Good morning everyone! Welcome to all the new folks (or ones finally speaking up!
) The duckling I brought in is doing fine this morning...if it warms up sufficiently today I will reunite him with his mom and sibs. He's looking plenty comfy lounging under the heat lamp....really dont want a duck inside though...already did that--
Face it--I really dont need another duck AT ALL but I couldnt just let him die ya know...?
So this morning I get up and there is a very large man standing in my kitchen! I guess DH was waiting for his brother too...they are going down to Joplin to finish up and fetch all the stuff back home. He didnt want to sit down...said he'd be sitting for 11 hours in the truck. YUCK! The worst part is DH is the smallest one and he will be driving and one of the very large guys will have to sit in the backseat. It is only an extended cab not a king cab...
GTGMC...(got to get more coffee)
Let the dog out--it is NICE out there! 42 and SUNNY! Too bad I have to go to work today...I will miss the warmest part of the day.
FT I had a house roo for three winters. He went outside during the summers in his own pen with a doghouse to sleep in. He was the reason I found this site! That seems soooo long ago. There are stories on here about him too. Charlie the house chicken...I will look in the files and see if I still have his pick...nope, musta deleted it when I was "cleaning!"
So while I was away scrapping the DH put away lawn furniture and took the top off of the gazebo. Didnt store it like I would like but...at least it is off for the winter! This is the first one that has lasted all summer without blowing down and getting all bent up! I think they must be making them better or stronger or something. I cant imagine that our summer was less volatile than normal?...
I remember the first time I swore in front of my parents....I was looking through the newspaper for articles on Chile (we had a country assigned to us in Spanish class and were to bring in any artlicles....no internet then!) I said, "Every time I look in this Dam^ paper there are no articles!" I just stopped and looked over the paper at my Mom...she didnt say anything...but I was scared to death! Far cry from the kids now...OMG--the mouths on them! I know that when my kids were younger they swore outside the house...but that was never allowed at home. There are other words--get a thesaurus!
Well there was a ton I wanted to reply to...oh yeah--my Dad said you can dig horseradish in any month that doesnt have an "R" in it. S I guess that means dig in the cooler weather? We have some growing by the garage that DH put in years ago...I dont thik=nk it is there anymore though...choked out by weeds I imagine. I think I remember that you are supposed to dig fresh and when you are nearly out you dig out another one? Let me check my "wisdom book."
OK--newly wise on the ways with horseradish...Young leaves in spring are good on a sandwich. Harvest September until frost or just leave in the ground cause they keep best that way. Never heat--makes it lose it's flavor. TO grind it tearlessly: py vinegar in a blender jar and add pieces and grind. Keep adding pieces until the vinegar barely covers the ground stuff and pour into jars. Baby food size or half pints recommended. You can store harvested roots in damp sand at 40*--keeps 4-6 months. Plant 4" deep and to get straight roots; dig off top 3" of soil and cut off any side shoots then replace soil. Any litte piece of root will make a new plant so line planting area or plant in a place it doesnt matter if it goes rampant!
There you go! All (and probably more) than you ever wanted to know about the stuff!
While reading I also found out that you can eat the young shoots of hops like asparagus...I might try that next year! Also learned that the light green colored one is the female plant and the darker one the male...such a great book.
Well, better get moving now...have a great day! Later! Terri O
ETA: Ha Jim--thanks for the consideration!
THere was something else I was...oh yeah, now I remember...a vacuum seal wont work for potatoes or any fresh veggie cause they give off gasses that need to escape or they will rot. THe bags that Annie ordered are probably the kind that let veggie gasses out but not in. I got some cheapsish ones at the DG and they seem to work quite well! THe only roblem is that you can rinse and reuse and the fam keeps throwing them out!
