Ken, my thoughts f the cold north ?? Move SOUTH !!!
buckwheat will grow well in just about any soil.. If you plant some and then plow it under , it will enrich the soil and loosen it.
I planted half of my garden with it. when the seeds were ready I let the birds in to harvest it.. I was surprised , the ducks were especially fond of it.. when they got it all eaten, I plowed the plants under.. there was a noticeable difference in the lightness of the soil on the buckwheat end..
a lot of books recomend that you plow it under as a green "manure" before the seeds are set..
one thing I really liked about it,, it did not let any other plants grow,, including weeds.. mine got about 3 feet tall..
I just rototilled the garden and hand broadcast the seeds. try to get the seeds about 3 to 4 inches apart.. Not critical, though..
it takes a large patch of wheat, or buckwheat, to make much difference in the feed bill..
