Raiquee my neighbor and I were talking the other day about my desire for more acreage and she said that awhile back (can't remember how long ago she said) the state passed something that prohibits selling off less than like 25 or 30 acres. Something about wanting to maintain the farm land. She said that unless the land had been divided prior to when they passed the bill it can't be divided into smaller acreage. Something to look into if you are looking for a place and hoping to pick up more property. Apparently the only ones who can purchase land in less acreage are the town governments. I think that is rotten, since there are a lot of folks who not only want to grow their own, but have small organic orchards, gardens etc and not a lot want to have to try to go organic on 30 acres. They aren't looking to get rich, just eat well and earn a living. I'd have rather seen them restrict mega confinement operations than deal a blow to the organic farms.
I'm still hoping that eventually I can purchase the lot from the lady next door that is 2/3 of an acre to add to my 1/2 acre... definately not as much as I was hoping for (but I'm the only one who wanted more acreage, so I lost out to the money maker, lol). But unless she's willing to cut her asking price in 1/2 I don't stand a chance. $20,000.00 is just WAY to steep for that little bit of land. I'd go 10, there's only a couple of trees to deal with, so it'd make a nice orchard/berry/garden spot and would produce more than enough for our family and I actually have several friends in Illinois waiting for me to get going so they can purchase my excess. Wouldn't make me rich, but would pay for the land in a few years.
