Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

good afternoon/evening,

Today, I took the carburator apart 3 times.. after narrowing it down, I decided that the float had to be adjusted.. I do not have a float tool, so I eyeballed it.. It worked!! mower starts on the first pull.. runs fast, and then idles down to a slow putt putt like a charm.

then I hand filed a fine edge on the mower blades.. you could shave with those blades, now..

I moved 15 quail into the pen. I cleaned the pen first and then sprayed it with bleach.. Then I lifted it with the tractor bucket and moved it close to the house so that it would not get that late afteroon sun.. Put a nice thick layer of fresh hay for bedding and nibbling. those quail took right to it.. they tunnel through the hay like gophers. I have two males for sure..

I tossed the peachick and his buddy the turkey poult in with the quails.. they mingled right in, no fuss from either gang..

then the storm came.. 1 1/2 inches of rain in less than an hour.
I barely made it to the house without getting soaked.. I just opened all the doors and gates and let the birds pick their shelters.. Of course, the geese headed for the puddle in the driveway and played throughout the whole storm..

I made hamburgers for supper and Annie steamed a bunch of yellow beans she picked today.. those are my favorite..

gonna go check out c/list and then go out and shut doors..
..........jiminwisc....

we didn't get any rain today, since it wasn't too hot outside we worked on getting a bunch of closet doors and room doors stained up so that they can go back to the unit they are from- with the hot and humid weather the doors don't dry properly and I can't bring them into the house to do as the stain smell triggers headaches for me-outside I'm good.

Made some small brownies tonight so we'll have them with ice cream-should step outside the front door and check my marion berry bush.

DD and DS(9) go to camp tomorrow mid-day and will be back on Wed. Guess DS(6) and I will be pulling all the chore duty for the next few days....
smile.png
and on top of that we might have to run and pick up a foster dog(Irish Setter) in the evening in Ill if the rescue gets the transport set up- wasn't supose to happen until later in the month but the gal who runs everything was dignosed with breast cancer and her doctors want all her foster dogs out of her place so it's now a big shuffle
sad.png
Of course given that we have no spare time this will throw a wrench into things- I guess the dog we are getting has to be on crate rest due to heartworms and being on treatment, still will be a challenge.

how an hour can change everything.. After the rain Annie found one of the americauna all wet and looking like it was next to death's door.. she pu it in with the quail under the lamp.. It perked up a bit after a few minutes..

the quails and the peachick that were getting along so well with each other,, that honeymoon is over.. the quail were chasing and picking on the peachick, so he got to go back into the house.. his running mate, the turkey looked all sh!t on all by himself with the quails, so he is now back in the house also..he perked up immediately..

I mowed some weeds after the rain quit..

a couple of the male quails were making nice with the ladies..
On the 22nd they will be 8 weeks old and could start laying eggs. right now the boys seem to be ready, but the girls don't seem too interested..

I have to do some research about a quail feather plucker.. I want to build one, so I will try to find some ideas to steal first..

I have some ideas of what it should be like.. I don't know if anybody has made one already or not..

.......jiminwisc..........

I do really think that you will not be sorry using your carport to house your chickens. After that monster snowstorm that dumped on us last March, I was completely & utterly sold on mine. We could hardly get out to the chickens, but they were snug as a bug, completely oblivious to whatever mother nature was hurling at us. They had a warm, dry 20'x20' completely covered run to do with as they pleased, while we had 3 feet of snow across our driveway, and everywhere else, for that matter. DH may have been grumbling like a ....... putting it up in the fall, but he took it all back after that storm.

Elaine, how is Token Creek on the wheelchair accessibility? Any idea? As for the s. bash, I have no issues with Dane Co. if it is more convenient for everyone. Token Creek is fine with me. I do remember someone mentioning Mukwonago, so DH & I drove by Mukwonago County park on LO just west of downtown Mukwonago, and it looked really nice. They have some neat swimming areas (although I don't know if you'll want to swim in Oct.) & camping too. If you Google it & switch to maps & then the satellite view, you can see the terrain. Here are some links if anyone is interested.

Awesome find on the zucchini recipe, Cind! Now I almost wish I had some zukes this year.
lau.gif
But honestly, it does sound intriguing, and I am a sucker for a new recipe. I had made a chocolate zucchini cake years ago and it was to die for. I am going to have to search for it, but I am like TO: can't resist an interesting recipe book, so it'll take me awhile to find it, I'm sure.
roll.png
It did use a lot of zukes though, so that was a good thing, and you would never even guess there were any in it. It was sooooo rich. Darn it, I want some zukes now.
he.gif
Wait, 3:08 & 5:40? Go to bed, woman!

Bigz, awesome news on the peepers. Hope the other goes faster than the first.

DrH, have a blast at the reunion. Before my uncle got sick, he had a fam reunion every year in one of his barns. It was the highlight of my year. I sure miss him.

Thanks Amy. Those were my flowers. I am happy you liked them. They always make me smile to see them.

Oh, good for you, TO!!!!!!! I love spanferkle (I don't know about those parts) & head cheese too! (A professional, well-made head cheese).

Jim, I want to see you shave with that mower.......

And it doesn't sound like that turkey is a dummy. He knows where the good treatment is, and it isn't outside with the quail.

OK! Long day! A friend/co-worker of DH wanted to go for a bike ride today. They bought their bike a year after us & have twice as many miles on their machine, so they are a little hard core in the riding dept. Fine with me.
smile.png
We left around 10am, drove out to 106, to 12 to Cambridge, past Madison to Sauk City, down 78 past Black Earth & Mt. Horeb to New Glarus, and then headed back, the scenic route, of course, partially on 59. We got home around 7:30pm. They are from the Kenosha area, so we took them on a nice ride through the Kettle Moraine before we headed out, and they liked it so much, they want to bring their friends up to see it. WI truly has some wonderous landscape. It was a long day, but the scenery alone was worth it. And there were a ton of bikes out enjoying the weather also, so that was nice.
We hopefully will be taking another ride tomorrow with some of DHs band-mates, but it won't be quite as long, so hopefully I won't have nearly as much reading to catch up on.

Hey All,
What about Gibbs Lake http://www.co.rock.wi.us/park-info-a-maps/gibbs-lake
It
has camping in the horse parking area, with a few fire pits, and a permanent port a potty. A camping permit is needed from Rock Co...
A great picnic area and grills, heavy shade, very flat areas, and nice grass.
http://www.co.rock.wi.us/images/web.../park_gibbs_lake/gibbs_lake_park_brochure.pdf

There is also Magnolia Bluff http://www.co.rock.wi.us/images/web_documents/departments/parks/park_magnolia/magnolia_bluff_park_brochure.pdf
It
is also very FLAT at the picnic areas, both are only minutes from Evansville.

Terri, I thought of you when I saw this...

I am looking to create some extra room and have a few empty glass aquariums, a couple brand new Aqueon power filters, and a custom built tortoise pen. I am open to offers and would like to have these gone ASAP so feel free to shoot me an offer but please dont try lowballing me as I can always end up using this stuff. I have the following available:

Tanks:
1- 30 (36 x 12 x 16) glass aquarium- $20, with metal/screen top- $25
1- 37 (30 x 12 x 23) glass aquarium - $25, with screen top- $30
1- 55 (48 x 12 x 21) glass aquarium- $35, no cover

Filters:
1- brand new, in the box Aqueon 20 power filter - $15
1- brand new, in the box Aqueon 55 power filter- $35

Tortoise pen: This is a custom built wooden pen that was used for a Redfoot tortoise that simply outgrew it. The pen is wood and lined with a black rubber-like material to make cleaning easier. It measures 60inches in length, 32inches in width, and 24inches tall. No cover as cats, dogs, and little kids were not a concern with my animals. $85 or best offer.

I would like most, if not all, of this stuff gone ASAP so, again, feel free to make a REASONABLE offer. Text or call Kevin at 414-659-7767 if interested, I can send pics via cell phone as well. Pics on this post are of the tortoise pen. Thanks for looking.

Hi all!

Jim...Thanks for the heads up on the grinder... how much do they run and what else (besides body work) would I use it for? Got to justify the cost of one. How many times would I have to sharpen the mower blade to pay for it? Glad you got that other mower purrin'.... better than spittin' 'n hissin'!!! What about something on the order of a large salad spinner for quail? no... most are plastic... wouldn't last.
hmm.png

TO....I have a small tree in my yard (can't remember what it's called) that I think I'm going to try as a Bonsai. It's a little over a foot high and has lots of branches to work with. I think the people who had the house before us ran it over a few times!

Good for the lucky guinea!!!

H&R..... FUZZY BUTTS!!!!

dkv.... nice neat dog! see if you can get him to fold laundry!
lau.gif

CC.... My daughter made chocolate zucchini cake too... had some and it was good!
droolin.gif
She has soo many zuccs every year I don't think there is anything she hasn't tried putting them in!!! She says at least everyone gets their veggies!
gig.gif
She even sneaks them in the meatloaf! About the time.... kitten woke me up (slept about 45min.) and I couldn't get back to sleep!
he.gif

I don't care where the S. Bash is as long as it's not too NW of us.
Something got in the tomatoes last night or early this morning!
barnie.gif
I know it wasn't the chickens! BIG hunks nibbled out of some and the plants and the weeds in the area were all trampled down. When the chickens are in the garden they only scratch around where I just pulled weeds, or waddle through the weeds and plants.... not trample them! The yard has a 4' fence all around now but I suppose a deer could go over that. And the coons would just climb the nearest tree to get in.
he.gif
hu.gif
Oh well.

Night all! I hope!

Morning all,

To early for me to really reply to everyone. Not a morning person but just hopped on to catch up.
Mukwanago sounds good to me since if I come down for the bash I will be staying in Racine. Don't know if I want to drive 250 miles to Racine then over 100 to get to the bash. So my vote would be Mukwanago. No biggie, just thought I'd put in my two cents worth.

Got a good deal yesterday for all of my dogs vaccinations and deworming. Our local ARF Animal Resource Fund had a vaccination clinic at the local town hall. FOR $5.00 they vaccinated with Yearly booster, Rabies and gave a dose of dewormer !!! Can't beat that !!! Brought both Great Pyrenees and our Chocolate Lab. Butt Dog ( Buttons) got all of hers at the vet last month.
Then went to Menards and bought a bunch of fans !!!! Our CA still isn't working and yesterday almost killed me. The fans are $9.99 after a $3.00 rebate and today is the last day to get the 11% rebate on your entire purchase. That is also a mail in rebate. So bought 4 fans on two receipts, cause the limit was two. Two for us and two for chickens !!
Got caught in the downpour at Menards !!!
Gotta go, tons to do today, as usual !!! Have a good Sunday people !!!

good morning all,

CC It is sad when you have to guage your trips as to how many posts you will be behind when you get back home..LOL

Cind.. those grinders are not very high priced.. It varies naturally, with the brand you buy.. Most brands are OK>> I never buy Black and Decker, though.. I am very happy wih Delta.
Milwaukee is good. Porter Cable is good,. Do you have one of those tool warehouse stores close by?

IDK how much they charge for sharpening blades.. but having the grinder handy, and not having to wait days to get the blades back from the sharpener guy is worth any cost to me..

and for "in between" touch-up sharpenings, I do not remove the blades.. i just sharpen them on the "wrong" flat side..

the rider is especially hard to do.. I have to take the deck off and then pull the blades.. (when I do it the right way).. when I do it the wrong way, I just hoist the whole mower with the tractor bucket like a deer carcass and do my deed..

I wish I could post photos on byc.. it would save me a lot of descriptive typing..

Annie just got back from the swamp, er, I mean garden..
She picked half a row of beans.. lost her shoes a couple of times.
we had 1 1/2 inches of rain last night.. and since there is no ditch along the road after our culvert, the water spreads across our garden.. we are the last culvert down this hill.. the town is resurfacing our road.. If they do not dig a ditch, I am going to take the turning plow and dig my own.. It was never a problem until the past 3 years when I had to move the garden from the shaded area to where it is now.. Just the same,, It is not right that my property has to be a spillway for all the water that runs down this hill..

.......jiminwisc..........

rained here this morning and still looks to be dripping a bit yet. Woke up around 5 am to the rain and then started listening to see if our Irish Setter was having problems-as she now appears to have storm anxiety-only thing is that she didn't have problems until we had some loud thunder roll past. Of course we have some meds from the vet to see if that would help-it made things worse-instead of having a calming effect it did the opposite. She currently is crated while we are having breakfast and she won't stop barking......
sad.png

I hear you Jim about being the spillway for run off water, we too are the last culvert at the end of the hill and are right next to a creek so everything ends up by us. The good thing those is that the house was built on a higher area and our garden is at the other end of our property also on a higher area so it doesn't get flooded out. Of course we were told when we put our garden in the 1st summer we lived here that we shouldn't have put it where we did and we should have moved it closer to the house, this was told to us by someone who feels they know everything! Of course the spring and summer that everyone had all the flooding if we would have put our garden where this person thought we should have our garden would have been underwater and dead! I still chuckle about this.

I did make note of the 2nd get together date(October 1st) and we'll try hard to keep that date open-never know when someone decides to change our plans.

off to finish chores, have a good one!

DK) Sure I can adopt you, but you may have to tend to a crabby baby! Crabby babies are so exhausting and i'm just BEAT.

well the dude came and looked at our house. He was kinda a prick.
lol.png
He told me our house needed updated that it looks like it was from the 80s (well DUH it was built 30 odd years ago and when we moved in we lost our jobs!) He gives me a ball park price in a few days I guess. So thats dependant on what we do with this house we like. I have still been looking but theres not much else. Nothing with more land at least. We would like some more land, so we don't run into the trouble of "uh oh, if we only had 2 more acres..." but the land behind this house is a hay field owned by a huge farm down the road. I wonder if they would sell off a few additional acres should we want it later on...maybe if the price is right.

I have already picked out my fancy chickens I want (Orps, EEs and Marans/or Welsummers...I want blue, brown and dark brown eggs
wink.png
..)

We are going to state fair next Sunday and that is only going to make me want our little hobby farm more. But who knows! If I hear good news on our home, it will mean I can pick out my breeds, maybe meet farmers and yadda yadda.

I want to make strawberry lemonade jam today...but I know I best wait until hubby gets home. I start it, SOMEONE will decide to scream his little head off. Sigh.
