I use the Seven dust too. I dust my girls by picking each one up like a backward football, and starting at the vent, dust there and work your way up the bird, making sure to get under the belly good too and on backs and around the neck. I only do it if I see buggies. In the spring and in the fall. Yes. Having bugs on them will slow production.

If you have mites or lice, you will be able to SEE them. Check the vent area. If you see creatures scattering away from the light, you will know. Mites look like "moving" pepper granuals. Lice looks like this kinda .... ~ About this long but a little fatter. Probably tan in color. Kinda like a little lobster. They also leave eggs behind on the feathers near the vent. Look for what appears to be dried, crusty poop suck to the feathers. These are probably the eggs. I pull out these feathers to prevent further spred. They don't stay on humans I'm told. If you dust with the Seven dust, all bugs should be gone within a couple days. And I have never had to Re-dust my girls after the 10 days. But they say you should, to make sure they are all gone. I would use your best judgement.

I also put a little Seven in each nesting box after I dust them. And on the poop-trays I have to catch the poop too.

ALSO...know that it does not say on the package of SEVEN ... for use on poultry. But is not harmful to poultry. They sell "Poultry Dust" at Fleet Farm FOR poultry...but I have found it doesn't work and Seven is cheeper.

I also use Red Lake DE but I have found that it doesn't KILL exsisting bugs. But it DOES help with smell. I recommend DE just for that.

Something just ain't right there. Why in your right mind would you want to get rid of that??????????? They can't build next to it? Idiots.

I forwarded this link to DH with a message that just said "I want". I can't wait to hear the response.

Man, I would love to have that barn on my place. I've got the land, don't have the buildings.

In regards to that St. Bernard, that's a weird post... Don't know what a "partial total hip replacement" is, that's a new one to me. If she's looking at a total hip replacement, i.e. putting in metal stem and ball, plastic socket, in a large dog like that yeah, it's going to be $3500 to 4500. Don't know anyone that does it cheaper and to be frank, so much goes into those you don't get paid enough to do them.

If the "partial hip replacement" they are talking about is the standard FHO/FHNE procedure of removing the diseased femoral head and neck and creating a false joint, letting the femur ride in the muscle mass like a sling, I've not seen a surgeon do them for $600, but maybe a GP. You get what you pay for. Ask the poor lady with the German Shepherd dog that came in to our clinic with a MRSA infection, giant nasty draining wound of many weeks duration following a botched FHO surgery with a (if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all) veterinarian. They apparently had some bleeding, left a gauze in the surgery site, and it healed in there, abscessed out, and drained. Complete cluster (and yes, the owner is suing them). Embarrassing to me that someone in my profession pulled that one off - IMHO if you are that poor at surgery, you have no business performing it. But, he would do it cheaper than the surgeon. Nuff said. FHOs with a surgeon generally run $1500-2000 for the whole hospital stay in this area.

Gotta run, but yeah, those kind of ads and the mis-information/skewed information always makes me wonder. Trust me when I say that amount of money does not just go straight into some vet's pocket.

Oh, that poor poor dog with the MRSA. I have had it and it and IT HURTS BIG TIME. And I should know about pain !!! Actually today is my 40th aniversary since my first bout with Bone cancer as a child. Lost my leg 40 yrs ago, or should I say they took it from me
lau.gif
Anyway, MRSA hurts way more then that !!!! That is bad stuff. Betcha the insurance companies wish they would have sold me a policy !!!

Anyway, what is a GP, general practitioner like human doctors?

Yeah, don't ya wish it went right into your pocket !!! I have the land (ok well bank and I do) for that barn too !!! Can't even afford a pole barn these days with ET not working and my chicken feed bill every month.

I'm going to check my chickens out for mites and lice. They're laying but the eggs seem small.

Ok, back outside while the weather is nice.

Enjoy people !!!

Afternoon all!
Beautiful day today! Got the garden almost completely weeded. I could have finish it but I got tired after about 2 1/2 hours of weeding and my back was killing me! I really really really need to get a chiropractor and have it re-adjusted. The constant pain is getting so old..... I had some Dairy Farm Dog help from the crew next door. Zeva and Roxy. Zeva was trying to get shy Roxy to visit with "Aunty Heather" and in the process of showing off for Roxy, she knocked over two of my more pathetic corn stalks with her tail. Then she tried to naw on anther one. I yelled at her and Roxy ran but Zeva was like "What! I'm taste testing here!!" I told her that if she was going to trash my garden then she needed to take her pig stinky body home....Or I was going to grab her and she'd get a bath! She left to go "help" her human sister walk her 4-H pigs.
roll.png
Zeva is a Smooth or Short Coated Border Collie that is being trained to replace Dusty the Awesome. Roxy, who is a black tri rough/long coated BC, was originally slated to take over for Dusty, but she is terrified of cows.

Anyway, I cleaned underneath the rabbit cages and cleaned out the Hen Pen. Gave everyone new waterers so I could un algae-fy the ones they were using. I had a lot of "help" from the PR who is a total Mama's Girl. I think I'll name her Midge? What do y'all think? The BR pullet is fantastic! I now have to figure out what to do with her. She had been away from the other pullerts and Buzzy for so long I'm afraid they will be rather nasty to her.

I also made some Peach Jam today. Just got done. It's not to bad but not as sweet as I thought it should be. Either I missed a cup of sugar or the peaches just weren't very good ones. The jam set up well and looks great so I don't think I messed up on the sugar. I can't wait to let it set up some more then try it. I think it would be rally good on some sweet rolls or Hawaiian bread.

FT-I would love to adopt more pets but I have enough! Although, I'm kind of kicking around the idea of a barn cat. I will absolutely deny I ever said this! I don't ever want another indoor cat and I cant be mean enough to make the poor thing live in the garage in winter. I want a proven mouser so I figure one day, the right cat will show up out of knowhere and be just perfect. Cranky, standoffish, opinionated and a great mouser. He will be black as the Ace of Spades and have green eyes. I even know his name...Harry.

CC-I think your dh will think you are joking.....you are joking right????!!!???
lau.gif
But you are correct! Who in there right mind would want to get rid of a cool barn like that??

Well, I'd best be off! It's almost doggie dinner time so I have to get bowls as set up!
Later!

Nope! Serious as a heart attack, and he knows it.

He even agreed with me, that they were nuts to want to get rid of it. Why even buy the stinking property then? Are empty lots that rare up there? Let someone who wants the barn buy that lot. I just don't get it........

If I had $$$ coming out of my....., I'd hire some people to disassemble it & put in up here, but that's not happening.
hit.gif
I'd adopt more animals if I had that barn, FT.

And you're right, MLH. It is an absolutely glorious day out there today! Why can't it be like this every day? I worked in the garden, completely raked out the chicken/rabbit compound (all 20'x20' of it!) & hauled the chips/shavings all over the yard to mulch under my fruit trees & berry bushes. Man, have we got the trees! Now I've got to haul jugs of water all over to water some of my pots of flowers & the tomatoes. Something chewed a few more of our pepper plants too.
somad.gif

Well, better get back at it. Enjoy the day, everyone! And I hope you're feeling better soon, MLH! With everything you've done today, I can see why you're achey.

So we got the old guy today and he is AMAZING! We are so in love with him. He is perfect with going outside, he's gentle, and is amazing with our daughter. He doesn't jump on furniture (even though we would let him) and he won't eat food unless you specifically give it to him and then he takes it very softly. He's knows sit, stay, lay down, speak, no bark, and leave it. Also the best part is that he is already protective of me and my daughter with strangers. We went to Petco and he was fine and is very loving but I had people come today to buy some chicks. Well I went downstairs to open the door and he stayed upstairs with my daughter. Once they got in the house he stood at the top of the stairs and growled/barked and would not let them up the stairs by my daughter. I had to go up and put him in the bedroom so they could get up stairs to see the chicks. So I wont have to worry about anyone breaking in when my husband is a work at night.

Yea you can stop looking. LOL! I know what you mean about the shelters being full. I was surprised this guy was there so long just because he was old. He is perfect and still has some energy left in him. We did have one little spat with our big dog. The new guy tried to lay on our other dogs bed in the garage and our big guy snapped at him but luckily the old guy didn't react at all so our big guy dropped it really quickly. I'm not gonna let them alone together outside until I am positive they will get along. Plus the new guy wants to play with our big boy and I'm afraid he's gonna hurt himself or play too rough for his age.

Yeah, I would take it real real slow. Especially with 2 males. Years ago I had a male Doberman and two females (1 doberman and 1 german shepard). Then one day my SIL wanted me to go to the shelter with her to look for a new dog for them. Well at that time I was totally into Dobermans (I was in my 30's) (Now 50's and a poodle lover
lol.png
) Anyway, there was a stray doberman male there that was skin and bones. They said he was going to be put down most likely the next day because he had been there so long and his time was up. This was in Racine. Anyway, I went home that night and couldn't stand the thought of that dog being killed. I drove back after hours and put a note on their door that I would be there to adopt him when they opened.
When I brought him home he was a saint. My females got along great with him. Ceasar, my male Dobe was fine until after a few days when he figure out that the Vistitor was actually staying !!!
ep.gif
Then the fights started. I had kept the new dobe "Gus" in my utility room and in a crate at night. One day when I opened the back door Cesar had had enough and they both came running in the house attached to each others necks !! It was horrid.
The whole time I had planned on rehomming Gus but not until I had him fattened up and given shots, the whole nine yards.
After he was there for a couple of weeks his true personality came thru. He would run back and forth barking at the neighbors (I think they're rabbit was running in the yard all the time). Then one day I went out there to try to catch him by the collar and bring him in (to shut him up) and He would have nothing to do with it. He jumped up and snapped at me !!! When we was done barking and doing his thing then he would come in.
Long story short (and actually forget some of it now) I found him a home with someone that had lost their doberman in a house fire. Lost touch with them but it did work out. Just wasn't going to work out with Cesar and him.
Have to remember that Cesar was a big black doberman that was spoiled rotten and would lay on the recliner with me. He was just jealous and Gus wanted the attention too !!! Boys will be boys no matter what species I guess !
