Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Good cool night all! Yikes on that prolapse. How scary for you and I am sure for the bird. I too would be squeamish to push it back in... good luck and keep us posted on how she goes through the night. Do you have a neighbor nearby that would possibly have some penicillin that you could borrow a dose or two of it? I guess I am thankful and lucky that hubby has the whole dang pharmacy in the fridge in the dairy barn...

Went to the Farm Technology Days today in Marathon County (by Marshfield) with my parents and their friends and my brother today (left the kids with hubby and off I went bright and early.) got a bunch of free samples of chicken feed. I notice that the stuff that Fleet Farm had there is less protein that the Prince mix that I get from my local co-op. Wonder what the deal is with that? It is both labeled Grower Chick Feed...

Ended up coming home with 8 "dual purpose blacks" but I think that they are going to look like Barred Rocks... and 4 turkeys. OMG!

Fricken Chicken math anyways... My dad had called me a couple weeks ago saying that the co-op they get their horse feed and such from had a bunch come in and someone refused to come pick up the birds they ordered (who does something like that anyways?!?!) He said that he would really like them for him and my mom but he has no where to put them and no time for him to make something into a quick coop. I told him to keep them in one of the horse stalls (they have a SUPER nice horse barn.. makes me jeleous ... no wonder I never got new shoes growing up, they were saving up for that barn!? LOL) and call it good. So, behind my back he proceeds to talk to my hubby and work out a deal where I will just raise them up and we can have one of the turkeys and 4 of the chickens. Man alive....

Hi... My name is Diana and I suffer from chicken math!!!

20 chickens minus a rooster going to a 4h kid tomorrow, 6 ducks, 4 turkeys, 2 guineas and wanting 3 peafowl. What in the heck? I have only been at this for a couple months and it has severely kicked in already. HIGH FIVE to all those that also suffer... wonder what i will be getting next?

Tomorrow I am working on clearing out the shed that I will be making into my new coop - seeing the one I have is obviously too small.... lordy!

Goth - cute pup! And glad to hear that it is working out good so far

Good evening all! Worked until 9PM tonight!

Didnt leave here until 1:45 but still! THe farrier was here to trim and reset shoes on the horses...dd19 is headed to an event this weekend and a show next weekend so she wanted them to be freshly trimmed. Two didnt really need it but he will be back in 8 weeks to do them before the state horse show and that was too long to wait...good thing he will hold the check until Saturday is all I can say.

So my client and I drove down to Janesville for a pacemaker check and now she is freaked because the test told her that the battery had about 3 years left on it and then it would have to be changed. It is done as an outpatient procedure but I guess she didnt understand that part of what she said. I heard about how she didnt want to go to the hospital again all the way home. I finally told her that I wanted to listen to my book on tape and that she should stop talking and listen too!

THen I saw I had 5 more pages to read...geez you guys sure talk lots!
I had wanted to do a bit of weeding when I got home but it was already getting dark. I think I will got out and lock everything up and maybe I can wake up early tomorrow? (doubtful....)
I picked up a cute hen from Elaine last night in Madison. SHe is supposed to be a barred rock but id not as definitely black and white like I have seen them. She almost has a brownish or greyish area between the black and white on each feather. Makes her look kinda smokey colored. When she is out of quarantine I will take a few pics of her. Seems to be a very nice bird.
Hey Hurley--those cuckoos are starting to lay! (and so are the quail SW!) Unfortunately none of the birds seem to understand what a nest box is! The eggs are just on the floor all the time. And way in the back too so I have to use a stick to reach them!

Well, done with my Lipton...time to head out! Good night and sweet dreams. Terri O
(PS) GC--be careful leaving a new dog with your daughter OK?
FT--you better stay off of Craig's List! I could just see your hubby going to get that barn for you!

And Duck math, Goat math, horse math, donkey math, dog & cat math, and ....................... HELP !!!!

Wow.... with a barn like that you could turn into a house, and still have room for the critters!
What an odd machine! Never heard of a machine like that for "horseback riding". Is it maybe a trainer? No stirrups? Weird little thing, I wouldn't spend $450 on it... that's for sure!

GC.... Looks like a great match! Hope it all works out for you!

kristip.... sure hope your hen gets better soon!

Dornes.... Man, what a coop! The nesting area looks kinds small for 30 hens, but there is allot of "up". Hummmm...

Well, got some "house work" done today and did some weeding. Jasmine is catching on to the "pet taxi" out to the tractor.

Today when I open the door to it I didn't even have to chase her in it! She went right in and so did most of the chicks.... one little guy got a bit lost but he got in with a little help. When she's ready to go back to the brooder she packs them up is waiting when I get out there!

Actually, I think chickens are pretty easy to train.

Good Morning All! Geez take a day to go fishin and takes over an hour to catch up! Chickens, ducks, dogs, tractors, barns, horses, teeth, OH MY! Have just enough time to post then off for a hairs cut. You'd think I would know better after all these years than to believe the BFF's fishin stories. The fish weren't as big or as plentiful as was told.

Found out that I can't sit on a boat cushion for more than 4 hours without a back ache let alone 8 1/2. But there's fish in the fridge that are headed to the freezer today.

Gotta get goin!

Kristip keep your hen separate from the rest of your flock until she is healed. The other birds might peck at her and actually kill her in the process (don't mean to freak you out). Prep H is definitely something to continue using, and make sure you keep the area clean. You can pick up "pen-aqueous" penicillin at Fleet Farm, and a syringe (although you might need to go to Walgreens to get a small enough gauge needle for a bird, but not too tiny or the penicillin won't go through it since it's so thick. Dose her for three days. If the vent continues to prolapse, your only other alternative is to stitch it in place. When my bird prolapsed, I couldn't see myself sewing her up and would have taken her to the vet had she not healed on her own.

Good luck. Oh, and immediately take her off layer rations. You want to do all you can to prevent her from laying eggs for awhile.

I've been busy hanging out with my "other birds" down at Oshkosh getting ready for the EAA fly-in. Last night I took a shot of the Ford Tri-motor I was working on. Does it look like a duck to anyone else, or was I just missing the ladies back home?

Have a good day everyone. It's back to cleaning the lower barn of all the presents the horses left me over the winter.

Shanti I am sooo jealous that you get to work on that plane!!! I was an aircraft mechanic in the Navy on P-3 Orions.
We will be going to see the air ship coming for the show, that's right folks, the zeppelin company in Germany is making smaller versions of the graf zeppelin.
AND in CA they are using the old Moffett field hangers (I was stationed there)

Off to go ride the young horse, feed horses and chickens, then babysit, and go ride with new client.
Oh and wanted to share that 3 dozen of my eggs are going to be used in a variety of ways for a client's middle son's wedding.... so kewl!

Stay frosty out there folks
Carol

Good morning! It was refreshing to only have to read a handful of messages today...maybe I will get to work on time. I had to go through my email box and pres delete a whole bunch...there is just not time for all of that reading.
Carol it sounds as if you have a fun day planned! I sure wish my job involved riding horses. I was telling the trimmer that I hadnt been riding much or camping at all with my horse this summer yet. I think I am doing the fund raising event though that will involve them on Oct. 8. It is for a shelter that I volunteer for...I need to talk to you about this Carol--remind me.

(my memory)
DrH--I actually got my fishing license so I am that much closer to actually GOING fishing. We were hoping to find time for it at the bash...HA! Maybe I will just grab a pole and mosey down to the lake. Or maybe I should keep the pole in my car? THat might be the only way I get to go....
Well, not much new here to report. I am wondering how Kristip's hen is this morning? I hope a bit better--those were some nasty pics! I have heard that the prepH works wonders though.
Off to work for me! Have a fantastic day! Terri O
