good evening, I forgot what I posted so forgive any repeats.

I started late outside ,but gave 'er heII and got a lot done. two trips to the burn pile.. moved things around, stored the lawnmowers and tiller.. put a few things under the lean-to, moved the baby turkeys to the inside brooder pen.

. turned 3 turkeys and the baby peacock loose.. they didn't want to go back into the big pen, so I chased them into the lean-to pen..
I have 4 lean-to areas attached to my garage.. still I run out of space..

one of the peacocks was standing on the ridge of the garage and serenading the sunset.

and just for funsies, I graded the driveway again.. gotta play with those tractors whenever we can, eh DrH ?

I did not put the plucker away.. we are going to use it one more time.. Dorothy brought the last rooster back.. a white one,, I did not see it yet, but he is runing around somewhere.. and about 15 lavender guineas are going on a short trip to the canning factory.. no more room in the freezers..

HI ALL

Jim....You got to keep posting to keep us kids in line!
lau.gif
Besides, you would be missed too much! What kind of light do you leave on for your birds?

Elaine....Sorry for your loss, could have been something else wrong with her you didn't notice. I have a Bantam Turken that has RIR roost mate. It's so cute, they were raised together and the RIR will even put a wing over Sissy if she's cold.
love.gif

tiki... Hope you all the icky out of your birds! I was worried about one of my hens and her crop. After watching her and feeling it a couple of weeks I decided she was just a little piggy and kept filling it up fast!
roll.png
Good luck with the roo!.... and your son too!

FT... As I remember in the 70's we just used "RIT" dye for feathers. Put them in a mesh bag (fine netting) and boil them like cloth. I think I used vinegar in the water too but not sure. Rinse well and put the dyed feathers in a pillow case, roll up the end and safety pin it tight. Throw it in the dryer and dry on low heat. Sorry about your little guy
sad.png
Have fun with your new goats and birds! *I just looked this up (edited).... http://www.ritdye.com/diy-projects/odds-ends/dyed-feathers They say dry with no heat but our dryer had a low heat setting and that's what I used.

BigZ.... Glad you had a nice dinner! I do like to go out now and then, but it all depends on where and why. Sometimes DH brings home crab legs as a treat for me!
droolin.gif
He can't eat shell fish so I have them when he won't be home for super. Much cheaper than going out for them! May you have many more special dinners together!

TO... Little Turk is going to be the weirdest looking chicken on the farm!
lau.gif

Well, a few weeks ago I got a "Packer Brisket" and let it age in the frig. I cut it into 3 parts yesterday (to you all) and we had a real good roast last night! I just did the "pickling" for another 1/3 so we will have sauerbraten next week!
droolin.gif
Haven't made it all year!

The guinea is back!!!
ya.gif
As I hoped it was probably at the neighbors and when it got dark it was stuck on the other side of the fence. I've been trying to listen to the calls and I know the white one is a girl and one of the dark ones is a boy, going to have to figure out how to mark them. Storkey still thinks it's a guinea! Even runs like the guineas!

This weekend looks like a "wood" weekend. DH has more free wood to pick up and I have to collect more fallen branches for kindling. I also have to start sawing up those oak planks and maybe start on the pallets if DH starts breaking them up. Running out of places to put wood! I don't know where the other people who had this place put it all... maybe in the shed... where the chickens are? I hope we get some nice big chunks soon. I don't like how small (around) what DH bought is. Burns too fast!
barnie.gif
I guess most of the people the guy sells wood to use it for fireplaces not heating.
roll.png
I talked to him about it, we got at least one more load coming from him so I'm hoping it's bigger chunks.

Well, Bed time! Night all!

good chilly morning, all the birds are out and they think it is grand.. the geese are bathing in their ice encrusted water..

who on here has cockatiels ? we have a female, (pretty sure).. Annie found a lady who has a nice male.. she has agreed to buy it, but whe is putting off going to get it.. I am nothing like that.. If I find something I want to buy, I go imediately, before the people sell it to somebody else..

H&R, I see you have cukoo marans ? do you have hens and roosters ? I will be looking for fertile eggs next spring.. will you have some to spare ?

H&R, No, my sister does not play the organ in church, or anywhere else for that matter.. All of her grandchildren are very musical; from her son's family.. in fact Jackie was invited to play the organ at the Vatican in Rome.. (which she did)

today is my last chance to finish cleaning the yard.. I have a little scrap metal.. not enough to warrant a trip to the junk yard.. maybe I will just give it to Russell, he always collects metal..

H&R , I don't make any special effort to use any particular light in the hen house.. whatever I have in the brooder serves for the chicken's light also.. If there are no young birds in the brooders, then I just use a 60 Watt regular bulb, or one of those curley bulbs. (which are no good for anything else)..

I guess I have some frantic starving birds out there, according to Annie.. Aren't birds always starving?

I have to make a trip to Menard's for another tarp.. after I stack bales around the one big pen, I want to cover the whole thing with a tarp to keep the bales as dry as I can..

The guineas are very happy with the new location of the pens.. Perfect launching pads for getting into the pine tree..

OK people, I know it is frosty out there today, but get out from under those quilts and get at it.. daylight is burning..

I watched Grapes of Wrath again.. good movie..

Good morning! Thought I'd drop in with a quick note while I'm drinking my first cup of coffee. Thanks everyone for your kind words about my little silkie loss. I haven't had chickens very long (it's just now a year) and this Spring was my first hatching experience. I only kept 3 from the hatches - the little roo Carol now has and my 2 silkie girls whom I was very attached to as they made me smile and laugh every day. It'll be okay, that's life -- and if there's any good to come of this, having just 4 chickens makes me legal for Madison. I just have to work on not being so sentimental. (Oh, I do have 3 fullsized chickens & 1 bantam & they usually all sit together on the same roost.) Come Spring I'll try to hatch some more if I can still get some eggs. I've decided too, that I want to get (or hatch eggs to get) a hen that lays those dark brown eggs as I enjoy seeing those so keep me in mind....

Does anyone what that Extreme Couponing show? I've seen it a few times and have been amazed at how much they get for so little and I admire their organization (of coupons & their stash). I don't like when they clear the shelves and are being greedy and I personally don't see the need to "hoarde" as much as they do. I mean, does anyone really need 20+ deoderants stashed away? Anyhow, the show got me thinking about whether or not I could save more $ by incorporating some of their strategies so I started looking into it. It's a bit overwhelming, lots of info to absorb and a new way of thinking/shopping, so for now I am just working on learning the ends and outs of Walgreens couponing system (where I never used to shop but do shop there now as they have the best and most deals if you can learn their couponing system) and reading about grocery store savings, but haven't pursued that much as it can become overwhelming. Anyhow, this whole new mindset has been kinda fun and exciting as I LOVE saving money by spending less. (I've been a thriftstore shopper all my life.) I always thought I was as frugal as could be, so being able to save more on groceries is exciting especially when prices are just skyhigh these days. (Man was I disgusted when I saw Kraft Mac & Cheese [standard box] is now up to $1.29!! Unbelieveable!! I'm not buying it at that price!) So, I've adopted their mantra of "buy nothing unless it's on sale or your have a coupon." Anyhow, I just have to brag a little as yesterday I scored my best deal yet at a grocery store -- I bought 16 cans of Progresso soup (on clearance & with coupons) for $6.90!! Woot!! SIXTEEN CANS of soup that I really like!! Anyhow, I thought I'd share this info because there are so many like-minded thrifty people on this forum. If you're interested in looking into this further, my favorite website that I check daily is http://thekrazycouponlady.com. They are the website that lays out what to do and how to do it successfully and is the most clearly written/understandable....

Hey, TO, thanks for the reminder of Flylady. I used to get the daily messages but never did any of them & my house was always cluttered and still is. But I've now signed up again and I am very motivated to try to get in the groove as I'm tired of the clutter & the mess... Thanks for the reminder that Flylady exists!

Well, I must go shower and find some energy to tackle all I have planned to do. Hope you all have a great day & enjoy the warmth and sunshine! (Sorry to hear you Northerners are looking at snow next week - scared the bejesus out of me as I still have a lot of outside work to do, so I doublechecked our forecast (Madison area) and THANKFULLY none is on our horizen YET! Whew!!)

Elaine

Morning all! Good thing I hit the refresh button before I posted....as usual Jim's message had posted just as I was going to type...the weirdness continues. Then I got a call from Carol--she is on the run as usual! We are going to try to get together for a ride later today. Her DH has a gaited horse that is the same kind as mine...only his actually gaits!
lau.gif
I will see how big the difference is...might be trying to sell another horse!
The sun is out and the sky is blue!

Now I too just need to find some energy to do something. Need to move more birds around and make a few more cookie tin water heaters. Either that or I will be breaking ice out of buckets all winter...dont want to do that! The pond needs some scooping and then I want to drop some netting over it so the leaves dont all get in the water again like last year...prolly should drop the breather in there too so all the frogs and turtles can survive the winter...I hate finding those bloated frogs floating in the spring! Of course the garden isnt cleared out yet...I let the Blues in there yesterday to start cleaning up the dropped tomatoes and stuff. THey were having a blast! The brussels sprouts dont seem to be too much of a temptation right now...the book says they can stay out until they are snow covered so I guess we will just continue to eat them off the stem! After I blanch and freeze them they dont taste as good anyhow...anyone else have another method?

Jim and Elaine--I have my Cuckoo Marans separated and hopefully will have good eggs in spring also. THe boys are from H&R and the girls are from Hurley. (who is doing fine BTW...got an email from her a few weeks ago. Very busy--more schooling I think) THe girls had been laying some wonderfully dark eggs....

One more cup and I am off to work outside! LOL--Terri O who wishes you a safe and productive day!

Elaine- I am a couponer and clearance shopper and love getting a good deal. not sure if they have Rainbow foods/Copps or Pick n save near you, but today is double, double coupons. Means if you spend min of $25, you can use up to 10 coupons for up to $1 each. So can save 420 of the 25 if you do it right. they have an awesome deal on cereal right now and we eat alot of it, so going to check it out today!

Say- do you guys with silkies ( and I know that there are alot of you) keep them outside in the winter or keep them in an barn or inside place? I need to work with mine to convince them to go in the coop at night. They dont like to climb the ramp to inside very often.

Otherwise looks like a nice sunny day. We are doing big cleaning inside and then going to run around outside for a while! Have a great day!

Cold morning is right, cause our heater is out again!!!
barnie.gif
DH says its an easy fix, just a loose wire. Well than fix it already! Hunter was freezing cold this morning, despite the blankets. So everyone is in heavy layers and blankets abound. I had all 3 of us under the heated blanket for a bit. DH comes home around noon and hes gonna fix it then.

Kids kept me up all night. Sigh. They go to visit Uncle today into tomorrow so tonight after work I can catch some sleep, and its daylight savings, so I should be able to ENJOY it this year lol. Kids don't get daylight savings time
wink.png

Made Pepper Venzun (instead of pepper steak) for dinner yesterday...and venzun stroganoff the day before. Trying to use up last years deer before DH gets another one. I only got 2 packs left, so he better hurry up!!

Started xmas shopping already. Got part DH's gift, and also the vanilla beans for the vanilla extract i'm making people. Gonna start buying for the boys soon. Doing everything online this year, stores get too crazy and I just don't enjoy going and fighting off shopaholics.

Congratz biggz on the anni...

Good Late Morning today!
frow.gif

O wow the sun just peeked out for a second there. I hope we get it back. It is somewhat breezy and without the sun somewhat cold. I need to force myself back out there to finish the mini coop. It is really shaping up nicely, looks like a mini log cabin with cedar siding. A real rustic looking thing. I probably wont be able to stain it this year though. Too late. I was hurting yesterdayand this morning from all the work I did yesterday.

Cindlady I am so glad you got your guinea back
ya.gif
Good News!!! Heres hoping you get some big wood your next load.
fl.gif

I wish I could remember more. It seems I have to go back and reread to remember the comments I was going to make.

kristip~ about the silkies. Mine stay outside and seem to get around fairly well but they do sleep on the floor. I havent see any of them roost. I have to watch them (one in particular) so they dont wander off and get lost. But if they are in a pen that is fine (except for my esape artist). I think silkies do fine in cold weather. But my coop has been insulated and I use the deep litter method and one red bulb for 12 ft by 16 ft space. The water rarely freezes in it. Temperature is usually around 33* or higher.

H@R Gadget and Mouse are cute names. I really like Gadget.
smile.png

I like the coupons at Walgreens. But it is hard for me to believe some of these people that buy $200 of groceries and end up paying $6. Wish I knew how to do that!!!

I havent heard from DrH this morning.

FT sorry about the loss of your silkie.
hugs.gif

BBP Just to clarify on color of the mixed birds, when they are cross breeds there is really no way of knowing what genetic combinations may appear. BBP I sent you a pm if you want me to take back the birds or what not.

Raiquee pepper venison sounds really good.
big_smile.png

Bigz glad you and Suzie had a perfect anniversary. The food sounds like it was extra yummy.

Hi Troll amd henferno..

Jim glad the birds like their new house spots. Have you reached the magic number yet? I did but am thinking I am going to change my number to a smaller number. Peacock seranading the sunset? What a nice picture I have in my minds eye.
