gothchick--that sounds like my place!!! Really that is what I would LOVE to do. I have it going here kinda but how in the world can they make it work with the price of feed, vets etc? Do they let outside people adopt the animals too?
Frenchie...I hear ya on the tiller stuff! Seems that you have to call to get them "thinking about" looking at it and then call again to get them "working on it!" I guess those repair guys think that spring is past so you wont be needing that tiller again until next year...or maybe fall to put the garden to bed? You have sooooo relieved me; I have to plant my potatoes yet too! I sure hope they have time! I didnt save any space in the garden for them so I still dont know where I will put them...thinking about plopping 2 land scape timbers down and putting them between them and covering with straw! Good grfief, they are growing in the basket they are waiting in....might work....better than the barrel idea from last year???? Thanks for directing us to that link!!! Very fascinating information Pete has shared. Took me the better part of an hour to read it but...

Hey Hurley...come to the Jefferson County Fair this Friday...judging begins at 8 AM! I will be there! I got the day off from cooking just tonight...
Deb--glad to hear that you are accomplishing things at your new place! My client said today that we really need to go to Janesville...you going to be ready to entertain us soon?
lau.gif
Really I just want to check out the place and see what you've done! Hey, post this pics of hostas here so we can all see them...I was hoping that you didnt say you composted them!

OK--I think I got EVERYBODY!!!! (well, except for Jim...) So anyhow--looks like my evening is gone and it's time to hit the hay! Do you all realize that we will be up to 1,000 pages before long? Anybody know if we are close to the top? I used to but now we have some other long winded posters

Hey everyone,

So I broke down and ordered from Ideal. I got 4 Easter Eggers, 25 Female Assortment, and 2 Polish. I am going to keep the EEs the Polish and any extra EEs that come with the assortment and then I am selling the rest. I am planning to sell the extras for $4 a chick and they will pay for the order for me.
smile.png
I already have about 10 of the extra chicks claimed. I searched for local Easter Eggers but most I found were pricey and straight run and I need females only.

Terri O- The ranch/rescue gets donations and I believe they offer trail rides and stuff to make some extra money. I really don't know the details. It's my sisters thing. It's not much fun for me being pregnant and all I can't ride or do anything fun. I could take my daughter out there but it really doesn't pay because we have basically our own little petting zoo right at our house. LOL!

Just wanted to add that I was going to place my order through Meyer but the lady on the phone was really rude/crabby and they couldn't answer any of my questions. Then I told them I was going to go order online and the assortments/breeds I wanted sold out just as I was going to order and they wouldn't be available till the 25th and I can't wait that long. I want the chicks mixed in with the rest before the baby arrives. I will not have time for chicks, a newborn, and a 2 year old.

Thanks everyone for the well wishes for my hen. It is very much appreciated. And I'm glad to hear your roo is healing up too, Bigz.

Cind, I hope your carpals/metacarpals heal up real soon. And I'm still hoping the best for Duke. Can't imagine those kids like you too much!
lol.png
Or maybe they do, since they're still being naughty. Too funny. I'll have to mention that idea to my SIL in case either of her girls gets out of hand......

I hear you on the frustration with the P Reds, DrH. Mine go in & out of the nest boxes all day long too, but no eggs. I was watching one of them today while I was changing their water. At first, I thought Gladys had prolapse & was silently cursing another malady when she suddenly squirted out a yolk, a beautiful, golden yolk and nothing else. And then it was gone....... What is up with my darn birds?!?!?!?
he.gif

Carol, glad to hear you got the mower going. I sure hope you find a loving home for your horse. It's a beauty.

Ditto on DK's answer to cribbage. Haven't played in 20 years, can't remember how, but loved it, same goes with spades. Never learned sheepshead, but dad & the uncles played at every single family get-together. Does that count for anything?
lol.png

Shanti, I'm still wishing I was closer to have taken you up on some of last year's hay. Oh well. Very nice of you to offer.

Raining????? Really, TO? Why the heck won't it rain here? The radar looked so promising, but no such luck. My tomatoes & peppers need a drink, as do the onions.
I went for a quick spin around the yard after getting home from shopping with mom, and the raspberries are getting red! And what a bumper crop this year. I am so excited! I want to make some pies, jelly & ice cream. The currants & juneberries are looking good too this year.

Frenchie, I should have clarified that the eggs are the ones my duck is sitting on. Much easier on me for sure! We went over to my in-laws to light off the fireworks we can't shoot off here in town; it was a fantastic show with the fireworks and the lighting! When we came home I checked on Taffy and I could hear peeping through the eggs so things must be ok!

I better get going before the storm hits, it is almost here now.

Everyone have a great day tomorrow! I'll probably be stuck at work until late again!

Duke goes to the vet today.

Wrist is a little better... it may have "popped" back. I made a fist today!

May have to watch my PR's (Tiny) crop..... either she's been a pig or it's starting to get impacted.

Hope everyone is doing OK,
