Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Thanks WCC

I just hate to see Donkeys or in this case Mules needing homes. Sad part is someone is going to get him home and not know what to do with him and he will go from home to home. Mules and donkeys are so misunderstood !!!
I wish I could afford another mouth to feed but I can't !! I would just let him hang out with JJ my rescued donkey !!
love.gif
It has taken a long time but we can catch him now, halter him and lead him. He still shakes but is 1000 times better then when we got him. He sure isn't shy though when it comes to treats and apples !!!! He's right there with the rest of them. Gosh I love my donkeys !!!
love.gif
I'd have a donkey rescue if I had the money and physical ability to handle all kinds of situations !!
Oh what the heck as long as I'm at it I would have a rooster rescue too !!! And a draft horse rescue and ....................
th.gif

Right now I'm sitting on the bed with a showgirl hen laying on a towel next to me. She has wry neck very bad. She's had it on and off for quite some time. She has a very vaulted skull and I think that may have something to do with it.
So before I would have DH put her down I decided to try some things. So far she seems to be improving. I'm giving her vitamin E, scrambled eggs (high in selenium which helps absorb he Vitamin E), a tiny piece of Vitamin B Complex and Calf Mana pellets (lots of good vitamins in them)
She gobbles down the eggs and pellets when I put them in her mouth. She is getting stronger and holding her head up alot more.
She is one of the prettiest partridge showgirls I have. She has a beautiful topknot !!!
love.gif
If she pulls thru this I think I will have a very special friend !!
It kind of reminds me of my brother who had CP (Cerebral Palsy) She will be just fine and then all of a sudden she will have the jerky movements that she can't control. She will drink water out of the dish and can have control of that then all of a sudden she will spasm out and down goes her had etc. She sleeps in a box right next to the bed and I've been checking on her all day and night. She is improving so we shall see.

I say my brother had CP because he passed away 9 yrs ago at the age of 51 yrs two months after both of my parents were murdered. The stress of the murders took a real toll on him and his asthma and he had a heart attack on St Patricks day at one of his best friends house. She had cats that he was allergic to and he kept taking more asthma treatments. We buried him on his 51st birthday on March 22. He Loved his friends and family and we thought he would like to have his friends all together on his birthday. He had a special card holder made so he could play cards because he couldn't hold them. He could beat anybody !!!! He played bridge with the ladies and poker with his pastor !!!
lau.gif
RIP Tim Miss you
love.gif
He was a Card !! Pun intended Brother !!
hugs.gif

Sorry, got caught up in the moment there. Anyway, so guess I had better add a place at my Rescue for special needs chickens too while I'm at it hey?
sad.png

Anyway, somehow we've all of a sudden are getting flys in the house. Must be the cold weather !! DH Chuck is in the other room swatting them !!!! Poor Butt Dog is next to me laying with her butt touching the chickens butt, real cute but Butt Dog is shaking like a leaf !!! She trembles when you start hitting flys !!! All you have to do is pick up a paper and start to roll it up as a swatter and she is gone !!! We have never never ever hit her (even when she has gotten in the garbage)(one of her favorite past times) (or when she has managed to dismantle a poor chick that had died).
I rescued her when she was 9 months old and they must have swatted her or ??? !! She is by my side 24/7 but if I swat one fly she is gone in the other room by DaDa for a few hours !! Poor Butt Dog. Life is so tuff for her !! Yeah right, she gets a fresh cooked egg every day with her normal dog supper. What more can a dog ask for !!
idunno.gif

Well, anyway, sorry for the long post. Forgot I was on a forum and not emailing !!!!
hide.gif

I must be hungry !!! Wish DH would quit chasing flys and go get the pizza from the basement already !!!! I would do it but I'm spending quality time with my showgirl !!!

Hmmm. Never had elk before. I wouldn't mind trying it someday.
Tomski, I'm sorry about your roo also. That was one from FT, correct? Well, don't worry then. She has plenty more where that came from.

Seatbelts in the shower. Just when you think you've heard it all.

TO, you simply must go around & take pics of all the "handiwork" for us.

I hope Annie feels better real soon.
Awwww, Deb. She's so darn cute! I want one!
Robin, some years you'll wish you had all those apples. I know I am this year. I usually always have a freezer full of gallon ziploc bags of peeled, sliced apples for pies & crisps in a jif. Mmmmmm........ hot apple crisp with cinnamon baking on a cold winter evening. Nothing quite like it. I can applesauce too, and pear sauce. Good stuff. Not many apples this year for us, but lots of pears, thankfully.
DrH, epi pen. Hope L is ok. Food allergies are a b*tch & a half.
Thanks again for the Bigz update, Suzie, and for the salsa recipe! It sounds super tasty. I must try it out.
smile.png

Finally done reading & now it's way past my bedtime. Figures. At least we got quite a bit done outside today, despite my head wanting to explode. DH even got the garage cleaned out. Yippee!
Sweet dreams, all!

ETA, I sure hope the mule finds a good, understanding home, and I'm really hoping your showgirl recovers, FT.

good evening all, I just might be the last post for t he day..?

the 17th is our anniversary.. we spent it having quality time togerher,, freezing corn.. I picked about 25o ears and we got 27 pints put into the freezer.. tomorrow we will finish up.. we need to have 40 pints to top off what is in the freezer.. daughter #1 and Annie's sister came to help.. tomorrow they will be back and then we will do some for each of them, too..

I picked a bunch of corn for the birds, and gave them 2 five gallon buckets full of cobs from the freezing operation..

the quail dicided to start to hatch .. there are 16 new ones in the TV and now I see one in the hatcher..

the peahen did not come back.. yeah, that was one expensive mistake on my part.. se lavee.. it was a pied hen.. I was going to pawn her off on FT anyway.. the two in the pen are not making any effort to become more social , yet.

I like mules.. too bad I am not set up to have one or two.. i don't think Annie would let me have a mule or a horse.. Maybe if I got rid of all the birds, I could have one.. ? or two ? there is the matter of mule math, then.. the neighbor lady has 20 of them.

good night.. ........jiminwisc.........

Jim.... you didn't really think you'd be last did you?
lau.gif

So much to do! I keep trying to get to bed early .... and it winds up later and later!
rant.gif

Wow... the losses seemed to keep going.... guess it's part of having a flock. Thought I lost a guinea Fri. night.... come morning it was waiting to get in the coop!
bow.gif
Think it spent the night in the neighbors pines.

I only knew one mule, she was OK, a good ride actually. Sure hope he finds a good home. BTW... FT...The best ride I had was a rescue my uncle had. A Belgium - quarter horse cross. Poor horse didn't come out even! LOL quarter horse front and Belgium back! Big wide A$$! But oddly a smooth ride! I would ride her bear back and I could lean back a dose off! Her only fault was she didn't like the bridge.... had to blindfold her and lead her across.

Seeing Eye Suzie.... good job! Hope your actually reading all this to Bret! LOL Maybe you'll start making your own posts too!

With Carol's internet down maybe someone else should set up the park? Only got 2 weeks unless we just forget it this year.
hmm.png

My daughter came by today and relived me of a box of sweet potatoes... but left me a bushel and a half of apples... unsprayed ones so need allot of cutting around the worm holes! LOL Lots of scraps for the chickens! I'm freezing the scraps for them for the winter. She said she tried to give some to a neighbor but she didn't want the 'cause of the worms. got to thinking, if our ancestors were as picky or squeamish as some people are now days... they would have starved! As I say... "Flour sifters weren't invented to make the flour fluffy!"

I know I was going to say more but very tired...Must sleep!...Night!

Dang it was just about done with a post and touched some button and it disapeared. So Good Wet Morning All! FT you brought it on yourself
lol.png
SES [Seeing Eye Susie for Jim] maybe I missed it but what did the Dr. have to say? Hope it was good news

Cind do you ever get a full nights sleep? Have to run to Rapids today to drop off the stupid box [puter] and as long as I'm there might as well stop at TSC and get a few things.
roll.png
Better get the shrimp dishes done before L gets home so she doesn't have to touch them. CC thanks for the reminder yup api pen. Poor Brent will just have to listen to the game today.
hit.gif
At least he can hear but suspect that his listening isn't all that good? Would like to get back to the camper next weekend for the pack/bears game. The watering hole that we go to has an owner that's a huge Bears fan he has tape on the bar and you have to sit on one side or the other depending on who your rooting for. Man the driveway looks nice! Found out some 9N's didn't have a brake interlock and some did. It is what it is. Keep thinking about that tractor and what I could do with it.
hide.gif
Need to get eggs in me to get some steam up. Have a good one!

Howdy everyone!

Sorry I've been so scarce. After my daughter's wedding , and my trip to Boston to see my eye doc (everything checked out great), I've been back at school.....doing the work I get paid for! My personal life seems to disappear during the school year.

Anyhow, everyone's talk about putting up food is making me feel guilty already being on the computer! I've got to finish stemming the wild grapes to make jelly, need to pick the maters for sauce, and yes, I've got an overabundance of apples, tool

The only bright spot in all this work is that the ducks are barely laying any eggs, so I didn't have to make the trip to Madison yesterday to deliver some.

My little call duck that I got at the bash this summer is the bright spot in my flock, and the noisy spot! what a character she is! I haven't clipped her wings, because when she does fly, she sticks around. And she still follows me, and does her crazy quack everytime she sees me come outside.

When are where is this October bash? I wanna come if I can!

Vicky

maybe she will wander back

over cast here but not raining as of yet, hopefully at 1 pm it will be nice out- the 4-H kids are working on the homecoming parade float for Friday's parade.

made crepes for breakfast this am, the only one who didn't want to try them was DS(6) so he ate cereal
idunno.gif

have a good one!

Good Sunday morning! Why in the world did that little boy NOT want to try crepes H&R? You did tell them they were French Pancakes didnt you? Hmmm--maybe you didnt have enough whipped cream on them?
hugs.gif

Do DrH...is Susie allergic to strawberries AND shrimp? In you post you said you and the cats were eating shrimp but then said something about strawberries giving her a reaction? I know more than a few folks who have to carry around an Epi pen...more for bee stings though. Sounds like you are having a really good time with Donny's tractor...are you SURE he wont sell it to you? Maybe you will have to start paying rental fees...

THanks for being "Seeing Eye Susie" Susie! And I agree with whomever said it, you'd better be reading all these posts to the "blind one!" I think I am going to make your salsa recipe today when the people are at the Packer game...the fam always goes to a friend's place to watch cause he has a bigger TV--and better snacks. I like it cause they are gone for a few hours! So I will be tweaking your recipe to include some hot peppers from the garden as well as cilantro and probably some cumin. Salsa is one of the few things that I can eat so I make it how I like it!
ya.gif
I probably will eat half of it fresh and can the rest. I have heard of adding the tomato paste so it thickens better...never have done it but I will give it a try. One year I made my salsa out of the "spoilings" that came out of the seed and skins hopper of the squeezo after making tomato sauce. I added a few more tomatoes and the seasonings and when we opened a jar we added a little can of tomato sauce to it...it was really good salsa! Of course the chickens were mighty disappointed that they didnt get to have all the skins and seeds!

My grapes that came down with the wind last week have made wine (or something) in the pan...I cooked them and then took out the vines...there is just juice left but not very much...not sure what I can (or could) do with it...maybe I will just add it to the chicken bucket...sigh. I had a bunch of tomatoes in a pan on the kitchen floor...not a great place for them I guess. THey have steadily become less. I found out that the dogs snag one out of there every time they walk by! We have 6 dogs...guess I will be out picking again to day...then I will make them into something right away!

I feel like I could have slept another few hours this morning...lots of walking at the State Horse Show yesterday! It was a disappointing time for dd19 though...the last show for her 4H career and she did squat! Even her "professional" pics didnt turn out well! We didnt even buy one for her! I got a couple pics of her...nothing spectacular.

Got 5 quail out of the incubator yesterday and another today...I really wish I would have written down the number of eggs I added every day....next year I will do that along with writing down the ones hatching! The ones that are a few weeks old are now looking like porcupines! Their pin feathers are coming in like crazy! It is funny that the new ones that I add are not picked on by the big ones at all...everyone says they are aggressive but I am not finding that with mine. Good thing, I really dont have room for more chick TVs!

Well- I guess I can sign off for now. I have to send an email to Calphalon because one of my frying pans has a very loose handle. DH says even if he puts seatbelts on it, it wont help....
gig.gif

Have a fantastic day! Terri O

ETA: Happy Anniversary Jim and Annie--how many years of wedded bliss have you attained?
ALSO: Maybe that mule is really a Hinney? I hear they have bad attitudes like that...

big_smile.png
Our trees didnt do to well this year but the neighbors did, she gets free eggs when ever she wants and she shares her goodies with us.
I always read everyones post and by the time I go to post I forget what I read. Im hoping Bigz has a speedy recovery (and happy he has a seeing eye Susie lol)

Good Sunday Morning!

Sun is out (for the time being) and it's a relatively mild morning. Got SIX eggs yesterday!

Yep, unfortunately the Rooster killed was one of two I got from FT. The lone one seems to be getting along alright but is definitely at the bottom of the pecking order. I think I'll stick with one Roo for the 9 girls... Hopefully he'll grow some more and become King of the Coop.

I cleaned the dead guy up and harvested the breasts and thighs - I didn't bother with getting water heated...etc. So I basically cleaned him like I do with Partridge. It was sad but at least I will "try" and enjoy him on the grill. I'm still a bit bummed about it, these Roosters were pretty neat looking and were the friendliest of the flock. The surviving boy is pretty frazzled by recent events and is a bit skidish right now.

As of right now, I've decided NOT to use the storm windows on the run.... although that may change. Today, I'm gonna work on the roof of the run. Gonna see If I have enough lumber to actually start framing it in. It's 10' wide with a two foot drop - So if I can get it framed in, I can cover it with a couple of taught tarps - snow SHOULD slide off it this winter. Next Spring/Summer, I'll put a metal roof over the whole thing. I'd like to metal roof it right now but just don't have the extra 600 bucks laying around. A well installed tarp will just have to do.

I've been wondering about extra light now that the days are getting shorter. I've read that keeping the coop with 12 hours of light will keep egg production up. How much will it drop if I DONT play mother nature and not install lighting? It'll be easy enough, I have 60amp service that runs to the shed where the coop is...

Either way, it's gonna be an easy "putzing" around day - for two reasons:

1. I'm a bit sore from cutting, splitting, loading, unloading, and stacking a little over a cord of wood yesterday
2. I'm planning on parking my butt in front of the T.V. at noon, with a cold beer at my side and watching the Packers whoop up on Carolina... LOL

have a GREAT day everyone!
