Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Christ'sCowgirlChick :

Hi I'm from WI about an hour north of GB!

If any of you know where I can buy Wayandotte's in WI that are either show quality (perfered) of just good layers please let me know. PM or Email. And I forgot how to spell the blue/green egg layers that starts with an A but I'm looking for the same caracteristics in those. If they were bantams that would be even better since that's what I have now but I'd buy standard too.

Go Wisconsin!

Hello all! Stopping in for a short update!

As MustLoveHens mentioned earlier, I took in her three waste of space banties and they are all doing well. The Barred Rock bantam is giving all the other girls a run for their money. I'm pretty sure she's top girl now.

I've got two chickens in the house right now. Fred is still recovering from her mouth abscess, but now another hen called Leonard is back in the house because of a reoccurring bumblefoot case. Her left foot looked ready to burst when I brought her in. I tried to soak and extract the 'plug' like the threads mentioned, but nothing really came out. It was all just blood and some white, stringy substance which may have been tissue.

Her foot is still massively swollen, and I soaked/squeezed it again last night to no avail. I have no clue what I'm doing wrong here.

Also, my two young poults, which I had raised from eggs two months ago, have both passed. Newton passed roughly two to three weeks ago after I tried integrating both of the poults and they ended up escaping. Marie, the other poult, survived the escape, but Newt wasn't so lucky. On Thursday, since it was so hot and Marie was getting so big, I tried letting her into the run with the adults again. Something got her that night, however, because when I checked the next morning, all I found were a clump of feathers and a bunch of flies. I'm so devastated over this. Those were the first poults I raised since infancy since my first two turks, and they were the first ones I hatched myself. They were so cute and super friendly as well. They always wanted to jump on my chest and snuggle. I feel like I failed them. I intend to set a trap out today to try to catch whatever did this. The run still looks totally secure and I have no clue where anything could have gotten inside.

Good Morning Everyone! WOW looks like the newbie bator is working just fine! Welcome to all!

Breac sounds like your going through a heck of a time. Hope things turn around soon! FT that looks like a starter house to me. Light a match and start er up. CC how long have you had your BA's? From what I've read they sound like the perfect bird. Excellent egg production even in hot weather, and they do well in either extremes. So much more that I can't memeber! I started having trouble getting Fric and Frac in the coop at night. Thought it was Buster it's not, it's Peatwo. Watched last night and he had them cornered on the picnic table. So their back in their appartment.

Was just thinking I could turn that back into my feed/bedding area. Was out there in the rain and lightning trying to get them in. Had another storm roll through early this morning haven't gone out yet to let the kids out and check for damages. Think today might be the day to go get drywall. Glad I mowed before the heat wave, it needs it again. So much to do. Better get at it! Thanks raim for the pic will have to get some regulation paper now for it.

Morning after the storm! We got quite a dumping of rain here through the night hours. There's leaves all over the yard and everything is wet! My garden will surely like it! I need to get in there this week sometime and get the tiller going. I am seeing more clover sprouting up through and I do not like that at all. And velvet leaf... man that stuff is ANNOYING!

The reason the cement slab has to be moved is because the shed has to be moved. The location it is in now will absolutely not work for chickens. The front is the driveway, the one side is the road a little ways down and the other is the LP tank. No where to put a run. And.... in order to get the shed out, the cement slab has to be taken out of the way first. Anyone wanna come bust that up for me?

Lots to do around here today, looking for a recipe for blackberry cheesecake. Picked enough for just a cheesecake. Hubby is off to cut hay for the whole day and it's just the kids and I. Cleaning is on my list of to-dos!

I, know, I know, never drink & read.........
My BAs & BOs are only 18-19 weeks old. After much researching over last winter, I came to the same conclusion as you: BAs sound like the perfect chicken. From what McMurrey claims, a BA holds the world's record for egg laying: 364 eggs in 365 days, although I swear my PRs did that in their first year of laying. They were machines, but not for very long. And these new gals are very friendly. One of the BAs sits on my lap every day, as does one of the buffs. They are beautiful birds also. The BAs have a greenish-purple sheen to their feathers. They seem to be smarter than the buffs too. They catch on really quick & can figure things out for themselves. I just love them. Kinda wish I had a roo. Shhhhhhh!!!!!!

good morning,, man oh man, don't leave this group for a day if you don't like to read...

"Anyone know of a good way to break up a cement slab? It's not too big, but it needs to be broken to pieces "

I broke a lot of slabs out in my shady past.. You have to undermine it.. that is, dig the dirt out from underneath, or better yet, raise the slab so there is air space under it.. then hit it with a sledge hammer and it will break right where you pound on it.. as long as the slab is tight on the ground, you will not get very far by beating on it with any hammer...

if you have a skid steer, you are half way home.. undermine it and take off the edges, eventually you will be able to raise it with the bucket..

I was told that the way to tell an americauna from an aracauna is by the cheeks.. they both have mumps, but the aracauna has extra "whiskers" sticking out to the sides..

I have about 40 "teenage" ameracaunas.. If I do not sell them, I will eat them. I figure they will make good "cornish hens"..

I have a few older ones running with the barred rocks.. I can't tell a hen from a roo with them... they all taste the same, I am guessing..

breakfast is ready... laterz .........jiminwisc.......

I looked out the window and saw the duck with her new babies.. I said to Annie,, I thought you said she had 2 babies.. I see 4. yup, duck #2 has 4.. The whole flock of geese were extremely interested in them.. Poor mama could only keep moving away..Annie went out and directed the geese in another direction..

I am thinking of getting rid of all my ducks.. Maybe now would be a good time.. sell a pair of ducks with a family..

I am glad I got the garden mostly tilled before that next rain storm hit us.. the potatoes are really getting full of blossoms. there are a lot of tomato blossoms, too.. The beans are budding so blossoms there soon,,, I have to hand weed the peppers.. they are almost completely hidden by weeds..

I would like to till through the corn at least one more time.. this last time, I couldn't see the ground between the rows because of the corn leaves..the rows are 30 inches apart..

I think I will put the new tines on before I do any tilling.. That will be a good project for today.. I do not feel like working too hard..

They did not have any dancing at the wedding.. Again, I was best man at the wedding.. but they wouldn't let me prove it..

What is behind the shed, Dornes? Neighbors? And I assume you just want to move it without dismantling it?

For those planning the s. bash, I checked into the Mukwonago parks. I think Field park was the one you were thinking of, was it Hurley, on NN & 83? They all have fees. And as nice as it would be to have the bash so close, I am not a resident of the village & therefore could not get us a discount.

Here is a link to more info if anyone is interested:

I checked on Bong park also. I couldn't find any fees for reserving a spot other than a campsite, but you do need a sticker to get in the park, which you can buy at the gate. The park is over 4,500 acres, so I don't think we would have a problem finding a place to gather. They have quite a few small lakes & ponds also.

A vehicle admission sticker is required on all motor vehicles stopping in state parks and recreation areas. Some state forest and trail parking areas also require a sticker. Buy your sticker either when you get to the park or in advance. You can buy either an annual sticker, for admission to all state parks and forests for the calendar year, or a daily sticker, valid only on the date of issue. If you have only a little time to visit, you can buy a one-hour sticker at most state parks and forests. Any vehicle licensed for road use that is towed or carried into a state park fee area is provided free admission.

Annual vehicle admission stickers for 2011 are now available and are valid from date of purchase through December 31, 2011.

Sticker Fees Annual Half price* Daily One-hour**
Vehicle with WI license plates $25 $12.50 $7 $5
Vehicle with WI plates, resident age 65 and older $10 N/A $3 N/A
Vehicle with out-of-state plates $35 $17.50 $10 $5
Bus, Wisconsin license $10
Bus, out-of-state $14

* Half-price annual stickers are available for additional vehicles registered to the same household address.
**One-hour stickers are not available at all state parks or forests.

For the vehicle admission fee, we could meet somewhere & carpool into the park if you want, but the fees do cover the upkeep of the park. HTH
