Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

FT - I love to hear about people giving old dogs a nice retirement:clap Butts sounds like a sweetheart.

I had a phoenix rooster quite a few years ago that I got from Murray McMurray. He was SO gorgeous. I still have some of his incredibly long tail feathers. (I didn't pull them out, I swear...they fell out)

I'd love to have another one, but then I think I'd have to order at least 25 birds. I think I have enough.

Well, still pooped out. Just got done feeding and watering all the silkie pens !!! AND I had a wonderful suprise !!! I thought I heard some peeping coming from a pen other then where the baby showgirls are. Then I looked and low and behold my lavender rooster that I just got a few months ago from NY that is paired up with two black hens and a buff hen had a tiny chick bopping around. So I lifted a hen and there was an egg that was smashed. I picked it up and the chick was inside. I peeled it open thinking I was going to find a dead chick and it was alive and well. All dried off and was either going to hatch out soon or was just napping !!! That one has kinds two tone coloring ????? My first Lavender split chicks !!!! I had candled the eggs last week and it didn't look promising but I left the eggs anyway !!! Good thing I did !!!

Well, going to go check on DH ET. He started digging holes for the pasture and I see he sunk a few rail road ties in.

Should be done in another year or two !!!!!

Seeing as he stops and starts projects !!! Never a dull moment around here !!

Have a good evening everyone !!! Hey Bigzio, what's for supper ?? I'm hungry !!!

Oh I am soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ticked...just typed a huge post about the guineas I now have in the bator and it went POOF! I went to capitalize an M and it went back to the start page...I dont think I can type all that again...it was so good too!

So I will just ask the question...Jim, when you float guinea eggs I had half that sink and the other half that float just under the water round side up. Do I remember you saying that you saw movement? Oh shi+ I am so mad that post disappeared! Terri O

Evening All....scrambled up a dozen eggs with bacon and onions...home made bread with home made wild grap jelly...heaven! Breakfast for super works here.

Cottonwood is in the same famiy as the poplar or aspen. The cottonwood can live past 100 years, while the poplar are short lived...maybe 20 to 30 years. The cottonwood also get a deep grain in their bark...unlike poplar. We have both here on the hill.

Did another 8 qts of pickels...told the neighbor that the next 5 gal pail is his. He wants to share them with his harem!

Hi all....oh man, I thought this was done for the year! So this morning I was letting the horses out so the guy who is working on my roof didnt have to deal with them "stealing" his ladder and tools...I heard some peeping coming from next to the silo. I take a look and find a little guinea-pure white. what!??? I take the bird down and pop it under a hen cause I have to get to work. On the way back to the driveway in amongst all the sh!t that DH has accumulated I see a very large guinea nest and the white guinea that I thought got eaten was there with 12 or so babies and about 25 unhatched eggs! I left for work....
So here is that disappearing post!

Got home at 3:30 and someone left a dozen ears of corn on my porch...back to the story--I go out to check on the eggs and the guineas and babies are NO WHERE but I hear peeping again! Then I see a little pied chick walking around. I grabbed it and went to check out the nest. THere is an alive baby trying to hatch. There are a bunch of eggs that are "heavy" and some that are light or sloshy. I took the bunch into the house. Put the guinea in the chick TV and got the incubator inside and warming. I put all the eggs in the warm water and turned my attention to the unhatched baby. Right away I notice all the fly eggs laid inside the hole! (I had seen another egg that the baby was dead and little flies were crawling all around inside the shell) So I open the shell a little after I get it warmed up. All the eggs were cold to the touch. I had to get the tweezers and pull off more shell. I used it to scrape and pick all the eggs/pupae (whatever they were it wasnt good!) out. I had to open more than I wanted cause I kept seeing more inside. OK I just hear LOUD peeping in the incubator and the baby is out! I took him out of there and picked a few more fly things off of it, gave him a rinse in warm water and now he can dry off. I am exhausted...just reliving this typing it is too much...those guineas are terrible! I am going to have to do a better job of finding the nests and getting the eggs under hens! Oh, I forgot to say that I went into the coop to find the other guinea from the morning and it is nowhere to be seen...maybe the mama picked it up? I still dont know where she and her family are...

OK so here is my question...probably for Jim. When you float test eggs what do you see? I had half that I picked up sink and the other half float round end up just under the water. What do you think? DH is gonna throw a flippin' bit[h when he sees the bator on the counter tomorrow! Oh yeah...how much can I sell guineas for on CL?

OMG---I was signing off and here was my post! Yes I DO love you Firefox!
Now I am going to make something to eat before it disappears again...I think BigZ has the right idea...eggs it is! Terri O

TO: when I float eggs, they bob around in the water like a nibble on the hook.. sometimes some sink.. that could mean that the chick has pipped through the inner membrane and is filling up the whole egg.. I toss the ones that float but do not move..

the guinea lad (Marlene) called me tonight.. she said that she was hungry for egg salad .. so she boiled up a bunch of guinea eggs.. when she peeled them, she found 2 chicks .. That was the end of her craving for egg salad.. she said now she hasn't eaten an egg for over two weeks.. LOL

I rode on the lawn mower for over an hour today.. I cut grass that would make any farmer proud.. After the hay dries, I will have to recut most of it at a lower setting..

I even took the tractor and pulled some more roots along the road. and now that the ground is dry, I got the ground leveled off next to the neighbors' lawn..

then I tossed a bunch of the newly cut grass/weeds into the bucket and gave the quail and turkey pens a treat.. the loose chickens/birds got to clean out the bucket..

TO, guineas make lousy mothers.. If you can, and want to save the keets, take them away from the mother.. within a week she will have only 3 or 4 left out of a dozen..

FT, that hen might be an India Blue.. My neighbor always describes the feathers as that color.. Still $45 and a long drive ?

The cost of gas really has a direct bearing of what I do lately..
When we lived in Rochester, Minn and didn't have a pot to pi$$ in or a window to throw it out of, we could always just go for a
ride..

I always used to say, that I would feel rich, when my deposit slips ran out before the checks did.. Now I say if I could just have enough money to not bother about the price of gas..
Like all of you cheeseheads.. LOL

Annie is getting me up at 6AM so I can get to Menards by 6:3o.
They are having a TV sale and she thinks we need a new one.. Just because it blinks picture/black/pic/blk/pic/blk for 15 minutes after you turn it on.. Anbody want a free 36 inch TV that needs a little repair ?? come and get it..

I better get to bed.. ...........jiminwisc.......

Evening All,

So here is one for ya horse loving folks, a dunskin filly, buckskin/dun color...
http://madison.craigslist.org/grd/2541879230.html

I now have 4 hens broody in 3 nest holes, I will get pics of them.. they are a HOOT!!
I think I will have a TON of chicks.. well I at least hope so.
So I am wondering if I should let the duck out with her adopted duckling to go hang out with the geese...
I really need to find them a home...
Well anyway, got DH his b-day present, an NCO sword, he has always wanted one since being in the Marines.

Have a great night

Thanks for that info, DrH. I hear you on the clumps of grass everywhere. Our yard too.

Gaelio, glad to hear your roo is doing good, & your 1st time mommy. I was ROTFL reading about your story about Deedles! Too funny! Guess you need to set a curfew for her to be inside by.

TO, yes, poplars & cottonwoods are in the same family. I have both growing here. Poplars are messy trees, & sprout up everywhere only to die a few years later.

Oh, nevermind, I see Bigz beat me to it. Listen to him, not me.

Didn't get nearly as much done today as I wanted & have 3 busy days in a row coming up, so I'll prolly just be lurking. Have a lovely weekend and enjoy this beautiful weather!

Hi All!

H&R... Up to 2years to tell? Wow they must mature slow.
roll.png

Dr.H.... Yep my roos where having a "crow off" this evening! Wish I could put the 3 of them in the chicken tractor and fatten 'em up a bit more but I'm afraid that close there would be cock fights!
hu.gif
I was going to get some meaties this year too, but I ran out of places to put them! Oh well, maybe next year. DH is starting to think like us.... he's looking for perspective coops!
gig.gif

Gael... I hope Deedles is "fixed" or that may have been yowls of passion!
roll.png
Glad mom and the chicks are doing good! I was worried about Jasmine too, but she's done great!

TO... Thanks about DS#1.... My biggest worry about him living here is I don't know if I would be strong enough to help him if he needs it.
idunno.gif
The house it's self only needs some minor modifications and the state or county will probably do that. At least I know he'll get fed! He says sometimes the only meal he gets is his "Meals on wheels"
somad.gif

What ever you decide to plant for trees DON'T get a locust! Great shade but sooo messy! Especially in the fall tiny leaves everywhere! Welcome to the "Poof Post" Club!

raiq... Happy (late) Birthday!!! Hope you enjoyed your day!

Dornes.... Looks like it will be a very nice coop! Just right! 'Till chicken math takes hold!
