I live 2 miles from my parents, on the same road. We have a unique set-up so if they need me for anything, all they have to do is pick up the phone and dial #1 and it rings me. Mother has hard time remembering and though she doesn't have Alzheimers, she does have the little hints of it. Father is one who cannot hear all that much, his sense of common sense is just about gone and he has severe arthritis in his fingers (they are angled) so there is a great deal of things they cannot do like haul in firewood or cut down a tree and sometimes I'm called to hunt down my mothers glasses or some little thing she just cannot remember where it is. When they pass on, then their property, though not set up for hobby farming, will be put through that very task...I'd insert photos if I knew how to do it, but I'm no tech whiz
I'm not with a mate, so its just me taking care of them.
I just have my mom and she is in an assisted living place in La Crosse. I consider it more a ~strip your money from you place~ that does little for you. My sister and I are trying to figure out what her mental status is at the moment. Although my sister lives in Maine. She has lots of good ideas and then deligates to me. NOT But she tries. Awe well just part of the family dynamics thingy,. My mom has been having some issues lately so I have been travelling there to help out. My DS30 babysits the chickens and the dog. I dont know how long that will last. My mom also suffers from hearing loss~at least we finally convinced her to get a hearing aide. I feel I will be doing a lot more travelling to La Crosse from now on. Although it is ONLY 2 1/2 hr drive, the overnighters are more difficult to arrange around DS30s schedule..
Wish we(sis and me) could get her to move to Eau Claire area. There is a very nice place here and serves wonderful home made food daily. Thats a big plus as she eats institutional food now and complains constantly.
Sounds familiar, alot of us BabyBoomers are in the same boat which sometimes feels like a sinking ship !!! Unfortuneately I don't have aging parents to look over but I have a single Aunt that needs alot of attention these days. She never married or had children so she is all alone. My sister and Brother are down in Racine and tend to her needs, Sister 99%.
I have been taking care of her RX's thru the mail order and since I don't work I spend an awlfull lot of time on the phone with her. He most used words are "Did I tell ya "..................... Yes Auntie you did !!! x million !!
She will need to go into a nursing home in the near future. She is past the assisted living stage we are afraid. She is 89 yrs old and basically just eats, sleeps and tries to read the paper but has failing eye site and terrible hearing. Has $5000 hearing aids she paid for that never uses. Actually she can't find them. She has had ones that she takes out, wraps in a napkin and later finds them chewed up by the dog. This happened twice !!! You would think she would realize by then that the dog can smell threw the napkin !!! This was 8 or so years ago when she was more with it !!!
I often wonder how different my life would be if I had my parents with us today. Mom would be 80 and Dad would have been 83. Dad smoked like a chimeny !!
This is an expecially hard time of year for anyone that has lost a loved one and especially hard for our family. It will be 10 years on January 2nd that both of my parents were brutally murdered during a home invasion.
Thank god I have good memories of so many Christmas's to hold on to. The Christmas prior to their murder I didn't attend since I had had surgery and came home from the hospital on Christmas eve. Everyone said it wasn't the same without me their snapping pictures but they also felt something else. Hard to describe. Like we all felt this sense of doom.
Mom was experienceing heart problems and possibly more heart surgery but we will never know.
Sorry, didn't mean get so serious and be a downer but all these thoughts go thru my head especially now.
So everyone give your parents some hugs from me, ah what the heck hug everybody !!! And tell them you love them now and then !!!
Tiki and Tatter, bless you both for looking after your parents, sounds like they are all in good hands. And it can't be easy when you are single and have your plates full as it is !!
