Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Good sweltering morning all!
caf.gif

Man am I tired, and now can't think of anything to write about.
I have permission to use fans on the chickens, so I am off to get them set up.
House pullet is getting better and seems to want to be around people, the dogs are having fun, they have "chicken t.v."
Well off to feed horses, water chickens, and go hang out with a 6 yr old till 4 pm.

Stay cool!!
Carol

Man this heat is kicking my butt! my asthma is flaring up in this weather.
Hope the chickens will be ok- tried the frozen water bottles, but they buried them away from where they hunker down. may try again later.
Carol nicely helped me cull that bird with the prolapse... I could tell the infection was getting bad and I thought it the most humane thing to do. After talking to a few people on here and other places... we are wondering if she did not have some internal issues, - early egg layer at 18 weeks, but roo like features and attitudes... hard to say. Her littermate is off kilter, but dd5 is giving lots of hugs to the pullet to comfort her. Not sure if it is, but makes her feel better.
Now we just need to see how much of an enabler Carol really is. She is good at talking me into birds.... Dh does not always agree, but there is that permission/forgiveness thing right!

stay cool everyone.

Just Saying Mornin All! Only good thing is that we're all upright. So far. Slept past 6 this morning now I'm behind.

Jim you touched a nerve with the short wire comment. Think they thought they'd never have to change a switch and wire WAS expensive. Yup Cind I've had to explain to youngins what a Norge was.

That's funny about putting AC in the coop told L that we have a small one up north that wasn't being used.

raim sorry your duckling didn't make it. It happens some times. Looks like it's gonna be sliced pickles this year, no baby dills. Not firing up the top of the stove to do the canning. OK I just lied have some broccoli that needs to go in the freezer. Think I can see the cuc's growing. Went from one inch to 3-4 over night. Cut some dill this morning too. Should go pick berries this morning also but want to get the last wall in the bedroom stripped. Just went out to kiss L goodbye and it's thunderin and not looking conducive to berry pickin. Quandry solved! The weather sure is makin the kids crabby. Fric wants to tear me a new one. Peatwo even gave me a whack and Buster well he's just Buster.

Talked to the BFF yesterday he was gonna can dilly beans and blanch grn beans. Told him to move the stove out in the garage.

everyone!

good morning,, I had coffee outside .. It was nice weather wise, but the flies bit me to pieces.. I finished the last half cup inside..

we had a good amount of rain last night.. we were right on the edge of the big storm it appears.. I can't complain about this heat wave.. rain at night, hot during the day.. I have to stay out of the garden to avoid getting poked in the eye from the fast growing corn..

My blackberries are like small trees.. there are leaves on them the size of my hand.. and they are about 8 feet tall.. even with the chickens running through them, they can't knock them down.

You guys are lucky I can't post pictures on byc.. my posts are too long already..

the youg chickens did not hesitate to come out this morning.. It sure is interesting how fast they learn.. There is one small barred rock that hates to go in at night.. she is content to let everything else go in, and then try to bed down outside all by herself.. I had to net her two nights in a row.. maybe she enjoys the ride, eh?

Cind, we did catch all the babies and put them into a pen.. They were trying to latch onto each one of the other turkey hens, but the hens just ignored them.. we never had much luck with mothers and babies.. free ranging is hard on mortality..

I have a guy coming any minute to pick up some chickens. I better get upstairs so I don't miss him..

It should stay nice and cool at least until the sun burns through..

Hi again, the guy called, can't make it until later in the week.. Even the dependable ones don't always pan out..

We just had another round of rain.. nice and steady and no wind. Sounds like you Southerners are getting slammed right about now..

I traced that odor that showed up last night.. It is not in the corn field, it is something under our deck.. I will have to take a flashlight out there later and see what it is.. I could make out a pile of something.. I am guessing it is mama turkey.. we will see.... the deck is only about 2o inches off the ground..

You guys and your rehoming those critters.. I am glad you don't live close to me.. LOL

Good REALLY hot morning! I am posting as I read today.....Yes FT that barn looks surprisingly like mine! I really could use the horizontal carsiding on that little shed for replacement boards on mine....dont really need everything else though! I think it is such a shame that all the old barns are being taken down and steel sheds are replacing them....makes me want to cry! (the estimate to fix mine up is enough to make me want to cry too though!) Cool about your road trip! He didnt mention ANYTHING about you getting fencing on clearance! I guess maybe he was worried that I might get it in my head to fence off more of our place? So what kind is it???? I have a couple rolls of tape fencing that I really want to get up here...cant afford the posts and mounting stuff do it though! Then of course you need a different fencer for tape than for the plain wire....more $$$
Jim--you scare me about that tooth! I have one in the same spot that my dentist says probably will need some fixing very soon...it has also been filled and refilled and right now there is a nice hole in it perfect for catching raspberry seeds...but it doesnt hurt--yet! She also said that she wouldnt pull it because then the top tooth doesnt have anything to bite against and it causes problems up there? Did your Doc say anything about that?
Thank you BBP! My neighbor drops his traps in the river to "dispose" of the critters he catches...makes me sick! Just the thought. He calls me weak cause I would have done just what you did! One time when I trapped a great horned owl and took it to the park to let it go he said it probably beat me home...perhaps, but I didnt lose anymore ducks! Just what are they supposed to do with all the people taking over their space anyhow? I guess if we are willing to provide easy food they are willing to eat it!
RAIM (and BL4)--so sorry about the duck! That is too sad....
Shanti--congrats to your daughter! You are making your dress? I always envy people that can sew...I can do hadwork fine but for some reason I have a love/hate relationship with my sewing machine. I got my Grandma's machine here now, all tuned up and ready to sew...I think I am chicken to use it!

BigZ--you made me laugh with your "wave the chicken in the air" comment! It certainly feels that way! My DD19 came out while I was doing chores yesterday and informed me that she wanted to bake!!!

She did go ahead and make a raspberry egg custard but didnt use the GR flour from BL4! (I hear it was delish) We have nothing in the way of air conditioning and man the house sure heated up more...if that is even possible!?
Celtic--thanks for the information about Martens. I know that I have seen them here (along with mink) Both being ruthless killers! In fact I saw one that wad killed on the road and I thought it was a mink but now that I have looked at that pic on Wikepedia I know that it was a Marten...and I thought it was WAY too hot here to learn anything!
Susie J--Arent those possums so ugly they're cute? (in a rodent sort of way...) The come in my coop quite often looking for "stuff" to scavenge. Nice of you to give him a ride away! My neighbor drowns them....yup the same one I refered to in above posting....
Yeah Jim...I always try to drop off critters far from other farms...dont want to give anyone else problems... DD19 and I just broke a "wishbone" from the other night...I WON! I wished for the heat to break...think I will get my wish?
We had rain here last night about 1. This morning it is gray and I am hoping that the rain by DrH is on it's way here....gotta go and cover the baby guineas just in case. Oh, my breakfast is done! Mashed potatoes...think I will add ice to them! Have a fantastic day! Terri O

(PS) Surgery is on for tonight Carol if you are up for it! (we are doing 2 bumble foot surgeries)

T O, My dentist didn't mention anything about a matching tooth.. That is what I have now.. I don't see what the problem is.. I just can't chew with that top tooth...

I found out that the dead bird under the deck was my Uko kei rooster.. I got it out and buried it.. I don't know why he died, and am not about to do an autopsy to a bird covered with maggots.. LOL

I saw a feature on RFD about a midwestern farmer who was raising sorgum and making flour and selling it all over the world. I taped the article.. I don't recall if it gave an address or what.. I will have to watch it again and take note..

the air conditioner quit while Annie was to town.. I checked everything I could think of to make it go back on.. She comes in and tries something I didn't and it went right on.. I didn;t know it was plugged into a power strip.. and the reset tripped on the strip..
