Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I am all pizza'd up.. I got the lawn mower part.. KaoPectate for Mom, who by now has forgotten she had a tummy ache. She is at the table driving Annie crazy because she won't take her meds.. LOL

Menard's has an 11% rebate off so I took 4 propane tanks in and exchanged them.. they even took 2 old tanks with the old fittings.. Now I don't have any more old tanks left..

I bought a set of assorted metal files.. I have the nasty habit of leaving my files where they can get wet and rusty.. for example, Today I found my last good file out on the outside workbench.. yup,,rusty..

Annie bagged up all the chicken parts.. All the wings in one package.. I can see Buffalo wings in my future...YUUuuummmmmmm

Good Fish Fry Friday All.... Good check up today at the doctor. He's gonna review some pics they took and if everything looks good, he will call monday and schedule surgery. Helped the roofing guys this afternoon. I've been burning the tear off stuff in the fire pit...nice bon fire.

That was fast getting the butcher job done jim. Must be the plucker that saves so much time. Takes me prolly one hour per bird.

Thanks for sharing all the great pics.

Later....

Hello to everyone
frow.gif
it's been awhile. I didn't read all the past posts just paged through some of them. Great pictures and sounds like all the gardens are going well and canning is in progress. We were on vacation this week, we went tubing on the Wolf river, family reunion, Visited son in Milwaukee, visited son in Abrams and worked on the kitchen ( it's almost done) Took some time to enjoy the pool on the hot days. Sure is nice just not going to work ! Our garden is doing well also, beans are going good, peas also. Got a few grape maters (yummy) and some baby red taters.... MMMMMM So sorry to hear about the damage to the camp gate

Glad to hear she's adjusting so well and that you're enjoying her. I felt that way about her, too, in the beginning! She was one of the friendliest and was so very inquisitive and loved to talk to me, tilting her little sweet head.... Our honeymoon lasted 2 1/2 seasons: late summer, fall and winter and then this Spring she became the psycho chick from He11. I don't know if it was her hormones, boredom or she just didn't like any of my shoes but she took great pleasure in planning and making her sneak pecking attacks on my heels and ankles. It'll be interesting to see if she turns on you next Spring. Hope not but you've been forwarned! With all your space and all your critters, I surely hope that chick settles in and hunkers down and enjoys the good life that she has. I know you'll take good care of her and I appreciate you adopting my problem chick. Re plant, I didn't get the name but will try to when I dig the plant. I'm not in any hurry to do that as this isn't the best weather and I've got a driveway full of plants to get in.... but I usually go see her every month or so, so I'll get it on my next trip out there.

More great pictures today, thanks!

Oh, the head cheese stories didn't bother me. I did freak out once when I was 19 and opened my boyfriend's father's frig and was greeted by a HUGE uncovered pig's head staring back at me. That was pretty gross....

Re: the Southern Bash location -- two of us have expressed a strong preference for Dane Co. this time. No one has voiced a strong objection to that that I've seen or can recall. (If I'm wrong about that, please let me know.) No one's taking the lead here, so I'm jumping in. Unless there's a lot of talk here TOMORROW (Sat.) objecting to Dane County as the location let's call it @ Dane Co. come this Sunday at noon. Then we'll have the date & general location and can finalize the actual location next. Someone suggested inviting Mad City Chickens and some other group that I can't remember. I personally don't have any objection to that suggestion, does anyone else object? If not, will the person who suggested it extending those invitations once we finalize the location? It may be good to divide the state up in quadrants with rotating supplemental bashes so that everyone has a chance to come to one closer to them at some point... just thinking outloud....

Re: Craigslist and weirdos, it's always a good idea to ask people to give your their names and telephone numbers in their response when you initially post your ad -- you can say it'll help you eliminate spammers. (If people don't give me that info when requested, I don't respond to their inquiry.) If someone makes me uneasy or my intuition tells me something is up, I'll run their name through WI's online criminal case history to see if they have a criminal case history or not. Sometimes I'll do an internet search on the name & check property listings or online phone directories to make sure they are legit & didn't make up a name. Usually I am able to verify the name & have confidence in making the transaction. So far, so good, knock on wood but why take chances? I also give away a lot of stuff through Freecycle. I mostly leave it towards the end of our driveway and I always specify pickup during daylight hours. I know you can't do that when selling critters but there are steps you can take to try to make each transaction safer. Occasionally, I will meet someone at a public place (usually the library) when I don't want then coming to my home. You can never be too proactive in my opinion. Oh, and if you're going somewhere off the beaten path for the first time, make sure someone knows where you're going or leave the name & address written down at your home so (god forbid) someone will know where to start looking for you if something comes up. If I seem a little paranoid it's because I've worked in the criminal justice field for sixteen long years and have been exposed to the very worst human behavior -- seen the worst of the worst for too long. Now that I'm out of that field for 10 years, I hope to never go back....

Well there's more to respond to but I'm too tired to think of it so I'm calling it a day. Be safe & have a good one, folks!
Elaine

well !!! it just happened to me.. I had a good sized post going and POOF,,,,,,,, gone..

as I was saying;; good luck on your eye appointment Brent..
They wouldn't go ahead with the second operation if the first one was not healed..

Yes,, that plucker makes the job faster.. It takes 20 seconds to do a chicken or turkey.. I ran 2 at a time in it today, but all that did was break my rythm.. it did pluck both chickens , though..

One chicken went riggor on me.. that was when the water went over 160F.. they do not pluck very well then.. I like my water to be 145F to 150F..

the tiny americauna did not do well.. the fingers are too far apart and after a couple of spins, he snuggled between the fingers and just went along for the ride.. The main reason I did such a small chicken was to see how a quail would do.. my opinion ? Not too good..

I will have to make a smaller version of this plucker if we decide to raise any amount of quails..

On the "cornish hen" sized chickens it would still work well..

what really helped speed up the job today was the fact that we cut up the chickens instead of freezing them whole.. It almost completely eliminates the sink time in the house for final cleaning.. that is worth a couple of hours..

we transferred all the americanas into the small lean to for the night.. there are about 35 of them left.. tomorrow they will get partial freedom in the chicken yard.. Now we have a large pen where the peachick and his two buddies can go.. He is living with a turkey poult of about the same age and size and a guinea of the same age, but only about 1/3 their size.. the 3 mismatched musketeers.. we might throw the quails in with them also, if they can all get along..

Annie has to work extra on Sunday.. she has to cover for one of the caretakers whose 24 year old son O.D."d on drugs..
I'm sorry, but I cannot feel sorry for someone like that..

going to post this befor it goes POOF again..

DrH.... How was your trip to the garden? Bet you looked at the cucks!
lau.gif
Yep... cuttin', grindin' or bendin' metal always got to watch for heatin' up! I assume (I know) that you boys are talking about the 4" grinding wheel you put on a drill. I know I had one before we moved.....
idunno.gif

TO.... Hopefully both crops will be ready at the same time! Sure wish there were more Turk babies... I would like one of his baby girls! Oh well. Maybe a grand baby?LOL I have a Turken hen, I thought she was going to be a full size, but now I'm thinking she's a bantam. I know they grow slow, but she's a Dec. hatch and is only the size of my small PR. BTW... That field of flowers that you think are chamomile are most likely mayweed. Same family, but not as good. If it were chamomile I would come and hand cut all I could!!!

Jim... too bad the garden isn't a safe place for the birds. Now that it's going good I let mine go in with me when I weed and such. They even pick through the weeds I pull. If I can't find my grinder I guess I'll break down and get another. That blade is getting a bit "sick", DH doesn't watch to well what he runs over either! I pray the chickens stay behind the mower!!!

tiki... what kind of chickens are those? The look so extra fluffy!

raim... Great score on the trumpet!

MLH....
droolin.gif

BigZ..... Hope you you can get all "fixed up"! Replacing the fluid...right?

Elian.... Good advise!

LOL... that kitten is so small that she ran across the keyboard.... and nothing happen! I got to get new pics of Jasmine's chicks! The cochin chicks are sooo cute! No wonder they can't fly! Those feathered legs and feet have to weigh almost as much as the rest of them! DH said he would help put up the "flight pen" for the guinea keets this weekend.... they are getting pretty big now. LOL.... there is a 10" board about 3" higher than their roost bar. They fight over that 1 spot just to get 3" higher! Silly birds!

I got a new loping shears today so I finally cut all the old canes from the berry patch! I don't think the people who had the house just before us knew about "tending" raspberries. Lots of VERY old canes! Some were even decaying on their own. They even had some of the dead canes tied to the fence and the ties didn't look old.

Oh well, cleaned up now. Probably will take 2 more seasons to get a good crop. Got mostly dried up seeds this year. Will try to get the "wild" ones later this week.

Lots of work to do here..... but d@mn I love this place!

TO (and whoever else has a ton of zucchini!) My daughter just found and tried this.... she says it's real good!

Zucchini Pizza Crust

4 cups..... Shredded unpeeled zucchini, drained and squeezed dry
1/2 cup.... shredded cheddar cheese
1/2 cup.... shredded mozzarella cheese
2 eggs

Heat oven to 400 degrees

in a bowl, combine zucchini, cheddar cheese, mozzarella cheese and eggs. mix well.

press into the bottom and up the sides of a greased 15in x 10in x 1in baking pan.

bake at 400 degrees for 20-25 min or until crust is set and lightly browned.

take out and top with your favorite toppings.

place back in oven until cheese is melted.

let set for 5 min

Morning all!

Elaine-that is very good advice! What is that saying, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure?". I feel like you do, the best person to watch out for yourself is you... and maybe your dog! The person who wanted to invite Mad City to the Southern Bash was me. I did mention it to Alicia and her dh when I saw them at the Cream City Hen workshop and they were excited to be invited. I told them once I knew the locale, I'd shoot them an e-mail.

Cind-I think tiki's chickens are cochin frizzles. They look like them anyway....To me, they always look like they stuck a toe in a light socket and got a little shock! They are sweet chickens though. The frizzle "factor" is a gene and not all chicks frizzle even though they have the gene. I'm starting to see more frizzles in different breeds, like Ameruacans, barred rocks, and Polish, to name a few!
I just trimmed my blackberry bush too. Some of the canes fell about a week or so ago in one of the storms. I don't think it was the right time to trim, but I had to move it so I'll see if I killed it! I keep my raspberry and blackberry bushes in big containers so they stay in more of an organized chaos! Someday I'll plant a berry batch once I pick an area that I don't mind them growing out of!

Well, I'd best get going. It's dump day and I've got to get that stuff that is going collected and in the truck.

Chat soon!

Good Morning All! So glad to hear the good report Bigz! Sounds like your on your way to seeing all the things you shouldn't. Cind Yup I looked
lol.png
I marked one that was an inch long day before yesterday by yesterday aft it was 3"
ep.gif
Unreal! Makin pies today for tomorrow and will probably pick some peckin pickles.
th.gif
More B&B and relish on the way. Jim that's quite fast on the butchering! We're pizza'd up too! L made one and man do the fresh veggies make a difference!
droolin.gif
Susie"J" I vacuum pack the onions they are only good for cooking with but hey it's better than buying them. Did a recon of the freezer only need a few packs of grn beans, grn peppers, and no jalapino's. Still a lot left from last year. But will freeze some for the kids. It's gettin late better get movin!

good morning,, I will put the new primer on the push mower soon.. Annie was up early and picked the yellow beans.. Next she is going after the green beans..

She said that the potatoes next to the bean rows do not have bugs on them.. Next year I will plant bean/tato/bean/tato.. thanks for the tip.. I do have a book that has a lot of companion planting remedies.. I maybe should dig it out and read it over this winter..

the americauna are semi free today and loving it.. we are going to transfer all the quail and guineas from the brooder to the now available pen.. I have to pressure wash it first.. then bleach it..

Cind, the 4" grinder I use is a 90 degree grinder.. It is very high RPM and built for grinding.. The kind you clamp into a drill are OK but they are hard on the drill's bearings..

coffee'd up.. better get outside before the rain comes..
